This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the University of Victoria copy (DA680 S87 1598) of STC 23341 (ESTC S117887) as its control text. For convenience, we began with the TEI-XML P4 file of the EEBO-TCP transcription of STC 23341(TCP A13049), available on GitHub). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. Paul Schaffner edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before 2012. Sebastian Rahtz created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. Martin Holmes downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. Martin Holmes processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. Holmes added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable patterns. MoEML Research Assistants at the University of Victoria performed the following additional tasks: supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the UVic copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. Bridge Within Ward is west of Billingsgate Ward. The ward is named after London Bridge.

(BRID3.xml) London Bridge

As the only bridge in London crossing the Thames until 1729, London Bridge was a focal point of the city. After its conversion from wood to stone, completed in 1209, the bridge housed a variety of structures, including a chapel and a growing number of shops. The bridge was famous for the cityʼs grisly practice of displaying traitorsʼ heads on poles above its gatehouses. Despite burning down multiple times, London Bridge was one of the few structures not entirely destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666.

New Fish Street (also known in the seventeenth century as Bridge Street) ran north-south from London Bridge at the south to the intersection of Eastcheap, Gracechurch Street, and Little Eastcheap in the north (Harben 432; BHO). At the time, it was the main thoroughfare to London Bridge (Sugden 191). It ran on the boundary between Bridge Within Ward on the west and Billingsgate Ward on the east. It is labelled on the Agas map as New Fyſhe ſtreate. Variant spellings include Street of London Bridge, Brigestret, Brugestret, and Newfishstrete (Harben 432; BHO).

Old Fish Street Hill ran north-south between Old Fish Street and Thames Street. Stow refers to this street both as old Fishstreete hill and Saint Mary Mounthaunt Lane.

Gracechurch Street ran north-south from Cornhill Street near Leadenhall Market to the bridge. At the southern end, it was called New Fish Street. North of Cornhill, Gracechurch continued as Bishopsgate Street, leading through Bishop’s Gate out of the walled city into the suburb of Shoreditch.

The church of St. Magnus the Martyr, believed to be founded some time in the eleventh century, was on the south side of Thames Street just north of London Bridge. According to Stow, in its churchyard haue béene buried many men of good worſhip, whoſe monumentes are now for the moſt part vtterly defaced, including John Michell, mayor of London in the first part of the fifteenth century (Stow 1598, sig. M4r). The church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren (Wikipedia).

Pudding Lane is most famously known as the starting point of the Great Fire of 1666. Pudding Lane ran south from Little Eastcheap down to Thames Street, with New Fish Street (Newfyshe Streat) framing it on the west and Botolph Lane on the east. The only intersecting street on Pudding Lane is St. George’s Lane, and the nearby parishes include St. Margaret (New Fish Street), St. Magnus, St. Botolph (Billingsgate), St. George (Botolph Lane), and St. Leonard (Eastcheap). On Ekwall’s map it is labeled as Rother (Pudding) Lane after Stow’s account of the lane’s former title. Pudding Lane is contained within Billingsgate Ward.

Eastcheap Street ran east-west, from Tower Street to St. Martin’s Lane. West of New Fish Street/Gracechurch Street, Eastcheap was known as Great Eastcheap. The portion of the street to the east of New Fish Street/Gracechurch Street was known as Little Eastcheap. Eastcheap (Eschepe or Excheapp) was the site of a medieval food market.

St. John’s of Jerusalem provided housing and care for pilgrims and crusading knights. It was held by the Knights Hospitallers and dissolved in the reign of Henry VIII (Stow 1598, sig. 2D7r).

Thames Street was the longest street in early modern London, running east-west from the ditch around the Tower of London in the east to St. Andrew’s Hill and Puddle Wharf in the west, almost the complete span of the city within the walls.

In early modern London, Fish Wharf was an incredibly active area of commercial industry on the north bank of the River Thames in Bridge Ward Within. John Stow indicates that the wharf was On that south side of Thames stréete in the parish of S. Magnus (Stow 1598, sig. M5r). Additionally according to Henry Harben’s A Dictionary of London, the location of wharf was specifically selected to be adjacent, on the west, to the present London Bridge Wharf, and between that wharf and Fresh Wharf east (Harben).

