This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the University of Victoria copy (DA680 S87 1633) of STC 23345 (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in UVic ContentDM (Collection 25, 993). For convenience, and only because STC 23345 has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription of the post-1640 STC 23345.5/Wing S5773A (TCP A13053), available on GitHub). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. Paul Schaffner edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before 2012. Sebastian Rahtz created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. Martin Holmes downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. Joey Takeda and Martin Holmes processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable patterns. MoEML Research Assistants at the University of Victoria performed the following additional tasks: transcribed the 1633 text from the UVic copy in those places where the post-1640 text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the UVic copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor Janelle Jenstad.

Most MoEML documents, or significant fragments with xml:id attributes, can be addressed using the mol: prefix and accessed through the web application with their id + .xml.

The molagas prefix points to the shape representation of a location on MoEML’s OpenLayers3-based rendering of the Agas Map.

The mdt (MoEML Document Type) prefix used on catRef/target points to a central taxonomy in the includes file.

The mdtlist (MoEML Document Type listing) prefix used in linking attributes points to a listings page constructed from a category in the central MDT taxonomy in the includes file. There are two variants, one with the plain xml:id of the category, meaning all documents in the specified category, and one with the suffix _subcategories, meaning all subcategories of the category.

The molgls (MoEML gloss) prefix used on term/corresp points to a a glossary entry in the GLOSS1.xml file.

This molvariant prefix is used on ref/target attributes during automated generation of gazetteer index files. It points to an element in the generated variant spellings listing file which lists all documents which contain a particular spelling variant for a location.

This molajax prefix is used on ref/target attributes during the static build process, to specify links which point to MoEML resources which should not be loaded into the source page during standalone processing; instead, these should be turned into links to the XML source documents, and at HTML page load time, these should be turned into AJAX calls. This is to handle the scenario in which a page such as an A-Z index of the whole site would end up containing virtually the whole site inside itself.

The molstow prefix is used on facs attributes to link to the HCMC verison of the Stow facsimiles. Usually the first group is the year (1633) and then last is the image number (0001).

The molshows prefix is used on facs attributes to link to the copies of page-images from mayoral shows stored in the london account on the HCMC server. The first group is the year (1633), the second is the source repository, and then last is the image file name.

The sb prefix is used on ref/target attributes to link to Stow’s Books URLs at UToronto.

Encoding has been done using the recommendations for Level 4 of the TEI in Libraries Guidelines. Digital page images are linked to the text file.

The Towne-ditch without the Wall of the CITIE.

THe Ditch, which partly now remaineth, and compaſſed the wall of the Citie, was begun to be made by the Londoners, in the yeere 1211. and finiſhed 1213. the 15. of K. Iohn: this ditch being then made of 200. foot broad, cauſed no ſmall hindrance to the Canons of the holy Trinitie, whoſe Church ſtood neere Ealdgate, for that the ſaid ditch paſſed through their ground from the Tower unto Biſhopſgate. This Ditch being originally made for the defence of the Citie, was alſo long time together carefully cleanſed and maintained, as need required: but now of late neglected, and forced eyther to a very narrow, and the ſame a filthy channell, or altogether ſtopped up, for Gardens planted, & houſes builded thereon, even to the Wall, and in many places upon both Ditch & Wall, houſes are builded, to what danger of the Citie, I leave to wiſer conſideration than mine owne: and can but wiſh that reformation might be had.

In the yeere of Chriſt 1354. 28. Ed. 3. the ditch of this Citie flowing over the banke into the Tower ditch, the King commanded the ſaid ditch of the Citie to be cleanſed and ſo ordered, that the overflowing thereof, ſhould not force any filth into the Tower ditch.

Ann. 1379. Iohn Philpot, Maior of London, cauſed this ditch to be clenſed, and every houſhold to pay 5. d. which was for a dayes worke toward the charges therof. R. 2. in the 10. of his reigne, granted a Toll to be taken of wares ſold by water or by land for 10. yeeres, towards repairing the wall, & clenſing the ditch.

Thomas Fawconer Maior, 1414. cauſed the ditch to be clenſed.

Ralph Ioſeline Maior, 1477. cauſed the whole ditch to be cleanſed, and ſo from time to time it was cleanſed and otherwiſe reformed: namely, in 1519. the 10 of Hen. 8. for clenſing and ſcowring the Ditch Bridges of this Citie. ditch, betweene Ealdgate and the Poſterne next the Tower ditch: the chiefe ditcher had by the day 7. pence, the ſecond ditcher 6. pence, the other ditchers, 5. pence. And every vagabond (for ſo were they then termed) one penny the day, meat and drink, at the charges of the Citie.

In my remembrance alſo the ſame was cleanſed, namely the Moore ditch, when Sir William Hollies was Maior, in the yeere 1540. and not long before, from the Tower of London to Ealdgate.

It was againe cleanſed in the yeere 1549. Henry Ameotes being Maior, at the charges of the Companies. And againe 1569. the 11. of Q. Eliz. for cleanſing the ſame Ditch, betweene Ealdgate and the Poſterne, and making a new Sewere, and Wharfe of Timber, from the head of the Poſterne into the towne ditch, 814. l. 15. s. 8. d. Before the which time, the ſaid ditch lay open, without wall or pall, having therein great ſtore of very good fiſh, of divers ſorts, as many men yet living, who have taken and taſted them, can well witnes: but now no ſuch matter, the charge of cleanſing is ſpared, and great profit made by letting out the bankes, with the ſpoile of the whole ditch.

I am not ignorant of two Fifteenes granted by a common Councell, in the yeere 1595. for the reformation of this ditch, and that a ſmall portion thereof, to wit, betweene Biſhopſgate and the Poſterne called Mooregate, was cleanſed, and made ſomewhat broader than it was before: but filling againe very faſt, by reaſon of over-raiſing the ground neere adjoyning, therefore never the better: and I will ſo leave it, for I cannot helpe it.
