This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the University of Victoria copy (DA680 S87 1598) of STC 23341 (ESTC S117887) as its control text. For convenience, we began with the TEI-XML P4 file of the EEBO-TCP transcription of STC 23341(TCP A13049), available on GitHub). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. Paul Schaffner edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before 2012. Sebastian Rahtz created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. Martin Holmes downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. Martin Holmes processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. Holmes added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable patterns. MoEML Research Assistants at the University of Victoria performed the following additional tasks: supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the UVic copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. Aldersgate Ward is west of Cripplegate Ward. Both the ward and its main street are named after Aldersgate, the north gate of the city.

(ALDE2.xml) Cripplegate Ward

Cripplegate Ward is east of Aldersgate Ward and Farringdon Within Ward, encompassing area both inside and outside the Wall. The ward is named after Cripplegate.

(CRIP2.xml) Maiden Lane (Wood Street)

Maiden Lane (Wood Street) was shared between Cripplegate Ward, Aldersgate Ward, and Farringdon Within. It ran west from Wood Street, and originated as a trackway across the Covent Garden (Bebbington 210) to St. Martin’s Lane.

(MAID1.xml) Staining Lane

Staining Lane ran north-south, starting at Maiden Lane (Wood Street) in the south and turning into Oat Lane in the north. It is drawn correctly on the Agas map and is labelled as Stayning la. It served as a boundary between Cripplegate and Aldersgate wards.

(STAI1.xml) Haberdashers’ Hall

Located at the junction of Ingen Lane (otherwise known as Maiden Lane, and now forming part of Gresham Street) and Staining Lane, the Haberdashers’s Hall was the meeting place for the Habdashers’ Company. The Company aquired this location in 1458. The Hall was completely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.

Wood Street ran north-south, connecting at its southernmost end with Cheapside Street and continuing northward to Little Wood Street, which led directly into Cripplegate. It crossed over Huggin Lane, Lad Lane, Maiden Lane (Wood Street), Love Lane, Addle Lane, and Silver Street, and ran parallel to Milk Street in the east and Gutter Lane in the west. Wood Street lay within Cripplegate Ward. It is labelled as Wood Streat on the Agas map and is drawn in the correct position.

Oat Lane ran east-west, connecting Noble Street in the west to Staining Lane in the east. It is drawn on the Agas map in the correct position and is labelled as Ote la. It was in Aldersgate Ward.

Noble Street ran north-south between Maiden Lane (Wood Street) in the south and Silver Street in the north. It is all of Aldersgate street ward (Stow). On the Agas map, it is labelled as Noble Str. and is depicted as having a right-hand curve at its north end, perhaps due to an offshoot of the London Wall.

Noble Street is not to be confused with Watling Street, which bears Noble as a variant toponym.

Foster Lane ran north-south between Cheapside in the south and Oat Lane in the north. It crossed Lily Pot Lane, St. Anne’s Lane, Maiden Lane (Wood Street), and Carey Lane. It sat between St. Martin’s Lane to the west and Gutter Lane to the east. Foster Lane is drawn on the Agas Map in the correct position, labelled as Forster Lane.

(FOST1.xml) Gutter Lane

Gutter Lane ran north-south from Cheapside to Maiden Lane (Wood Street). It is to the west of Wood Street and to the east of Foster Lane, lying within the north-eastern most area of Farringdon Ward Within and serving as a boundary to Aldersgate ward. It is labelled as Goutter Lane on the Agas map.

(GUTT1.xml) Carey Lane

Carey Lane ran east-west, connecting Gutter Lane in the east and Foster Lane in the west. It ran parallel between Maiden Lane (Wood Street) in the north and Cheapside Street in the south. The Agas Map labels it Kerie la.

Cheap Ward is west of Bassinghall Ward and Coleman Street Ward. Both the ward and its main street, Cheapside, are named after West Cheap (the market).