St Martin’s Lane (Bridge Within Ward) ran north-south from the boundary between Candlewick Street and Eastcheap to Thames Street and was located at the western edge of Bridge Within Ward at its boundary with Candlewick Street Ward. The street takes its name from St. Martin Orgar, located on its eastern side. It is labelled "S. Martines la." on the Agas map.

Lombard Street was known by early modern Londoners as a place of commerce and trade. Running east to west from Gracechurch Street to Poultry, Lombard Street bordered Langbourn Ward, Walbrook Ward, Bridge Within Ward, and Candlewick Street Ward.

The Julian calendar, in use in the British Empire until September 1752. This calendar is used for dates where the date of the beginning of the year is ambigious.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year regularized to beginning on 1 January.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year beginning on 25 March. This was the calendar used in the British Empire until September 1752.

The Gregorian calendar, used in the British Empire from September 1752. Sometimes referred to as New Style (NS). Years run from January 1 through December 31.

The Anno Mundi (year of the world) calendar is based on the supposed date of the creation of the world, which is calculated from Biblical sources. At least two different creation dates are in common use. See Anno Mundi (Wikipedia).

Regnal dates are given as the number of years into the reign of a particular monarch. Our practice is to tag such dates with @calendar="regnal", and provide an equivalent date using a more systematic calendar (usually Julian) in a custom dating attribute.

Most MoEML documents, or significant fragments with @xml:id attributes, can be addressed using the mol: prefix and accessed through the web application with their id + .xml.

The molagas prefix points to the shape representation of a location on MoEML’s OpenLayers3-based rendering of the Agas Map.

The mdt (MoEML Document Type) prefix used on <catRef>/@target points to a central taxonomy in the includes file.

The mdtlist (MoEML Document Type listing) prefix used in linking attributes points to a listings page constructed from a category in the central MDT taxonomy in the includes file. There are two variants, one with the plain @xml:id of the category, meaning all documents in the specified category, and one with the suffix _subcategories, meaning all subcategories of the category.

The molgls (MoEML gloss) prefix used on <term>/@corresp points to a a glossary entry in the GLOSS1.xml file.

This molvariant prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during automated generation of gazetteer index files. It points to an element in the generated variant spellings listing file which lists all documents which contain a particular spelling variant for a location.

This molajax prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during the static build process, to specify links which point to MoEML resources which should not be loaded into the source page during standalone processing; instead, these should be turned into links to the XML source documents, and at HTML page load time, these should be turned into AJAX calls. This is to handle the scenario in which a page such as an A-Z index of the whole site would end up containing virtually the whole site inside itself.

The molstow prefix is used on @facs attributes to link to the HCMC verison of the Stow facsimiles. Usually the first group is the year (1633) and then last is the image number (0001).

 A common abbreviated form of the appears over a hundred times in the text. This takes the form of a small latin letter y with a superscript small latin letter e above it. The Medieval Unicode Font Initiative includes this in its character recommendation 3.0, assigning it to Private Use Area codepoint U+E781, but it can be composed from a regular latin small letter y and a combining e above (codepoint U+0364). In the original TCP encoding, this was encoded as y<SUP>e</SUP> in some cases, and y<SUP>•</SUP> in others. Examination of the page-images suggests that the only difference between them is one of print clarity; the second variant is clearly not a dot above, but closer to a stroke, and the stroke could well be part of a small e. In other cases, there is no apparent difference between instances encoded with e and others encoded with a dot. This variance was apparently meaningless, and perhaps at the whim of the encoder, or the result of work by two different encoders with different approaches, so it has not been retained in this encoding.

