            <p>This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> copy (<idno type="call">DA680 S87 1633</idno>) of
               <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in
               <ref target="http://contentdm.library.uvic.ca/cdm/compoundobject/collection/collection25/id/993">UVic ContentDM</ref> (Collection 25, <idno>993</idno>).
               For convenience, and only because <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription
               of the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> <idno type="STC">STC 23345.5</idno>/<idno type="Wing">Wing S5773A</idno>
               (<idno type="TCP">TCP A13053</idno>), available on <ref target="https://github.com/textcreationpartnership/A13053">GitHub</ref>). The names of the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers are unknown. <name ref="PERS1.xml#SCHA2">Paul Schaffner</name> edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before <date notAfter="2012">2012</date>.
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#RAHT1">Sebastian Rahtz</name> created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name>
               downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. <name ref="PERS1.xml#TAKE1">Joey Takeda</name> and <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name> processed the file programmatically
               to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on
               predictable patterns. <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#TEAM1">MoEML Research Assistants</name> at the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> performed the
               following additional tasks: transcribed the <date when-custom="1633" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1633</date> text from the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy
               in those places where the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic
               catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#JENS1">Janelle Jenstad</name>.</p>

<lb/>corner of <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leaden-hall</ref>: and on the North
<lb/>side, from the South-west corner, to <ref target="STMA7.xml">S.
<lb/><hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, to another corner over a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gainst <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leaden-hall</ref>.

      <p>Now for <ref target="STMA7.xml">Saint <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, the west
<lb/>side thereof is this <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> Ward</ref>,
<lb/>and also the street which runneth by the
<lb/>North end of this <ref target="STMA7.xml">S. <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, on both
<lb/>sides; frō thence west to an house called
<lb/>the <ref target="WRES1.xml">Wrestlers</ref>, a signe so called, almost to
         <lb/><ref target="BISH2.xml">Bishopsgate</ref>. And these are the bounds
<lb/>of this small Ward.</p>
                  <p>Monuments or places notable in this
<lb/>Ward, bee these: In <hi><ref target="LIME2.xml">Limestreet</ref></hi> are
<lb/>divers faire houses for Merchants and
<lb/>others: there was sometime a mansion
                     <lb/>house of the Kings,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">An house in <ref target="LIME2.xml"><hi>Lime<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>street</hi></ref>, cal<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>led the <ref target="ARTI2.xml">Kings <hi>Ar<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tirce</hi></ref>.
                     </label> called the <ref target="ARTI2.xml">Kings <hi>Ar<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tirce</hi></ref>, whereof I finde record in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA1_14" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">14.
<lb/>of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA1"><hi>Edward</hi> the first</name></date>, but now growne
<lb/>out of knowledge. I read also of ano<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther great house in the West side of
<lb/><ref target="LIME2.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi></ref>, having a Chappell on the
<lb/>South, and a Garden on the West, then
<lb/>belonging to the <name ref="PERS1.xml#NEVI3">Lord <hi>Nevill</hi></name>, which
<lb/>Garden is now called the <!--place entries for gardens--><hi>Greene yard</hi> of
<lb/>the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden</hi> hall</ref>.</p>
      <p>This house, in the <date when-custom="r_RICH1_09" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">ninth of <hi><name ref="PERS1.xml#RICH1">Richard
<lb/>the second</name></hi></date>, pertained to <name ref="PERS1.xml#BURL2">Sir <hi>Simon Bur<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ley</hi></name>, and <name ref="PERS1.xml#BURL3">Sir <hi>Iohn Burley</hi></name> his brother: and
<lb/>of late the said house was taken downe,
<lb/>and the fore-front thereof new builded
<lb/>of timber, by <name ref="PERS1.xml#OFLE2"><hi>Hugh Offley</hi></name>, Alderman.</p>
      
      <p>At the North-west corner of <ref target="LIME2.xml"><hi>Lime<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>street</hi></ref>, was (of old time) one great Mes<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>suage, <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">

<lb/>Alderman: he gave with his daughter
<lb/><hi><name ref="PERS1.xml#KIRT4">Grisild</name></hi>, to <hi><name ref="PERS1.xml#WOOD8">Nicholas Woodroffe</name></hi>, the said
<lb/>great house, with two tenements before
<lb/>it, in lieu of an hundred pounds, and

<lb/>gouts in his joynts, of his hands and