(LOND5.xml) St. Olave (Silver Street)

According to Stow, St. Olave (Silver Street) was a church on the corner of Silver Street and Noble Street at the western edge of Aldersgate Ward. Stow writes that the church was a small thing, and without any note-worthie monuments (Stow 1598, sig. K3v). It was destroyed in the Great Fire and was not rebuilt (Carlin and Belcher 91).

St. Anne’s Lane ran east-west from Foster Lane to St. Martin’s Lane (le Grand). It was named after the Church of St. Anne and St. Agnes and is also called Pope Lane by Stow, so called of one Pope that was owner therof (Stow 1598, sig. K2v, K4r). According to Sugden, St. Anne’s Lane might have included St. Anne’s Alley as well, forming one long lane between St. Martin’s and Noble St (Sugden). Because Harben and Stow treat these two places as distinct, we have followed their lead in our own gazetteer (Harben; Stow 1598, sig. K2v).

(STAN4.xml) St. Anne’s Alley

St. Anne’s Alley ran north out of St. Anne’s Lane to Noble Street, passing from the church of St. Anne and St. Agnes to its churchyard (Harben). It now exists merely [as] a pathway through the churchyard to the church (Harben). St. Anne’s Alley, according to Sugden, might have been a part of St. Anne’s Lane, forming one long lane between St. Martin’s and Noble St (Sugden). Because Harben and Stow treat these two places as distinct, we have followed their lead in our own gazetteer (Harben; Stow 1598, sig. K2v).

(STAN31.xml) The Wall

Originally built as a Roman fortification for the provincial city of Londinium in the second century C.E., the London Wall remained a material and spatial boundary for the city throughout the early modern period. Described by Stow as high and great (Stow 1:8), the London Wall dominated the cityscape and spatial imaginations of Londoners for centuries. Increasingly, the eighteen-foot high wall created a pressurized constraint on the growing city; the various gates functioned as relief valves where development spilled out to occupy spaces "outside the wall".

(WALL2.xml) St. Martin’s Lane (le Grand)

St. Martin’s Lane (le Grand) ran north-south between St. Anne’s Lane and Cheapside Street and was located at the western edge of Aldersgate Ward. The street takes its name from the church of St. Martin’s le Grand located to the east of the street. This portion of the Agas map is labelled "S. Martins" referring to either or both the church and the street. This street is not to be confused with St. Martin’s Lane (Strand) or St. Martin’s Lane (Bridge Within Ward).

Aldersgate was one of London’s four original gates (Stow 1598, sig. C7r), labelled Alders gate on the Agas map. The gate was likely built into the Wall of London during the Roman Conquest, marking the northern entrance into the city.

Running southeast from Bishopsgate Street to Aldgate Street outside the city wall, Houndsditch Street passed through Bishopsgate Ward and Portsoken Ward. It was first paved in 1603 (Harben 311). Houndsditch Street took its name from nearby Houndsditch. Stow refers to the neighbourhood surrounding Houndsditch Street as "Houndsditch": (within the limits of Hounds-ditch) dwell many a good and honest Citizen (Stow 1633, sig. M1v).

(HOUN1.xml) Barbican

Barbican was a historically significant street that ran east-west, connecting Aldersgate Street in the west with Redcross Street and Golden Lane in the east. Barbican was more then halfe contained by Cripplegate Ward, with the rest lying within Aldersgate Ward (Stow 1:291). The street is labeled on the Agas map as Barbican.

(LLLL1.xml) Aldgate Bars

The Aldgate Bars were posts that marked the eastern limits of the City of London. They were located at the western end of Whitechapel and the eastern end of Aldgate Street. Stow makes no attempt to describe them in detail apart from mentioning their geographic importance as boundary markers (Stow). The bars were removed in the eighteenth century (Harben).

A priory of Augustinian canons once encompassing St. Bartholomew the Great, St. Bartholomew the Less, and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Dissolved by Henry VIII.

(STBA5.xml) St. Bartholomew’s Hospital

According to Stow, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was located on the west side of Smithfield in Farringdon Without Ward. Originally a religious hospital, it was founded by its first prior, Rahere, in 1102 (Stow 1598, sig. X1r). It was dissolved under Henry VIII and reendowed and granted to the City of London in 1544 as a part of the civic hospital system.