Author A person or organization chiefly responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of a work, usually printed text. This term may also be used when more than one person or body bears such responsibility. MoEML uses the term author to designate a contributor who is wholly or partly responsible for the original content of either a born-digital document, such as an encyclopedia entry, or a primary source document, such as a MoEML Library text. Data manager A person or organization responsible for managing databases or other data sources. MoEML uses the term data manager to designate contributors who maintain and manage our databases. They add and update the data sent to us by external contributors or found by MoEML team members. They also monitor journals and sources regularly to ensure that our databases are current. Editor A person or organization who prepares for publication a work not primarily their own, such as by elucidating text, adding introductory or other critical matter, or technically directing an editorial staff. MoEML uses the term editor to designate a person who creates a modern edition of a work based on one of our encoded diplomatic transcriptions of a primary source. We use the term commentator to designate a person who adds editorial or explanatory notes to one of our diplomatic transcriptions. Markup editor A person or organization performing the coding of SGML, HTML, or XML markup of metadata, text, etc. MoEML uses the code mrk both for the primary encoder(s) and for the person who edits the encoding. MoEML’s normal workflow includes a step whereby encoders check each other’s work. We use the term encoder to designate the principal encoder, and markup editor to designate the person who checks the encoding. Project director A person or organization with primary responsibility for all essential aspects of a project, or that manages a very large project that demands senior level responsibility, or that has overall responsibility for managing projects, or provides overall direction to a project manager. MoEML’s Project Director directs the intellectual and scholarly aspects of the project, consults with the Advisory and Editorial Boards, and ensures the ongoing funding of the project. Proofreader A person who corrects printed matter. MoEML uses the term proofreader to designate a contributor who checks a transcription against an original document, or a person who corrects formatting and typographical errors in a born-digital article. Note that we use the term markup editor to designate a person who proofreads and corrects encoding. Programmer A person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. MoEML uses the term programmer to designate a person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. Printer A person or organization who prints texts, whether from type or plates. MoEML uses the term printer to designate the person named as the printer on the title page of a primary source text, or the person identified by scholars as the printer (e.g., in the English Short Title Catalogue database). In early modern printing practice, the roles of printer, bookseller, and publisher might coincide in one person, or be performed by different people. Research team head A person who directed or managed a research project. MoEML uses the terms research term head and assistant project manager interchangeably. Transcriber A person who prepares a handwritten or typewritten copy from original material, including from dictated or orally recorded material. MoEML uses the term transcriber to designate the person or organization that transcribes a primary source. In the case of EEBO-TCP transcribers, we do not know the names of the transcribers. Acceptable names for this role are transcriber, first transcriber (often the EEBO-TCP transcriber), or MoEML transcriber. Toponymist MoEML uses the term toponymist to designate the person who identifies the place references in a text and points them to the right place in our locations database. The toponymist does not necessarily encode the toponyms. In most cases, the author of a born-digital article or the editor of a primary-source document will also be the toponymist. CSS editor MoEML uses the term CSS Editor for a person who adds CSS styling to the transcription of a primary source. BRidgewarde within, ſo called of London Bridge, which Bridge is a principall parte, of that warde, and beginneth at the ſtulpes on the ſouthende by Southwarke, runneth along the bridge, and North vp Bridgeſtreete, commonly called (of the Fiſhmarket) New Fiſhſtreete, from Fiſhſtreete hil, vp Graſſeſtreete, to the North corner of Graſſe Church, all the bridge is repleniſhed on both the ſides with large, fayre and beautifull buildings, inhabitants for the moſt part, rich Marchantes, and other wealthie Citizens, Mercers and Haberdaſhers.

In new fiſhſtreete be Fiſhmongers, and fayre Tauerns: on Fiſhſtreete hill, and Graſſeſtreete, men of diuers Trades, Grocers and Habardaſhers.

In Graſſeſtreete haue yee one fayre Conduite of ſweete water, caſtellated with Creſt and Uente, made there by the appointment of Thomas Hill Maior in the yeare 1484. who gaue by his Teſtament, one hundred markes towardes the conuayance of water to this place. It was begunne by his Executors, in the yeare, 1491. and finiſhed of his goodes whatſoeuer it coſt.

On the eaſt ſide of this Bridge warde, haue yee the fayre Parriſh Church of S. Magnus, in the which church haue béene buried many men of good worſhip, whoſe monumentes are now for the moſt part vtterly defaced. Then is the parriſh Church of S. Margaret on Fiſhſtreete hill, a proper Church, but monumentes it hath none: a foote way paſſeth by the South ſide of this Church, from Fiſhſtreete hil into Rotherlane. Up higher on this hil is the pariſh Church of S. Leonard, Milke church ſo termed of one VVilliam Melker, an eſpeciall builder thereof, but commonly called S. Leonardes in Eaſt Cheape, becauſe it ſtandeth at Eaſt Cheape corner. Monumentes there bee of the Doggetes, namelie, VValter Dogget Uintner, one of the Sheriffes, 1380. Iohn Dogget Uintner, and Allice his wife, about 1456. this Iohn Dogget gaue lands to that Church, VVilliam Dogget, &c.

