                    For convenience, we began with the TEI-XML P4 file of the EEBO-TCP transcription
                    of <idno type="STC">STC 23341</idno>(<idno type="TCP">TCP A13049</idno>),
                    available on <ref target="https://github.com/textcreationpartnership/A13049">GitHub</ref>). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. <name ref="mol:SCHA2">Paul Schaffner</name> edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in
                    or before <date notAfter="2012">2012</date>. <name ref="mol:RAHT1">Sebastian
                        Rahtz</name> created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to
                    TEI-P5 in or before 2012. <name ref="mol:HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name> downloaded
                    the XML file from the GitHub repository. <name ref="mol:HOLM3">Martin
                        Holmes</name> processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with
                    MoEML’s TEI customization. Holmes added proleptic catchwords (based on the first
                    word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable
                    patterns. <name type="org" ref="mol:TEAM1">MoEML Research Assistants</name> at
                    the <name type="org" ref="mol:UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> performed the
                    following additional tasks: supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP
                    transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the <name type="org" ref="mol:UVIC3">UVic</name> copy and against the copy itself;
                    corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks;
                    added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The
                    text was then checked by Editor <name ref="mol:JENS1">Janelle
                    Jenstad</name>.</p>

                    watches in Cities and Borough towns were commanded by <name ref="mol:HENR7">king<lb/>

                    better obſeruing of peace and quietneſſe<lb/> amongſt his people: And farther by

                            church</hi> Con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>duite</ref>, and vp <ref rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R" target="mol:GRAC1">Graſſe church
                        ſtreete</ref> into <ref rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R" target="mol:CORN2">Cornhill</ref>, and through<lb/> it into <ref target="mol:CHEA5">weſt <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">Cheape</hi></ref>, againe, and ſo broke
                    vp, the whole way or<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dered for this marching watch,
                    extended to <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">3200</hi>. Taylors yards<lb/>
                    of aſſize, for the furniture whereof with lightes there were appoin<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ted <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">700</hi>.
                    Creſſetes, <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">500</hi>. of them being founde
                    by the Compani<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>es, the other <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">200</hi>. by the Chamber of <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R"><ref target="mol:LOND5">London</ref></hi>:
                    beſides the which<lb/> lights euery Conſtable in <ref rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R" target="mol:LOND5">London</ref>) in number
                    more then <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">240</hi>.<lb/> had his Creſſet:
                    the charge of euery Creſſet was in light two ſhil<lb rend="hidden"/>linges foure
                    pence, and euery Creſſet had two men, one to beare or<lb/> hold it, an other to
                    beare a bag with light, and to ſerue it, ſo that the<lb/> poore men perteyning

                    commendation whereof (namely<lb/> in time of peace to be vſed) he hath wordes to
                    this effect. The Arti<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ficers of ſondrie ſortes were
                    thereby well ſet a worke, none but<lb/> rich men charged: poore men helped: olde
                    Souldiers, Trompiters,<lb/> Drommers, Fifes, and enſigne bearers, with ſuch like
                    men, meet<lb/> for Princes ſeruice kept in vre, wherein the ſafety and defence

                <p>In the moneth of Auguſt aboute the feaſt of S. <hi rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R">Bartlemew</hi><lb/> the
                        Apoſtle,<note type="editorial" resp="mol:LEBE1">Celebrated on 24
                        August.</note> before the Lord Mayor, Aldermen, and Shiriffes of<lb/>
                    <ref rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R" target="mol:LOND5">London</ref> placed in
                    a large Tent neare vnto <ref rendition="#stow_1598_watches_R" target="mol:CLER1">Clarken well</ref>, of old<lb/> time were diuers daies ſpent in the paſtime
                    of wreſtling, where<lb/> the Officers of the Citie: namely the Shiriffes,
                    Serieantes and<lb/> Yeomen, the Portars of the kinges beame, or weigh houſe,
                    and<lb/> other of the Citie were challengers of all men, in the ſuburbes