The London Charterhouse refers to a series of buildings located at the north-east end of Charterhouse Lane to the west of Aldersgate Street near Smithfield. Throughout the early modern period, the Charterhouse served many functions: prior to the Reformation, it was a Carthusian monastery; however, after the execution of Prior Houghton and other Carthusian martyrs in the mid-sixteenth century, the monastery was dissolved and the Charterhouse became a well known private residence and, later, the site of a hospital, school, and pensioners’ home. Today, the Charterhouse is used as a home for elderly pensioners, hosting about forty men.

(CHAR2.xml) Westminster Hall

Westminster Hall is the only surviving part of the original Palace of Westminster (Weinreb and Hibbert 1011) and is located on the west side of the Thames. It is located on the bottom left-hand corner of the Agas map, and is labelled as Weſtmynſter hall. Originally built as an extension to Edward the Confessor’s palace in 1097, the hall served as the setting for banquets through the reigns of many kings.

(WEST2.xml) Farringdon Ward

Farringdon Ward is the name of the larger, single ward predating both Farringdon Within Ward and Farringdon Without Ward. This ward was divided by Parliament in the 17 of Richard II, creating the separate wards of Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without.

(FARR4.xml) Farringdon Within Ward

Farringdon Within Ward shares parts of its eastern and southern borders with the western and northern boundaries of Castle Baynard Ward. This ward is called "Within" or "Infra" to differentiate it from Farringdon Without Ward and both wards take the name of William Faringdon, principle owner of Farringdon Ward, the greater ward that was separated into Farringdon Within Ward and Farringdon Without Ward in the 17 of Richard II.

According to Stow, Whitefriars Church was located on Fleetstreet (Stow 1:310). The church was occupied by the Whitefriars, a Carmelite order, until the closure of the monestaries in 1538.

The Julian calendar, in use in the British Empire until September 1752. This calendar is used for dates where the date of the beginning of the year is ambigious.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year regularized to beginning on 1 January.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year beginning on 25 March. This was the calendar used in the British Empire until September 1752.

The Gregorian calendar, used in the British Empire from September 1752. Sometimes referred to as New Style (NS). Years run from January 1 through December 31.

The Anno Mundi (year of the world) calendar is based on the supposed date of the creation of the world, which is calculated from Biblical sources. At least two different creation dates are in common use. See Anno Mundi (Wikipedia).

Regnal dates are given as the number of years into the reign of a particular monarch. Our practice is to tag such dates with @calendar="regnal", and provide an equivalent date using a more systematic calendar (usually Julian) in a custom dating attribute.

Most MoEML documents, or significant fragments with @xml:id attributes, can be addressed using the mol: prefix and accessed through the web application with their id + .xml.

The molagas prefix points to the shape representation of a location on MoEML’s OpenLayers3-based rendering of the Agas Map.

The mdt (MoEML Document Type) prefix used on <catRef>/@target points to a central taxonomy in the includes file.

The mdtlist (MoEML Document Type listing) prefix used in linking attributes points to a listings page constructed from a category in the central MDT taxonomy in the includes file. There are two variants, one with the plain @xml:id of the category, meaning all documents in the specified category, and one with the suffix _subcategories, meaning all subcategories of the category.

The molgls (MoEML gloss) prefix used on <term>/@corresp points to a a glossary entry in the GLOSS1.xml file.

This molvariant prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during automated generation of gazetteer index files. It points to an element in the generated variant spellings listing file which lists all documents which contain a particular spelling variant for a location.

This molajax prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during the static build process, to specify links which point to MoEML resources which should not be loaded into the source page during standalone processing; instead, these should be turned into links to the XML source documents, and at HTML page load time, these should be turned into AJAX calls. This is to handle the scenario in which a page such as an A-Z index of the whole site would end up containing virtually the whole site inside itself.

The molstow prefix is used on @facs attributes to link to the HCMC verison of the Stow facsimiles. Usually the first group is the year (1633) and then last is the image number (0001).