This Church, and from thence into little Eaſt cheape to the eaſt ende of the ſaide Church, is of the Bridge warde.

Then higher in Graſſeſtreete is the pariſh Church of Saint Bennet, called Graſſe Church, of the Herbe market there kept: this Church alſo is of the Bridge warde, and the fartheſt North end thereof: ſome monumentes remaine there vndefaced, as of Iohn Harding Salter, 1576. Iohn Sturgeon, Chamberlaine of London, &c. The cuſtomes of Graſſe church market, in the raigne of Edwarde the third, as I haue reade in a booke of Cuſtomes were theſe: euery Forren cart laden with corne, or mault comming thether to be ſolde, was to pay one halfe pennie, euery Forren cart bringing cheeſe two pence euerie cart of corn & cheeſe together, (if the cheeſe be more worth then the corn) two pence, and if the corne bee more worth then the cheeſe, it was to pay a halfepennie, of two horſes laden with corne or maulte, the Bayliffe had one farthing, the cart of the Franchiſe of the Temple and of S. Martins le grand, payed a Farthing: the cart of the Hoſpitall of S. Iohn of Ieruſalem, paide nothing for their proper goodes, and if the corne were brought by Marchants of ſel againe, the loade paid a halfepennie, &c.

On the weſt ſide of this ward, at the north end of London bridge is a part of Thames ſtreete, which is alſo of this warde, to wit ſo much as of old time was called Stocke Fiſhmonger Row, of the Stocke Bridge warde within. 169 ſtockfiſhmongers dwelling there, downe weſt to a water gate, of old time called Ebgate, ſince Ebgatelane, & now yͤ old ſwan, which is a common ſtayre on yͤ Thames, but the paſſage is very narrow by meanes of incrochments. On this ſouth ſide of Thames ſtréet about the midway betwixt the bridge foote, and Ebgate lane, ſtandeth the Fiſhmongers hall, and diuers other fayre houſes for marchants. Theſe Fiſhmongers were ſometime of two ſeuerall companies, to wit, Stocke-fiſhmongers, and ſalt fiſhmongers, and were vnited in the yeare 1536. in the 28. of Henry the eight, their Hall to be but one, in the houſe giuen vnto them by the Lord Fanhope, in the pariſh of S. Michael Crooked lane, whereas before they had ſeueral halles, in Thames ſtréet twaine, in new fiſhſtréet twain, & in old fiſh ſtréet twain, in all ſix ſeueral halles. This company was ſo great as I have read in the recordes of the Tower: now worne out of knowledge to the company, who bee not able ſo much as to ſhewe the reaſon, why they were ioyned in fellowſhippe with the Goldſmithes, and doe giue their armes, &c. On that ſouth ſide of Thames ſtréete, haue ye Drinkwater wharfe, and Fiſh Wharfe in the pariſh of S. Magnus. On the North ſide of Thames ſtreet is S. Martins lane, a parte of which lane is alſo of this ward, to wit, on the one ſide to a well of water, and on the other ſide as farre vp as againſt the ſaid well. Then is S.  Kate LeBere Kate LeBere KL

Project Manager, 2020-2021. Assistant Project Manager, 2019-2020. Research Assistant, 2018-2020. Kate LeBere completed her BA (Hons.) in History and English at the University of Victoria in 2020. She published papers in The Corvette (2018), The Albatross (2019), and PLVS VLTRA (2020) and presented at the English Undergraduate Conference (2019), Qualicum History Conference (2020), and the Digital Humanities Summer Institute’s Project Management in the Humanities Conference (2021). While her primary research focus was sixteenth and seventeenth century England, she completed her honours thesis on Soviet ballet during the Russian Cultural Revolution. During her time at MoEML, Kate made significant contributions to the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey of London, old-spelling anthology of mayoral shows, and old-spelling library texts. She authored the MoEML’s first Project Management Manual and "quickstart" guidelines for new employees and helped standardize the Personography and Bibliography. She is currently a student at the University of British Columbia’s iSchool, working on her masters in library and information science.