<lb/>legs, that he could neither feed him<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>selfe, nor goe further than he was led,
<lb/>much lesse was he able to climbe, and
<lb/>take the pleasure of the heighth of his

      <p>More,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Legacies given by <name ref="PERS1.xml#EYRE1"><hi>Simon Eyre</hi></name>. Daily Ser<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>vice by note, &amp;c. and three free schooles in the <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Lea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>den Hall</ref>.</label> hee gave 2000. Markes upon
<lb/>a condition, which not performed, was
<lb/>then to be distributed to maids marria<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ges, and other deeds of charity: he also
<lb/>gave 3000. Markes to the Drapers, up<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>on condition, that they should within
<lb/>one yeere after his decease, establish
<lb/>perpetually a Master or Warden, five se<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cular Priests, sixe Clarkes, and two
<lb/>Queristers, to sing daily Divine Service
<lb/>by note for ever, in his Chappell of

<lb/>King Letters patents, lately before gran<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ted unto them, touching the Tronage or
<lb/>weighing of Wares to be holden at the
<lb/><ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-Hall</hi></ref>; yet suit should be made
<lb/>to the King for new letters patents, to
<lb/>be granted to the Maior of the Staple,
<lb/>for the Tronage of Wools to bee holden
<lb/>there, and order to be taken by the dis<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cretion of <name ref="PERS1.xml#COOK2"><hi>Thomas Cooke</hi></name>, then Maior, the
<lb/>Counsell of the City, <name ref="PERS1.xml#FIEL3"><hi>Geffrey Filding</hi></name>
<lb/>then Maior of the Staple at <ref target="WEST1.xml"><hi>Westminster</hi></ref>,
<lb/>and of the Kings Councell, what should
<lb/>be paid to the Maior and Aldermen of
<lb/>the City, for the laying and housing of
<lb/>the Wools there, that so they might be
<lb/>brought forth and weighed, &amp;c.</p>
      <p>Touching the Chappell there,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">A brother<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>hood of 60 Priests in the Chap<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pell of <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden hall</hi></ref>.
                     </label> I find,
                     <lb/>that in the yeere <date when-custom="1466" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1466</date>. by licence obtai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ned of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA4">King <hi>Edward</hi> the fourth</name> in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA4_06" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">6.
<lb/>of his reigne</date>, a <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#FRAT2">Fraternity of the Trini<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ty</name> of 60. Priests (beside other brethren
<lb/>and sisters) in the same Chappell, was
<lb/>founded by <hi><name ref="PERS1.xml#ROUS1">William Rouse</name>, <name ref="PERS1.xml#RISB1">Iohn Risby</name></hi>,
<lb/>and <name ref="PERS1.xml#ASHB1"><hi>Thomas Ashby</hi></name> Priests, some of the
<lb/>which 60. Priests, every Market-day in
<lb/>the fore-noone, did celebrate Divine
<lb/>Service there, to such Market people as
<lb/>repaired to prayer, and once every yeere
<lb/>they met all together, and had solemne
<lb/>Service, with Procession of all the Bre<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>

<lb/>in the yeere <date when-custom="1512" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1512</date>. by a common Coun<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cell confirmed to the 60. <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#FRAT2"><hi>Trinity</hi> Priests</name>
<lb/>and to their successors, at the will of the
<lb/>Maior and Communalty.</p>
                  <p>In the yeere <date datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1484">1484</date>. a great fire hap<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ned upon the <hi>Leaden-Hall</hi>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref> burned.</label> by what ca<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sualty I know not, but much housing
<lb/>was there destroyed, with all the stocks
<lb/>for Guns, and other provision belonging
<lb/>to the City, which was a great losse,
<lb/>and no lesse charge to bee repaired by
<lb/>them.</p>
      <p>In the yeere <date when-custom="1503" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1503</date>. the <date when-custom="r_HENR5_18" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">eighteenth of
         <lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR5"><hi>Henry</hi> the seventh</name></date>,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Rich. Arol.</label> a request was made
<lb/>by the Commons of the City, concer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ning the usage of the said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, in
<lb/>forme as followeth:</p>
                  <p>Please it the Lord Maior, Aldermen,
                     <lb/>and Common Councell,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">A request of the Ci<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tizens to the Maior and Alder<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>men.</label> to enact, that all
<lb/>Frenchmen bringing Canvas, Linnen cloth,
<lb/>and other wares to be sold, and all Forreins