 A common abbreviated form of the appears over a hundred times in the text. This takes the form of a small latin letter y with a superscript small latin letter e above it. The Medieval Unicode Font Initiative includes this in its character recommendation 3.0, assigning it to Private Use Area codepoint U+E781, but it can be composed from a regular latin small letter y and a combining e above (codepoint U+0364). In the original TCP encoding, this was encoded as y<SUP>e</SUP> in some cases, and y<SUP>•</SUP> in others. Examination of the page-images suggests that the only difference between them is one of print clarity; the second variant is clearly not a dot above, but closer to a stroke, and the stroke could well be part of a small e. In other cases, there is no apparent difference between instances encoded with e and others encoded with a dot. This variance was apparently meaningless, and perhaps at the whim of the encoder, or the result of work by two different encoders with different approaches, so it has not been retained in this encoding.

Author A person or organization chiefly responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of a work, usually printed text. This term may also be used when more than one person or body bears such responsibility. MoEML uses the term author to designate a contributor who is wholly or partly responsible for the original content of either a born-digital document, such as an encyclopedia entry, or a primary source document, such as a MoEML Library text. Data manager A person or organization responsible for managing databases or other data sources. MoEML uses the term data manager to designate contributors who maintain and manage our databases. They add and update the data sent to us by external contributors or found by MoEML team members. They also monitor journals and sources regularly to ensure that our databases are current. Editor A person or organization who prepares for publication a work not primarily their own, such as by elucidating text, adding introductory or other critical matter, or technically directing an editorial staff. MoEML uses the term editor to designate a person who creates a modern edition of a work based on one of our encoded diplomatic transcriptions of a primary source. We use the term commentator to designate a person who adds editorial or explanatory notes to one of our diplomatic transcriptions. Markup editor A person or organization performing the coding of SGML, HTML, or XML markup of metadata, text, etc. MoEML uses the code mrk both for the primary encoder(s) and for the person who edits the encoding. MoEML’s normal workflow includes a step whereby encoders check each other’s work. We use the term encoder to designate the principal encoder, and markup editor to designate the person who checks the encoding. Project director A person or organization with primary responsibility for all essential aspects of a project, or that manages a very large project that demands senior level responsibility, or that has overall responsibility for managing projects, or provides overall direction to a project manager. MoEML’s Project Director directs the intellectual and scholarly aspects of the project, consults with the Advisory and Editorial Boards, and ensures the ongoing funding of the project. Proofreader A person who corrects printed matter. MoEML uses the term proofreader to designate a contributor who checks a transcription against an original document, or a person who corrects formatting and typographical errors in a born-digital article. Note that we use the term markup editor to designate a person who proofreads and corrects encoding. Programmer A person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. MoEML uses the term programmer to designate a person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. Printer A person or organization who prints texts, whether from type or plates. MoEML uses the term printer to designate the person named as the printer on the title page of a primary source text, or the person identified by scholars as the printer (e.g., in the English Short Title Catalogue database). In early modern printing practice, the roles of printer, bookseller, and publisher might coincide in one person, or be performed by different people. Research team head A person who directed or managed a research project. MoEML uses the terms research term head and assistant project manager interchangeably. Transcriber A person who prepares a handwritten or typewritten copy from original material, including from dictated or orally recorded material. MoEML uses the term transcriber to designate the person or organization that transcribes a primary source. In the case of EEBO-TCP transcribers, we do not know the names of the transcribers. Acceptable names for this role are transcriber, first transcriber (often the EEBO-TCP transcriber), or MoEML transcriber. Toponymist MoEML uses the term toponymist to designate the person who identifies the place references in a text and points them to the right place in our locations database. The toponymist does not necessarily encode the toponyms. In most cases, the author of a born-digital article or the editor of a primary-source document will also be the toponymist. CSS editor MoEML uses the term CSS Editor for a person who adds CSS styling to the transcription of a primary source. Alderſgate Ward.

