Cross Bones Graveyard

A graveyard for London prostitutes also called a single womans Churchyard by John Stow (Stow 1598, sig. Y6v). The Cross Bones served as a burial place for women deprived of a Christian burial because of their association with the brothels of Southwark. Cross Bones Graveyard was located just south of the area depicted on the Agas map. It is labelled St Saviours Burying Ground on Rocque and Pine’s 1746 map (A Plan of the Cities of London and Westminster, and Borough of Southwark with Contiguous Buildings).
