Court of Aldermen
The Court of Aldermen was composed of
senior officials known as
aldermen, who were each elected to represent one ward in the City of London. The lord mayor oversaw the Court of Aldermen and was himself an alderman. Historically, the Court of Aldermen was the primary administrative body for the Corporation of London; however, by the early modern period, many of its responsibilities had been transferred to the Court of Common Council. The Court of Aldermen exists today in a somewhat modified form. (TL)
