How to Use the Folger Digital Image Collection (LUNA)

This guide to using the Folger Digital Image Collection was one of several guides written for students by students working under the supervision of Dr. Kristen A. Bennett. These how to resources for conducting digital, archival, and worldwide library research across topics in early modern English literature were created by undergraduate students in the Spring 2014, ENG 304 class, Subversion and Scandal in Early Modern Print Culture with the help of the Faculty Initiatives in Technology grant at Stonehill College. Dr. Bennett and her students kindly gave MoEML permission to republish their guides. Click here for guides to Early English Books Online, the English Broadside Ballad Archive, Project Gutenberg, and the Internet Shakespeare Editions. To see the guides in their original context, along with other materials, visit the English 304 blog.

The Folger Shakespeare Library, founded in 1932 by Henry Folger and Emily Folger and located in Washington D.C., is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare materials. The library also contains various English and continental books from the renaissance and early modern period. In recent years, the Folger has undertaken a massive initiative to digitize many of its rare materials. The Folger Digital Image Collection (often refered to as LUNA) provides open-source, online access to over 70,000 images of books, theater memorabilia, manuscripts, art, and more.

How to Navigate LUNA

To access the Folger Digital Image Collection, either enter the URL http://luna.folger.edu/luna/servlet/FOLGERCM1~6~6 or click on LUNA under Research and Scholars on the Folger homepage. The folllowing instructions describe how to navigate the Folger Digital Image Collection, emphasizing sections and features that may be of interest to students.

1. Search

  • Choose search catalog data or catalog data & text in documents from the search bar on the top right-hand corner of the LUNA homepage.
  • You can also click on advanced search below the search bar to access more detailed search options.
  • Keyword search in LUNA works much like in a search engine, so you can use the AND, OR, NOT, and quotation marks to help refine your search. You can also use wildcard characters like * and ?. For example, enter Par* for results like Paris, Parigi, Paraguay, etc. Enter Rom? for search results like Rome and Roma.
  • If you do not find what you are looking for right away, try varying your spelling in your search (e.g., Much Adoe About Nothing versus Much Ado About Nothing).
  • Press search to see your search results. Multiple results will appear, including thumbnail images from different editions of books, paintings, photos of stage productions, and actual text of some of the books in the collection. Using the left-hand side column, you can filter results by material type (what), author or artist (who), place of publication (where), and year of publication (when).
