Middlesex (County)

roseList documents mentioning Middlesex (County)
Middlesex is a county in southeast England. Its name is derived from the Old English words for middle (middel) and Saxons (Seaxe). According to Bosworth, Middlesex grew out of the East Saxon kingdom, which was formed in a district that had been settled by a Celtic tribe known as the Trinobantes, or Trinovantes before the arrival of the Romans (Bosworth 4). In early modern London, the Bishopric of London had the same limmites as the area of the former East Saxon kingdom and contayned Essex, Middlesex, and a part of Hertfordshire (Stow 1598, sig. 2G6v).