THe next is Alderſgate Ward, taking name of that North gate of the citie: this Ward alſo cōſiſteth of diuers Stréetes and Lanes, lying aſwell within the gate, and Wall, as without: and firſt to ſpeake of that part within the gate, thus it is. The Eaſt part thereof, ioyneth vnto the weſt part of Criplegate Ward in Engain Lane, or Maiden Lane. It beginneth on the North ſide of that lane, at ſtaining Lane end, and runneth vp that Lane, from the Haberdaſhers Hall, to S. Mary Staining church: and by the church Eaſt, winding almoſt to Woodſtréete. Now on the South ſide of Ingaine (or Maiden Lane) is Alderſgate Warde. 243 is the Weſt ſide of Guthuruns Lane, to Kery Lane, and Kery Lane it ſelfe (which is of this Warde) and back againe into Engainlane, by the North ſide of the Goldſmiths Hall, to Faſter Lane: and this is the Eaſt wing of this Ward. Then is Foſter Lane almoſt wholly of this Warde, and beginneth in the South toward Cheape, on the Eaſt ſide by the North ſide of S. Foſters church, and runneth down North weſt by the Weſt ende of Engaine Lane, by Lilipot Lane, and Oate Lane, to Noble ſtréete, and through that by Shelly houſe (of olde time ſo called, as belonging to the Shelleyes) for Sir Thomas Shelley knight, was owner thereof in the 1. of Hen. the 4. It is now called Bacon houſe, becauſe the ſame was new builded by Syr Nicholas Bacon Lord Kéeper of the great Seale. Downe on that ſide by the Lane, by Seriant Fleetwoods houſe, (Recorder of London, who alſo new builded it) to S. Olaues Church in Siluer-ſtréet, which is by the Northweſt ende of this Noble ſtréete. Then againe in Foſter Lane, this Ward beginneth on the Weſt ſide therof, ouer againſt the Southweſt corner of Saint Foſters Church, and runneth downe by S. Leonards church, by Pope Lane end, and by S. Anus Lane end, which Lane is alſo of this Ward, North to the ſtone wall by the wall of the Citie, ouer againſt Bacon houſe, which is alſo of this Ward. Then haue ye the Maine ſtréete of this Ward, which is called S. Martins Lane, which includeth S. Martin on the Eaſt ſide therof, and ſo downe on both the ſides to Alderſgate. And theſe be the bounds of this Ward within the wall and gate. Without the gate, the Maine ſtréete called Alderſgate ſtréete, runneth vp North on the Eaſt ſide, to the Weſt ende of Hownds Ditch, or Barbican ſtréete: A part of which ſtréete is alſo of this Warde. And on on the Weſt ſide to Longlane, a part whereof is likewiſe of this Warde. Beyond the which Alderſgate ſtréete, is Coſewell ſtréete vp to the Barres.

And on this Weſt ſide of Alderſgate ſtréet, by S. Buttolphes church, is Briton ſtréete, which runneth Weſt to a Pumpe, and then North to the gate which entereth the church yard, ſometime pertaining to the Priorie of S. Bartholomewe on the Eaſt ſide: and on the Weſt ſide towards S. Bartholomewes Spittle, to a paine of poſtes there fixed. And theſe be the bounds of this Alderſgate Warde without.

The antiquities be theſe, Firſt in Staining Lane, of olde time ſo called (as may be ſuppoſed) of Painter ſtainers dwelling there.

On the Eaſt ſide thereof, adioyning to the Haberdaſhers Hall, be ten Almes houſes pertaining to the Haberdaſhers, wherein be placed ten Almes people of that Company, euery of them hauing eight pence the péece euery Friday for euer, by the gift of Thomas Huntlowe Haberdaſher, one of the Sheriffes in the yeare 1539. And ſir George Baron gaue them ten pounds by the yeare for euer.

Then is the ſmall parriſh Church of Saint Mary, called Staining, becauſe it ſtandeth at the North ende of Staining Lane. In the which Church being but newly builded, there remaine no Monument worth the noting.