 Tracey El Hajj Tracey El Hajj TEH

Junior Programmer 2018-2020. Research Associate 2020-2021. Tracey received her PhD from the Department of English at the University of Victoria in the field of Science and Technology Studies. Her research focuses on the algorhythmics of networked communications. She was a 2019-20 President’s Fellow in Research-Enriched Teaching at UVic, where she taught an advanced course on Artificial Intelligence and Everyday Life. Tracey was also a member of the Linked Early Modern Drama Online team, between 2019 and 2021. Between 2020 and 2021, she was a fellow in residence at the Praxis Studio for Comparative Media Studies, where she investigated the relationships between artificial intelligence, creativity, health, and justice. As of July 2021, Tracey has moved into the alt-ac world for a term position, while also teaching in the English Department at the University of Victoria.

Joey Takeda was a graduate student at the University of British Columbia in the Department of English (Science and Technology research stream). He completed his BA honours in English (with a minor in Women’s Studies) at the University of Victoria in 2016. His primary research interests included diasporic and indigenous Canadian and American literature, critical theory, cultural studies, and the digital humanities.

Project Manager, 2015-2019. Katie Tanigawa was a doctoral candidate at the University of Victoria. Her dissertation focused on representations of poverty in Irish modernist literature. Her additional research interests included geospatial analyses of modernist texts and digital humanities approaches to teaching and analyzing literature.

A lesser known fact about Meredith: back at home, she had her own kiln in her basement!

 Nathan Phillips Nathan Phillips NAP

Research Assistant, 2012-2014. Nathan Phillips completed his MA at the University of Victoria specializing in medieval and early modern studies in April 2014. His research focused on seventeenth-century non-dramatic literature, intellectual history, and the intersection of religion and politics. Additionally, Nathan was interested in textual studies, early-Tudor drama, and the editorial questions one can ask of all sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts in the twisted mire of 400 years of editorial practice. Nathan is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of English at Brown University.

Sarah Milligan completed her MA at the University of Victoria in 2012 on the invalid persona in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese. She has also worked with the <ref target="http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/">Internet Shakespeare Editions</ref> and with Dr. Alison Chapman on the Victorian Poetry Network, compiling an index of Victorian periodical poetry.

 Kim McLean-Fiander Kim McLean-Fiander KMF

Director of Pedagogy and Outreach, 2015–2020. Associate Project Director, 2015. Assistant Project Director, 2013-2014. MoEML Research Fellow, 2013. Kim McLean-Fiander comes to The Map of Early Modern London from the Cultures of Knowledge digital humanities project at the University of Oxford, where she was the editor of Early Modern Letters Online, an open-access union catalogue and editorial interface for correspondence from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. She is currently Co-Director of a sister project to EMLO called Women’s Early Modern Letters Online (WEMLO). In the past, she held an internship with the curator of manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library, completed a doctorate at Oxford on paratext and early modern women writers, and worked a number of years for the Bodleian Libraries and as a freelance editor. She has a passion for rare books and manuscripts as social and material artifacts, and is interested in the development of digital resources that will improve access to these materials while ensuring their ongoing preservation and conservation. An avid traveler, Kim has always loved both London and maps, and so is particularly delighted to be able to bring her early modern scholarly expertise to bear on the MoEML project.

Janelle Jenstad is Associate Professor of English at the University of Victoria, Director of The Map of Early Modern London, and PI of Linked Early Modern Drama Online. She has taught at Queen’s University, the Summer Academy at the Stratford Festival, the University of Windsor, and the University of Victoria. With Jennifer Roberts-Smith and Mark Kaethler, she co-edited Shakespeare’s Language in Digital Media (Routledge). She has prepared a documentary edition of John Stow’s A Survey of London (1598 text) for MoEML and is currently editing The Merchant of Venice (with Stephen Wittek) and Heywood’s 2 If You Know Not Me You Know Nobody for DRE.