<lb/>bringing Wolsteds, Sayes, Stamins, Kive<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rings, Nayles, Iron worke, or any other
<lb/>wares, and also all manner Forreins, bring<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ing Lead to the City to be sold; Shall bring
<lb/>all such their wares aforesaid, to the open
<lb/>Market of the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-Hall</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden hall</hi></ref> Market for Can<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>vas and linnen cloth.</label> and no where
<lb/>else to be shewed, sold, and uttered, like as
<lb/>of old time it hath been used, upon paine of
<lb/>forfeiture of all the said wares, shewed or
<lb/>sold in any other place than aforesaid: And
<lb/>the shew of the said wares to bee made three
<lb/>dayes in a weeke, that is to say, Munday,
<lb/>Tuesday, and Wednesday. It is also thought
<lb/>reasonable, that the common Beame be kept
<lb/>from henceforth in the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, and
<lb/>the Farmer to pay therefore reasonable rent
                     <lb/>to the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Chamber</name>: for better it is that the
<lb/><name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Chamber</name> have advantage thereby, than a
<lb/>forraine person. And also the said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>,
<lb/>which is more chargeable now by halfe
<lb/>than profitable, shall better beare out the
<lb/>charges thereof. Also the common Beame
<lb/>for Wool at <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leadenhall</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Common Beame to be kept in <hi><ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leaden hall</ref>. <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leaden hall</ref></hi> pertai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ning to the Com<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>munalty.</label> may pay yeerely a
<lb/>rent to the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Chamber of <hi>London</hi></name>, toward
<lb/>the supportation and charges of the same
<lb/>place: for reason it is, that a common Office
<lb/>occupied upon a common ground, beare a
<lb/>charge to the use of the Communalty. Also
<lb/>that Forraines bringing Wools, Fels, or any
<lb/>other Merchandizes or wares to <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Wools, Fels, and other Mer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chandizes to be sold in <hi>Leaden-hall</hi>.
                     </label> to be kept there for the sale and Mar<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ket; may pay more largely for keeping of their
<lb/>goods, than freemen. <hi>Thus much for the
<lb/>request of the Commons at that time</hi>.
                  </p>
      <p>Now to set downe some proofe,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">
                        <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden hall</hi></ref> used as a Garner.</label> that
<lb/>the said Hall hath been imployed and u<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sed as a Granary for Corne and graine
         <lb/>(as the same was first appointed) lea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ving all former examples,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">
                        <name ref="PERS1.xml#ACHL1"><hi>Roger Ach<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ley</hi></name> Maior made good pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>vision for the City.</label> this one may
<lb/>suffice: <name ref="PERS1.xml#ACHL1"><hi>Roger Acheley</hi></name> Maior of <hi>London</hi>
<lb/>in the yeere <date when-custom="1512" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1512</date>. the <date when-custom="r_HENR1_03" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">third of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR1"><hi>Henry</hi>
<lb/>the 8</name></date>. when the said Maior entred the
<lb/>Maioralty, there was not found 100.
<lb/>quarters of Wheat in all the Garners of
         <lb/>this City,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Bread Carts of <ref target="POOL1.xml"><hi>Stratford</hi> the <hi>Bow</hi></ref>.
                     </label> either within the liberties, or
<lb/>neere adjoyning. Through the which
<lb/>scarcity, when the Carts of <ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref>
<lb/>came laden with Bread to the City (as
<lb/>they had been accustomed) there was
<lb/>such presse about them, that one man
<lb/>was ready to destroy another, in stri<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ving to be served for their mony. But
<lb/>this scarcity lasted not long: for the
<lb/>Maior (in short time) made such provi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sion for Wheat, that the Bakers both
<lb/>of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, and of <ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref>, were weary
<lb/>of taking it up, and were forced to take
<lb/>much more than they would, and for
<lb/>the rest the Maior laid out the money
<lb/>and stored it up in <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, and o<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther Garners of the City. This Maior
<lb/>also kept the Market so well, that hee
<lb/>would be at the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, by foure a
<lb/>clocke in the Summers mornings, and
<lb/>from thence he went to other Markets,
<lb/>to the great comfort of the Citizens.</p>
                  <p>I read also, that in the yeere, <date when-custom="1528" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1528</date>.