Then is Engaine Lane, (or Mayden Lane) and at the North-Weſt corner thereof, the pariſh Church of S. Iohn Sachary. A faire Church, with the Monuments well preſerued, of ſir Nicholas Twiford Goldſmith, Maior, 1388. and Dame Margery his wife: of whoſe goods yͤ Church was made & new builded, with a Tombe for them and others of their race, 1390. Drugo Barentine Maior, 1398. He gaue faire landes to the Goldſmithes: he dwelled right againſt the Goldſmithes Hall. Betwéene the which Hall and his dwelling houſe, he builded a Galorie thwarting the ſtréete, whereby he might go from the one to the other: he was buried in this church, and Chriſtian his wife, 1427. Iohn Adis Goldſmith 1400. And Margaret his wife. Iohn Frauncis Goldſmith Maior, 1400. And Elizabeth his wife 1450. Iohn Sutton Goldſmith one of the Sheriffes, 1413. Bartholomew Seman Golde-beater, Maiſter of the Kings Mints, within the Tower of London, and the Towne of Calice, 1430. Thomas Leichfield, Iohn Hewet Eſquier, 1500. William Brekeſpere Goldſmith, 1461. Chriſtopher Eliot Goldſmith, 1505. Bartholmew Reade Goldſmith Maior, 1502. who was burried in the Charterhouſe, and gaue to this his pariſh Church one hundred pound. On the Eaſt ſide of this Faſter Lane, at Engeyne Lane ende, is the Goldſmithes Hall, a proper houſe, but not large. And therfore to ſay that Bartholmew Read Goldſmith, Maior, in the yeare 1502. kept Alderſgate Warde. 245 kept ſuch a feaſt in this Hall, as ſome haue fabuled is far incredible, and altogither vnpoſſible, conſidering the ſmalneſſe of the Hall, and number of the gueſts, which as they ſay, were more then an hundreth perſons of great eſtate. For the Meſſes & diſhes of meates to them ſerued, the paled parke in the ſame Hall, furniſhed with frutefull Trées, beaſts of venery, and other circumſtances of that pretended feaſt well weighed, Weſtminſter Hall would hardly haue ſuffiſed, and therfore I will ouerpaſſe it, and note ſomewhat of principall Goldſmiths.

Firſt I reade, that Leefſtane Goldſmith was Proueſt of this Citie, in the raign of Henry the 1. Alſo that Henry Fitz Alewin, Fits Leafſtane Goldſmith was Maior of London, in the firſt of Richard the firſt, and continued Maior 24. yeares. Alſo that Gregory Rockſly , chiefe ſay-maiſter of all the Kings Mintes within England, (and therefore by my coniecture) a Goldſmith was Maior in the 3. of Edward the firſt, and continued Maior 7. yeares togither. The William Farindon Goldſmith, Alderman of Farindon ward, one of the Sheriffes 1281. the 9. of Edward the firſt, who was a Goldſmith, as appeareth on record, as ſhall be ſhewed in Farindon Warde. Then at the North ende of Noble ſtréete, is the pariſh Church of S. Olaue in Siluer ſtréete, a ſmall thing, and without any noteworthie monuments.

