The Map of Early Modern London
                  The Agas Map
The Map of Early Modern London comprises four distinct, interoperable projects. MoEML
began in 1999 as a digital atlas of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century London based
on the 1560s Agas woodcut map of the city. MoEML now includes an encyclopedia of early
modern London people and places, a library of mayoral shows and other texts rich in
London toponyms, and a forthcoming versioned edition of John Stow’s A Survey of London.
The project consists of TEI-encoded files in an eXist database. The location files
use GIS tags to pin data to locations on the historical Agas map, which is delivered
using a system based on OpenLayers 3.

Thanks for helping us improve MoEML’s edition of the Agas Map! Please fill in as much
of the information below as you can. When you click send on this email, your information

                  1.	What type of change are you proposing? Common changes include
                  (a)	adding to the Placeography and to the Agas Map a location that MoEML has not yet
                  included in its Placeography;
                  (b)	mapping a location that is listed in the MoEML Placeography but has not yet been
                  mapped on the Agas Map;
                  (c)	moving a point, line, or shape on the Agas Map;
                  (d)	adjusting a shape to better capture the footprint of the location on the Agas
                  Map.

                  2.	AUTHORITY NAME: If you are recommending that we add a new location (a), what do
you recommend that we use as the authority name for the location? I.e., what name
do scholars use in secondary historical criticism? If there’s no criticism, what do
you think the authority name ought to be? Note that we generally take as our authority
name the name most commonly used by early modern Londoners in 1600. We modernize the
spelling according to standard editorial practice.

                  3.	XML:ID: If you are recommended that we map or correct the map placement for a location
already in the MoEML Placeography (b, c, or d), what is the XML:id of the location?
The XML:id is an alphanumeric string consisting normally of four uppercase letters
and a number. You’ll find this XML:ID in the URL of the location. For example, the
XML:id of St. Bride’s church is STBR1 and the URL for the location is https://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/STBR1.htm.
In most browsers, the URL will show up somewhere on your screen when you hover over
                  the name of the location.

                  4.	CERTAINTY: If you are recommending that we add map coordinates for an existing
or new MoEML location (a or b), please tell us how certain you are about the placement
of the location on the map. Options are: high, medium, or low.

                  5.	SOURCES: Please indicate the source(s) of your knowledge, especially if we should
be giving credit to the source(s).

                  6.	XML Code: Please draw the location on the Agas Map using the built-in drawing tools
and paste the code from the red box into this email. See the Add MoEML Locations to
the Agas Map page for instructions on how to draw on the map.

                  7.	MORE INFORMATION: Please provide any necessary information or comments to help
us assess and implement your suggestion.

                  8.	CREDIT: Would you like to be credited for your contribution to the map? If yes,
please give your name and a brief bio-bibliographical note.

                  9.	FOLLOW-UP: May the Project Director follow up with you? Please give your email
address if you would like follow-up at an email address other than the one from which
                  you are sending this message?

We have determined that the source considered January 1 as the beginning of the new
                  year.
We cannot determine whether the source considers January 1 or March 25 as the beginning
                  of the new year.
Therefore, there are two possible Gregorian equivalents for this date.
This is an Anno Mundi date. As there is no widely accepted Anno Mundi calendar, we
are unable to provide a Gregorian equivalent.

This location has been added to the MoEML gazetteer on the authority of Carlin and
Belcher’s gazetteer of London placenames in 1520. We have added coordinates to the
Agas map on the basis of the accompanying Map of Tudor London (a scholarly cartographic
                  reconstruction).
This empty location document was added in order to align our gazetteer with REED London
Online (RLO). We have adopted RLO’s authority name, location type, and modern map
                  coordinates.