                     <lb/>the <date when-custom="r_HENR1_20" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">20. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR1"><hi>Henry</hi> the 8</name></date>. Surveyors were
<lb/>appointed to view the Garners of the
<lb/>City, namely, the <ref target="BRID5.xml"><hi>Bridgehouse</hi></ref> and the
<lb/><ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, how they were stored of
<lb/>Graine for the service of the City. And
<lb/>because I have here before spoken of
<lb/>the bread Carts comming from <hi>Strat<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ford</hi> at the <hi>Bow</hi>, ye shall understand, that
<lb/>of old time, the Bakers of bread at <hi>Strat<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ford</hi> were allowed to bring daily (ex<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cept the Sabbath and principall Feasts)
<lb/>divers long Carts laden with bread, the
<lb/>same being two ounces in the penny
<lb/>wheaten loafe heavier than the penny
<lb/>wheaten loafe baked in the City, the
<lb/>same to be sold in <ref target="CHEA2.xml"><hi>Cheape</hi></ref>, three or foure
<lb/>Carts standing there, betweene <ref target="GUTT1.xml"><hi>Guthe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rans</hi> lane</ref> and <ref target="FOST1.xml"><hi>Fausters</hi> lane</ref> end, one cart
<lb/>on <ref target="CORN2.xml"><hi>Corne-hill</hi></ref>, by the Conduit, and one
<lb/>other in <ref target="GRAC1.xml"><hi>Grasse-street</hi></ref>. And I have read,
<lb/>that in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA5_04" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">fourth yeere of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA5"><hi>Edward</hi> the
<lb/>second</name></date>, <name ref="PERS1.xml#REFH1"><hi>Richard Reffeham</hi></name> being Maior,
<lb/>a Baker named <name ref="PERS1.xml#STRA4"><hi>Iohn</hi> of <hi>Stratford</hi></name>, for
                     <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">making</fw>

                        <hi>Liber. D</hi>. A Baker of <ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref> punished in <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref> for baking bread un<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>der the Assize.</label>
<lb/>was with a fooles hood on his head, and
<lb/>loaves of bread about his necke, drawn
<lb/>on a Hurdle through the streets of this
<lb/>City. Moreover, in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA3_44" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">44. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA3"><hi>Edward</hi>
<lb/>the third</name></date>, <name ref="PERS1.xml#CHIC8"><hi>Iohn Chichester</hi></name> being Maior
<lb/>of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, I read in the visions of <hi>Pierce
<lb/>Plowman</hi>, a Booke so called, as follow<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>eth.</p>
      <p>There was a carefull commune,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left"><name ref="PERS1.xml#MALV1">Iohn Mal<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>verne</name>.</label> when no
<lb/>Cart came to towne with Basket bread from
<lb/><ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref>:
         <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Bread Carts frō <ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref> missed in this City in time of scarcity.</label> tho gan beggers weepe, and
<lb/>workemen were agast, a little this will bee
<lb/>thought long in the date of our Dirte, in a
<lb/>dry Averell a thousand and three hundred,
<lb/>twice thirty and ten, &amp;c.</p>
                  <p>I read also in the <date when-custom="r_HENR1_20" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">20. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR1"><hi>Henry</hi> the 8</name></date>.
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#SPEN9">Sir <hi>Iames Spencer</hi></name> being Maior, sixe Ba<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>kers of <ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref> were merced in the
<lb/><ref target="GUIL1.xml"><hi>Guild-hall</hi></ref> of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, for baking under
<lb/>the size appointed. These Bakers of
<lb/><ref target="POOL1.xml">Stratford</ref> left serving this City, I know
<lb/>not upon what occasion, above forty
<lb/>yeeres since.</p>
                  <p>In the yeere <date when-custom="1519" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1519</date>. a petition was ex<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>
                     hibited by the Commons to the <name ref="ORGS1.xml#COUN5" type="org">Com<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>mon Councell</name>,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">A Petition of the Commons concer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ning the use of the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden hall</hi></ref>.
                     </label> and was by them allow<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ed, concerning the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, how they
<lb/>would have it used, <hi>viz</hi>.