On the Weſt ſide of Foſter Lane, is the ſmall pariſh Church of S. Leonards, for them of S. Martins be graunde. A nomber of Tenements beeing lately builded in place of the great Colegiate-Church of Saint Martin: that pariſh is mightily increaſed. In this Church remaine theſe Monuments. Firſt without the Church, is grauen in ſtone on the Eaſt ende, Iohn Broke it well, an eſpeciall reedifier, or new builder thereof. In the Quire grauen in braſſe, Robert Purfet Grocer, 1507. This church by caſualtie of fire, in the yeare 1548. was burnt, ſo far as it was Combuſtible, but ſince being newly repaired, there remain a fewe monuments of antiquitie of Thomas Beckhenton, Clarke of the pipe, who was buried there 1499. Then in S. Martins lane, was of old time a faire and large Colledge of a Deane and ſecular Cannons, or Prieſts, which houſe had great priuiledges both of Sanctuary & otherwiſe, and was called S. Martins le graunde: Founded by Ingelricus & Ewardus his brother, in the yeare 1056. and confirmed by William the Conqueror, as appeareth by his Charter, dated 1068. This Colledge was ſurrendred to K. E. the 6. the 2. of his raigne, in the yeare 1548. and the ſame yeare the Colledge church was pulled down, and in place therof many houſes foorthwith builded, highly priſed, and letten to ſtrangers borne, and other ſuch as claime the benefit of yͤ priuiledges which were at the firſt granted only to yͤ church, and to the Deane, Prebends & Canons, ſeruing God according to yͤ foundatiō. Lower down on the weſt ſide of S. Martins lane, in the pariſh of S. Anne, almoſt by Alderſgate, is one great houſe, commōly called Northumberland houſe: it belonged to Hen. Percey. K. Hen. the 4. in the 7. of his raign, gaue this houſe, with yͤ tenements therunto appertaining, to Alderſgate Ward. 247 to Quéene Iane his wife, and then it was called her Wardrobe.

Now without Alderſgate, on the Eaſt ſide of Alderſgate ſtréete, is the Cookes Hall: which Cookes or Paſtelars were admitted to be a Company, and to haue a Maiſter and Wardens, in the 22. of Ed. the 4. From thence along vnto Houndſditch or Barbican ſtréete, be many faire houſes. On the weſt ſide alſo be the like faire buildings, till ye come to Longlane, and ſo to Coſwell ſtreete. In Britten ſtréet is one proper pariſh church of S. Buttolphe, in which church, was ſometime a brotherhood of S. Fabian, and Sebeſtian, founded in the yeare 1377. the 51. of Ed. the 3. and confirmed by H. the 4. in the 6. of his raign. She published papers in The Corvette (2018), The Albatross (2019), and PLVS VLTRA (2020) and presented at the English Undergraduate Conference (2019), Qualicum History Conference (2020), and the Digital Humanities Summer Institute’s Project Management in the Humanities Conference (2021). While her primary research focus was sixteenth and seventeenth century England, she completed her honours thesis on Soviet ballet during the Russian Cultural Revolution. During her time at MoEML, Kate made significant contributions to the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey of London, old-spelling anthology of mayoral shows, and old-spelling library texts. She authored the MoEML’s first Project Management Manual and "quickstart" guidelines for new employees and helped standardize the Personography and Bibliography. She is currently a student at the University of British Columbia’s iSchool, working on her masters in library and information science.

Junior Programmer 2018-2020. Research Associate 2020-2021. Tracey received her PhD from the Department of English at the University of Victoria in the field of Science and Technology Studies. Her research focuses on the algorhythmics of networked communications. She was a 2019-20 President’s Fellow in Research-Enriched Teaching at UVic, where she taught an advanced course on Artificial Intelligence and Everyday Life. Tracey was also a member of the Linked Early Modern Drama Online team, between 2019 and 2021. Between 2020 and 2021, she was a fellow in residence at the Praxis Studio for Comparative Media Studies, where she investigated the relationships between artificial intelligence, creativity, health, and justice. As of July 2021, Tracey has moved into the alt-ac world for a term position, while also teaching in the English Department at the University of Victoria.

Kim McLean-Fiander comes to The Map of Early Modern London from the Cultures of Knowledge digital humanities project at the University of Oxford, where she was the editor of Early Modern Letters Online, an open-access union catalogue and editorial interface for correspondence from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. She is currently Co-Director of a sister project to EMLO called Women’s Early Modern Letters Online (WEMLO). In the past, she held an internship with the curator of manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library, completed a doctorate at Oxford on paratext and early modern women writers, and worked a number of years for the Bodleian Libraries and as a freelance editor. She has a passion for rare books and manuscripts as social and material artifacts, and is interested in the development of digital resources that will improve access to these materials while ensuring their ongoing preservation and conservation. An avid traveler, Kim has always loved both London and maps, and so is particularly delighted to be able to bring her early modern scholarly expertise to bear on the MoEML project.
