Pope’s Head Alley ran south from Cornhill to Lombard Street, and was named for the Pope’s Head Tavern that stood at its northern end. Although it does not appear on the Agas Map, its approximate location can be surmised since all three streets still exist. Although Stow himself does not discuss Pope’s Head Alley directly, his book was Imprinted by Iohn Wolfe, Printer to the honorable Citie of London: And are to be ſold at his ſhop within the Popes head Alley in Lombard ſtreet. 1598 (Stow 1598). Booksellers proliferated Alley in the early years of the 17th century (Sugden 418).