                  </p>
                  <p>Meekely beseeching, sheweth unto your
<lb/>good Lordship, and Masterships, divers Ci<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tizens of this City, which (under correction)
<lb/>thinke, that the great place called the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Lea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>den-hall</hi></ref>, should nor ought not to be letten
<lb/>out to farme, to any person or persons, and
<lb/>in especiall, to any fellowship or company in<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>corporate, to have and hold the same Hall
<lb/>for terme of yeeres, for such inconveniences
<lb/>as thereby may ensue, and come to the hurt
<lb/>of the Common weale of the said City in
<lb/>time to come, as somewhat more largely may
<lb/>appeare in the Articles following.</p>
                  <p>First, if any assembly, or hasty gathering
<lb/>of the Commons of the said City, for sup<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pressing or sub duing of misruled people with<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>in the said City, hereafter shall happen to
<lb/>be called or commanded by the Maior, Al<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dermen and other Governours and Counsel<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>lors of the said City for the time being;
<lb/>there is none so convenient, meet and neces<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sary a place to assemble them in, within the
<lb/>said City, as the said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, both for
<lb/>largenesse of roome, and for their sure de<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>fence in time of their counselling together a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bout the premises. Also, in that place hath
<lb/>beene used the Artillery, Guns, and other
<lb/>Armors of the said City, to be safely kept in
<lb/>a readinesse, for the safeguard, wealth and
<lb/>defence of the said City, to be had and occu<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>piedat times when need required. As also the
<lb/>store of timber, for the necessary reparations
<lb/>of the tenements belonging to the Chamber of
                     <lb/>the said City,<note type="editorial" resp="PERS1.xml#ROTH4">I.e., the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Chamber of London</name>.</note> there commonly hath beene
<lb/>kept.</p>
                  <p>Item, if any Triumph or Noblenesse were
<lb/>to be done, or shewed by the Communalty of
<lb/>the City, for the honour of our Soveraigne
<lb/>Lord the King, and Realme, and for the
<lb/>worship of the said City: the said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>
<lb/>is the most meet and convenient place,
<lb/>to prepare and order the said Triumph there<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>in, and from thence to issue forth to the pla<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ces thereof appointed.</p>
                  <p>Item, at any largesse or dole of any mo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ney, made unto the poore people of this City;
<lb/>it hath been used, to bee done and given in
<lb/>the said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, for that the said place
<lb/>is most meet therefore.</p>
      <p>Item,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">
                     <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leaden hall</ref>, a free mar<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ketplace for victu<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>allers, and the people to ſtand drie.</label> the honourable Father, that was
<lb/>maker of the said Hall, had a speciall will,
<lb/>intent and mind, that (as it is comonly said)
<lb/>the Market men and women, that came to
<lb/>the City with victuals and other things,
<lb/>should have their free standing within the
<lb/>said <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref> in wet weather, to keepe
<lb/>themselves and their wares dry, and there<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>by to encourage them, and all other, to have
<lb/>the better will and desire, the more plenti<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ously to resort to the said City, to victuall
<lb/>the same. And if the said Hall should bee
<lb/>letten to farme, the will of the said honoura<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ble Father should never be fulfilled, nor take
<lb/>effect.</p>
                  <p>Item, if the said place, which is the chiefe
<lb/>fortresse and most necessary place within all
<lb/>the City, for the tuition and safegard of the
<lb/>same, should bee letten out to farme, out of
<lb/>the hands of the chiefe heads of the same Ci<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ty, and especially to any other body politike,
<lb/>it might at length (by likelihood) be an oc<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>casion of discord and debate betweene the
<lb/>said bodies politike, which God defend.</p>
                  <p>For these and many other great and rea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sonable causes, which hereafter shall be shew<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ed to this honouoable Court, your said besee<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chors thinke it much necessary, that the said
<lb/>Hall bee still in the hands of this City, and
<lb/>to be surely kept by sad and discreet Officers
