            <p>This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> copy (<idno type="call">DA680 S87 1633</idno>) of
               <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in
               <ref target="http://contentdm.library.uvic.ca/cdm/compoundobject/collection/collection25/id/993">UVic ContentDM</ref> (Collection 25, <idno>993</idno>).
               For convenience, and only because <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription
               of the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> <idno type="STC">STC 23345.5</idno>/<idno type="Wing">Wing S5773A</idno>
               (<idno type="TCP">TCP A13053</idno>), available on <ref target="https://github.com/textcreationpartnership/A13053">GitHub</ref>). The names of the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers are unknown. <name ref="PERS1.xml#SCHA2">Paul Schaffner</name> edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before <date notAfter="2012">2012</date>.
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#RAHT1">Sebastian Rahtz</name> created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name>
               downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. <name ref="PERS1.xml#TAKE1">Joey Takeda</name> and <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name> processed the file programmatically
               to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on
               predictable patterns. <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#TEAM1">MoEML Research Assistants</name> at the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> performed the
               following additional tasks: transcribed the <date when-custom="1633" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1633</date> text from the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy
               in those places where the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic
               catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#JENS1">Janelle Jenstad</name>.</p>

<lb/>or by fauour of ſome particular perſons, as
<lb/>of Doctors, which were accounted notable
<lb/>and renowned, for knowledge in Philoſophie.
<lb/>And there were other inferior Schools alſo.</p>
      <p>Vpon Feſtivall dayes,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Solemne meetings and diſpu<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ting of ſcholars Logically and de<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>monſtra<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tively.</label> the Maſters made
<lb/>ſolemne meetings in the Churches, where
<lb/>their Schollers diſputed Logically and de<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>monſtratively: ſome bringing Enthimems,
<lb/>other, perfect Syllogiſmes: some diſputed
<lb/>for ſhew; others to trace out the truth; and
<lb/>cunning Sophiſters were brave ſcholars,
<lb/>when they flowed with words. Others uſed
<lb/>fallacies: Rhetoricians ſpake aptly to per<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>swade, observing the precepts of Art, and
<lb/>omitting nothing that might ſerve their pur<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>poſe. The Boyes of divers Schooles did cap
<lb/>or pot verſes, and contended of the princi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ples of Grammar.</p>
      <p>There were ſome,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Grammar ſchooles &amp; ſcholers their exer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ciſes.</label> which (on the other
<lb/>ſide) with Epigrams and Rimes, nipping
<lb/>and quipping their fellowes, and the faults
<lb/>of others, though ſuppreſſing their names,
<lb/>moved thereby much laughter among their
<lb/>Auditors.</p>
                  <p>Hitherto <name ref="PERS1.xml#FITZ1"><hi>Fitzſtephen</hi></name>, for ſchooles and
<lb/>ſcholars, and for their exerciſe in the
<lb/>Citie in his dayes,: ſithence the which
<lb/>time, as to me it ſeemeth, by increaſe of
<lb/>Colledges of ſtudents in the Vniverſi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ties of <hi>Oxford</hi> and <hi>Cambridge</hi>, the fre<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>quenting of ſchooles, and exerciſes of
<lb/>ſcholars in the Citie, as had beene ac<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cuſtomed, very much decreaſed.</p>
                  <p>The three principall Churches which
<lb/>had theſe famous ſchooles by priviled<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ges, muſt needs be the <ref target="STPA2.xml">cathedral Church
                     <lb/>of S. <hi>Paul</hi></ref> for one: ſeeing that by a gene<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rall Councell,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_rmlabel" place="margin-right">
                        <name ref="PERS1.xml#PARI3"><hi>Mat. Paris</hi></name>. Every Ca<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>thedrall Church had his ſchoole for poore ſcholars.</label>

