Stephens Lane

Now known as Churchyard Alley, Stephen’s Lane was most likely named for Stephen Lucas, stockfishmonger, who was a taxpayer in Bridge ward in 1332Gap in transcription. Reason: The text has been abridged or truncated by an editor for some reason.[…] and whose will was enrolled in 1349 (Ekwall 131). With regard to the toponomical history of the site, Eilert Ekwall notes that the former name, Chirchhaw Lane, stems from an old word for churchyard, found for instance in Chaucer (Ekwall 131). Stephen’s Lane ran north-to-south from Stockfishmonger Row, slightly to the east of the Fishmongers’ Hall.