<lb/>in such wise, that it might alway be ready
<lb/>to bee used and occupied, for the common
<lb/>weale of the said City when need shall re<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>quire, and in no wise to be letten to any body

<lb/>was made about the <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden Hall</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden Hall</hi></ref>, meant to have been made a Burse for Mer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chants.</label> to
<lb/>have the same made a Burse for the As<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sembly of Merchants, as they had been
<lb/>accustomed in <ref target="LOMB1.xml"><hi>Lumbard-street</hi></ref>: many
<lb/>Common Councels were called to that
<lb/>end but in the yeere <date when-custom="1535" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1535</date>. <name ref="PERS1.xml#CHAM8"><hi>Iohn Champ<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>neis</hi></name> being Maior, it was fully concluded,
<lb/>that the Burse should remaine in <ref target="LOMB1.xml"><hi>Lum<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bard-street</hi></ref>, as afore, and <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden Hall</hi></ref> no
<lb/>more to be spoken of concerning that
<lb/>matter.</p>
                  <p>The use of <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden Hall</hi></ref> in my youth
<lb/>was thus: In a part of the North Qua<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>drant, on the East side of the North
<lb/>gate, were the common beames, for
<lb/>weighing of Wooll and other Wares,
<lb/>as had been accustomed: On the West
<lb/>side of the gate was the Scales to weigh
<lb/>meale: the other three sides were reser<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ved (for the most part) to the making
<lb/>and resting of the Pageants shewed at
<lb/>Midsummer in the watch: the remnant
<lb/>of the sides &amp; Quadrāts were imployed
<lb/>for the stowage of Woolsacks, but not
<lb/>closed up: the lofts above were partly
<lb/>used by the Painters, in working for the
<lb/>decking of Pageants and other devices,
<lb/>for beautifying of the Watch and
<lb/>Watch-men, the residue of the lofts
<lb/>were letten out to Merchants, the
<lb/>Wool-winders and Packers therein to
<lb/>winde and packe their Wools. And
<lb/>thus much for <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref> may suffice.</p>
                  <p>Now on the North of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi>
<lb/>Ward</ref>, in the high street are divers faire
<lb/>houses for Merchants, and proper tene<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ments for Artificers, with an Alley also
<lb/>called <ref target="SHAF2.xml"><hi>Shaft Alley</hi></ref>, of the Shaft or May-pole
<lb/>sometime resting over the gate
<lb/>thereof, as I have declared in <ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi>
<lb/>Ward</ref>.</p>
                  <p>In the yeere <date when-custom="1576" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1576</date>. partly at the char<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ges of the <ref target="STAN108.xml">parish of S. <hi>Andrew</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">A Pumpe in the high street of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Lime-street</hi> Ward</ref>.</label> and partly
<lb/>at the charges of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Chamber of <hi>Lond</hi></name>.
<lb/>a water-Pumpe was raised in the high
                     <lb/>street of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> Ward</ref>,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <ref target="CORN2.xml"><hi>Cornehill</hi> street</ref> in some place raised two fadome higher than of old time, as appea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>red by buildines found so deepe.</label> neere unto
<lb/><ref target="LIME2.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi></ref> corner: for the placing of the
<lb/>which Pumpe, having broken up the
<lb/>ground, they were forced to digge more
<lb/>than two fadome deepe, before they
<lb/>came to any maine ground, where they
<lb/>found a Harth made of <hi>Britaine</hi>, or ra<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther <hi>Roman</hi> Tile, every Tile halfe yard
<lb/>square, and about two inches thicke:
<lb/>they found Coale lying there also (for
<lb/>that lying whole will never consume)
<lb/>then digging one fadome in the maine,
<lb/>they found water sufficient, made their
<lb/>prall, and set up the Pumpe, which
<lb/>Pumpe, with oft repairing and great
<lb/>charges to the parish, continued not 24.
<lb/>yeeres, but being rotted, was taken up,
<lb/>and a new set in the place, in the yeere
<lb/><date when-custom="1600" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1600</date>. Thus much for the high street.</p>
                  <p>In <ref target="STMA7.xml">Saint <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref> had yee (of old
<lb/>time) a <ref target="STMA41.xml">parish Church of Saint <hi>Mary</hi>
   <lb/>the Virgin</ref>,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right"><ref target="STMA7.xml">St. <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref> <ref target="STMA41.xml">Pa<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rish Church of <hi>Mary</hi>, St. <hi>Vrsula</hi>, and 11000. Virgins</ref>, called at the Axe, letten out of a ware<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>house.</label> St. <hi>Vrsula</hi>, and the 11000.