<lb/>at <hi>Rome</hi>, in the Patriarchie of</hi> Laterane,
<lb/><hi>it was decreed, that every Cathedrall
<lb/>Church ſhould have his ſchoolemaſter,
<lb/>to teach poore ſchollers, and others, as
<lb/>had bin accuſtomed, and that no man
<lb/>ſhould take any reward for licence to
<lb/>teach. The ſecond, as moſt ancient, may
<lb/>ſeeme to have beene the</hi> <ref target="WEST1.xml"><hi>Monaſterie of

<lb/>met the Queene, ſhe would oppoſe me tou<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ching my learning and leſſon. And falling
<lb/>from Grammar to Logicke, wherein ſhe had
<lb/>some knowledge, ſhe would ſubtilly conclude
<lb/>an Argument with me. And by her hand<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>maiden give me three or foure peeces of mo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ney, and ſend mee unto the Palace, where I
<lb/>ſhould receive ſome victuals, and then bee
<lb/>diſmiſſed.</p>
                  <p>The third Schoole ſeemeth to have
<lb/>beene in the <ref target="STSA1.xml">Monaſtery of S. <hi>Saviour</hi>, at
<lb/><hi>Bermondſey</hi> in <hi>Southwarke</hi></ref>. For other
<lb/>Priories, as of <ref target="STJO3.xml">Saint <hi>Iohn</hi></ref> by <ref target="SMIT1.xml"><hi>Smithfield</hi></ref>,
<lb/><ref target="STBA5.xml">Saint <hi>Bartholomew</hi></ref> in <ref target="SMIT1.xml"><hi>Smithfield</hi></ref>, <ref target="STSA1.xml">Saint
<lb/><hi>Mary Overie</hi> in <hi>Southwarke</hi></ref>, and that of
<lb/>the <ref target="HOLY1.xml">Holy <hi>Trinity</hi></ref> by <ref target="ALDG1.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi></ref>, were all
<lb/>of later foundation, and the Friers Col<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ledges, and Hoſpitals in this Citie, were
<lb/>raiſed ſince them, in the <date datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_HENR7">reignes of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7"><hi>Hen<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ry</hi> the 3</name></date>. <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_EDWA1"><name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA1"><hi>Edward</hi> the 1</name></date>, <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_EDWA5"><name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA5">2</name></date>, and <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_EDWA3"><name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA3">3</name></date>. &amp;c. All
<lb/>which houſes had their Schools, though
<lb/>not ſo famous as theſe firſt named.</p>
                  <p>But touching Schooles more lately
<lb/>advanced in this Citie, I read, that <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR8">King
<lb/><hi>Henry</hi> the fifth</name>, having ſuppreſſed the
                     <lb/>Priories Aliens,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Priories Aliens.</label> whereof ſome were a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bout <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, namely, <ref target="STMA11.xml"><hi>Our Lady of Roun<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>civall</hi></ref> by <ref target="CHAR1.xml"><hi>Charing-Croſſe</hi></ref>: one other Ho<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſpitall in <ref target="HOLB1.xml"><hi>Oldborne</hi></ref>: one other without
<lb/><ref target="CRIP1.xml"><hi>Creplegate</hi></ref>; and the fourth without <ref target="ALDE3.xml"><hi>Al<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>derſgate</hi></ref>: beſides other that are now
<lb/>worne out of memory, and whereof
<lb/>there is no monument remaining, more

<lb/><hi>Pauls</hi></ref>, at <ref target="STMA24.xml">S. <hi>Martins le grand</hi></ref>, <ref target="STMA47.xml">S. <hi>Mary le
<lb/>Bow</hi></ref>, in <ref target="CHEA1.xml"><hi>Cheap</hi></ref>, <ref target="STDU3.xml">S. <hi>Dunſtans</hi> in the weſt</ref>,
<lb/>and <ref target="STAN10.xml">S. <hi>Anthonies</hi></ref>. And in the next yeere,
                     <lb/>to wit, <date when-custom="1394" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1394</date>.<note type="editorial" resp="PERS1.xml#MILL2"><name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name>’s two dating methods do not correspond here. <lb/><ref target="STPE3.xml">Saint <hi>Peters</hi> upon <hi>Cornhill</hi></ref>, and in
<lb/>the <ref target="MERC1.xml">Hoſpitall of Saint <hi>Thomas</hi> of <hi>Acons</hi></ref>
<lb/>in <ref target="CHEA5.xml">weſt <hi>Cheape</hi></ref>. Since the which time,
<lb/>as divers Schooles, by ſuppreſſing of
<lb/>religious houſes (whereof they were
<lb/>members in the <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_HENR1">reigne of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR1"><hi>Henry</hi> the
<lb/>eighth</name></date>, have beene decayed: ſo againe
<lb/>have ſome others beene newly erected

