Church Lane (Tower Street Ward)

Church Lane was a semi-circular lane that wrapped around the south side of the parish church of St. Dunstan in the East, in Tower Street Ward. Both ends of Church Lane led south off Tower Street. Stow’s description characterizes them as two separate lanes with the same name: Then haue ye two lanes out of Tower streete, both called Churchlanes, because one runneth downe by the East ende of Saint Dunstans Church, and the other by the west ende of the same (Stow). The marginal note in the 1603 edition of A Survey distinguishes them as Church lane by East and Church lane in the west (Stow). Church Lane is not labelled on the Agas map. The western end bears the label S. Donat Hill (a corruption of St. Dunstan’s Hill).
The Map of Early Modern London assigns one shared identity (i.e., the same XML:id) to St. Dunstan’s Hill and Church Lane in the West. If the reference is to Church Lane in the East or could be either end of the lane, then we point the reference to Church Lane (this page). We have not yet added the coordinates for this location to the database.