                        <ref target="STPA4.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi> Schoole</ref> new buil<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ded.</label> As namely, <ref target="STPA4.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi>
<lb/>ſchoole</ref>, in place of an old ruined houſe,
<lb/>was builded in moſt ample manner, and
<lb/>largely endowed in the yeere <date when-custom="1512" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1512</date>. by
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#COLE12"><hi>Iohn Collet</hi></name>, Doctor of Divinity, and
<lb/>Deane of <ref target="STPA4.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi></ref>, for 153. poore mens
<lb/>children: for which there was ordained
<lb/>a Maſter, Submaſter or Vſher, and a
                     <lb/>Chaplaine.<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Free ſchools in <ref target="CHRI2.xml"><hi>Chriſts Ho<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſpitall</hi></ref>.
                     </label> Againe, in the yeere <date when-custom="1553" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1553</date>.
<lb/>after the erection of <ref target="CHRI2.xml">Chriſts Hoſpitall</ref>,
<lb/>in the late diſſolved houſe of the <ref target="GREY2.xml"><hi>Gray
<lb/>Friers</hi></ref>, a great number of poore children
<lb/>being taken in, a ſchoole was alſo ordai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ned there, at the Citizens charges.</p>
                  <p>Alſo in the yeere <date when-custom="1561" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1561</date>. the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#META1">Mer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chant Taylors</name> of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Free ſchooles founded by the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#META1">Merchant Taylors</name>.</label> founded one
<lb/>notable free Grammar-ſchoole, in the
<lb/><ref target="STLA106.xml">Pariſh of Saint <hi>Laurence Poultney</hi></ref>, by
<lb/><ref target="CAND1.xml"><hi>Candle-weeke</hi> ſtreet</ref>; <name ref="PERS1.xml#HILL4"><hi>Richard Hils</hi></name>, late
<lb/>Maſter of that Company, having given
<lb/>500. pound toward the purchaſe of an
<lb/>Houſe, called the <ref target="ROSE1.xml">Mannor of the <hi>Roſe</hi></ref>,
<lb/>ſometime the Duke of <hi>Buckinghams</hi>,
<lb/>wherein the ſchoole is kept.</p>
                  <p>As for the meeting of Schoolemaſters
<lb/>on feſtivall dayes, at feſtivall Churches,
<lb/>and the diſputing of their ſchollers Lo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gically, &amp;c. whereof I have before ſpo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ken, the ſame was long ſince diſconti<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>nued. But the arguing of ſchoole-boies
<lb/>about the principles of Grammar, hath
<lb/>beene continued even till our time: for
<lb/>I my ſelfe (in my youth) have yeerely
<lb/>ſeene, on the Eve of Saint <hi>Bartholomew</hi>
<lb/>the Apoſtle,<note type="editorial" resp="PERS1.xml#SIMP5">Celebrated on 23 August.</note> the ſchollers of divers
                     <lb/>Grammar-ſchooles,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Scholars diſputed in <ref target="STBA5.xml">S. <hi>Bar<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tholomews</hi> Church<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>yard</ref>.</label> repaire unto the
<lb/><ref target="STBA5.xml">Churchyard of Saint <hi>Bartholomew</hi></ref> the
<lb/>Priory in <ref target="SMIT1.xml"><hi>Smithfield</hi></ref>, where, upon a banke
<lb/>boorded about under a Tree, ſome one
<lb/>ſcholar hath ſtepped up, and there hath
<lb/>appoſed and anſwered, till he were by
<lb/>some better ſcholler overcome and
<lb/>put downe. And then the overcommer
<lb/>taking the place, did like as the firſt:
<lb/>and in the end, the beſt oppoſers and
<lb/>anſwerers had rewards, which I obſer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ved not: but it made both good ſchoole<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>maſters, and alſo good ſcholars (dili<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gently againſt ſuch times) to prepare
<lb/>themſelves for the obtaining of this
<lb/>Garland.</p>
                  <p>I remember there repaired to theſe ex<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>erciſes, (amongſt others) the Maſters
<lb/>and ſcholars of the free ſchooles of <ref target="STPA2.xml">S.
<lb/><hi>Pauls</hi></ref> in <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, of <ref target="WEST1.xml">Saint <hi>Peters</hi> at</ref>

<lb/>for a yeere or twaine, in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA4" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">reigne of
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA4"><hi>Edward</hi> the ſixth</name></date>, revived in the Cloiſter

<lb/><hi>Martin Bowes</hi></name>, Goldſmith.</p>
                  <p>Nevertheleſſe, howſoever the incou<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ragement failed, the Scholers of <ref target="STPA2.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi></ref>,
<lb/>meeting with them of <ref target="STAN10.xml">Saint <hi>Anthonies</hi></ref>,
                     <lb/>would call them <ref target="STAN10.xml">Saint <hi>Anthonies</hi></ref> Pigs,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <ref target="STAN10.xml"><hi>Anthonies</hi></ref> Pigs.</label>
<lb/>and they againe would call the other
<lb/>Pigeons of <ref target="STPA2.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi></ref>;
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Pigeons of <ref target="STPA2.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi></ref>.
                     </label> becauſe many Pige<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ons were bred in <ref target="STPA2.xml"><hi>Pauls</hi> Church</ref>, and <ref target="STAN10.xml">S.
<lb/><hi>Anthonie</hi></ref> was alwaies figured with a
<lb/>Pig following him: and mindfull of the
<lb/>former uſage, did for a long ſeaſon, diſ<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>orderly in the open ſtreet, provoke one
<lb/>another, with <hi>Salve tu quoque, placet tibi
<lb/>mecum diſputare? placet</hi>. And ſo procee<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ding from this to queſtions in Gram<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>mar, they uſually fell from words to
<lb/>blowes, with their ſatchels full of books,
<lb/>many times in great heaps, that they
<lb/>troubled the ſtreets and paſſengers: ſo
<lb/>that finally they were reſtrained with
<lb/>the decay of <ref target="STAN10.xml">Saint <hi>Anthonies</hi> Schoole</ref>.</p>
                  <p>Out of this Schoole have ſprung di<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>vers famous perſons, whereof although
<lb/>time hath buried the names of many,
<lb/>yet in mine owne remembrance may be

                     <lb/>Colledge of Phyſicians in <ref target="KNIG1.xml"><hi>Knight-riders<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſtreet</hi></ref>,
to beginne in the yeere <date when-custom="1584-05-06" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1584. on
<lb/>the ſixth of <hi>May</hi></date>, and ſo to be continued
<lb/>for ever twice a week, on Wedneſdſy &amp;
<lb/>Friday, by the honourable Baron, <name ref="PERS1.xml#LUML3"><hi>Iohn</hi>,

      <p>Furthermore,<label rendition="#stow_1633_schools_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Mathema<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ticall Le<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cture read.</label> about the ſame time,
<lb/>there was alſo begun a Mathematicall
<lb/>Lecture, to be read in a faire old Chap<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pell, builded by <name ref="PERS1.xml#EYRE1"><hi>Simon Eayre</hi></name>, within the
<lb/><ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>; whereof a learned Citizen

<lb/>are to finde foure, to reade Lectures of
<lb/>Divinity, Aſtronomy, Muſicke and Ge<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ometry, within his dwelling houſe in