<lb/>Virgins, which Church was common<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ly called <ref target="STMA41.xml">Saint <hi>Mary</hi> at the Axe</ref>, of the
<lb/>signe of an Axe, over against the East
<lb/>end thereof, or <ref target="STMA41.xml">Saint <hi>Mary Pellipar</hi></ref>, of
<lb/>a plot of ground lying on the North side
<lb/>thereof, pertaining to the Skinners in
<lb/><ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>. This parish about the yeere,
<lb/><date when-custom="1565" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1565</date>. was united to the <ref target="STAN8.xml">parish Church
<lb/>of Saint <hi>Andrew Vndershaft</hi></ref>, and so was
<lb/><ref target="STMA41.xml">Saint <hi>Mary</hi> at the Axe</ref> suppressed, and
<lb/>letten out to be a warehouse for a Mer<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chant. Against the East end of this
<lb/>Church, was sometime a faire wall, now
<lb/>turned to a pumpe. Also against the
<lb/>North end of this <ref target="STMA7.xml">St. <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, was
<lb/>sometime one other parish <ref target="STAU2.xml">Church of
<lb/>Saint <hi>Augustine</hi></ref>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right"><ref target="STAU2.xml">Parish Church of S. <hi>Augu<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>stine</hi></ref>
                        in the wall, made a Chappel to the <hi>Pa<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pey</hi>, and since pul<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>led downe
                        and made a stable.</label> called <ref target="STAU2.xml">Saint <hi>Augustine</hi>
<lb/>in the wall</ref>, for that it stood adjoyning
<lb/>to the <ref target="WALL2.xml">wall of the City</ref>, and otherwise
<lb/>called <ref target="STAU2.xml">Saint <hi>Augustines Papey</hi></ref>, or the
<lb/>Poore, as I have read in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA3" calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal">reigne of
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA3"><hi>Edward</hi> the 3</name></date>. About the yeere, <date when-custom="1430" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1430</date>.
                     <lb/>in the <date when-custom="r_HENR2" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">reigne of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR2"><hi>Henry</hi> the sixt</name></date>, the same
<lb/>Church was allowed to the brethren of
<lb/>the <name ref="ORGS1.xml#PAPE1" type="org">Papey</name>, the house of poore Priests,
<lb/>wherof I have spoken in <ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi> Ward</ref>.
<lb/>The Parishioners of this Church were
<lb/>appointed to the <ref target="ALLH1.xml">Parish Church of <hi>Al<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>hallowes</hi> in the
   wall</ref>, which is in <ref target="BROA3.xml"><hi>Broad<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>street</hi> Ward</ref>: and this brotherhood 
                     cal<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>led <name ref="ORGS1.xml#PAPE1" type="org">Papey</name>, being suppressed, the <ref target="STAU2.xml">Church
<lb/>of Saint <hi>Augustine</hi></ref> was pulled downe,
<lb/>and in place thereof one <hi>Grey</hi>, Apothe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cary, builded a Stable, a Hay-loft, &amp;c.
<lb/>It is now a dwelling house. Those two
<lb/>Parish Churches, both lying in the
<lb/><ref target="LIME1.xml">Ward of <hi>Limestreet</hi></ref>, being thus suppres<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sed, there is not any one parish Church
<lb/>or place for Divine Service in that
<lb/>Ward, but the inhabitants thereof re<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>paire to <ref target="STPE3.xml">Saint <hi>Peter</hi></ref> in <ref target="CORN1.xml"><hi>Corne-hill</hi> Ward</ref>,
<lb/><ref target="STAN8.xml">Saint <hi>Andrew</hi></ref> in <ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi> Ward</ref>, <ref target="ALLH1.xml"><hi>Al<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>hallowes</hi> in the wall</ref>, in <ref target="BROA3.xml"><hi>Broadstreet</hi> Ward</ref>,

                  <p>Now because of late there hath been
<lb/>some question, to what Ward this
<lb/><ref target="STAU2.xml">Church of S. <hi>Augustine Papey</hi></ref> should
<lb/>of right belong; for the same hath been
<lb/>challenged by them of <ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi> Ward</ref>,
<lb/>and (without reason) taken into <ref target="BISH1.xml"><hi>Bishops<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gate</hi> Ward</ref>, from <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> VVard</ref>, I
<lb/>am somewhat to touch it.</p>
      <p>About thirty yeeres since,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Houses by <ref target="WALL2.xml"><hi>London</hi> wall</ref> in the <ref target="LIME1.xml">ward of <hi>Limestreet</hi></ref>.
                     </label> the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#CHAM12">Cham<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ber of <hi>London</hi></name> granted a Lease of ground
<lb/>(in these words) <hi>Lying neere</hi> <ref target="WALL2.xml">London
<lb/><hi>Wall</hi></ref><hi>, in the</hi> <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Ward of</hi> Limestreet</ref>, <hi>from the
<lb/>West of the said Church or Chappell of</hi> <ref target="STAU2.xml"><hi>Saint</hi>
<lb/>Augustine Papey</ref>, <hi>towards</hi> <ref target="BISH2.xml">Bishopsgate</ref>,
<lb/><hi>&amp;c</hi>. On the which plot of ground, the
<lb/>Leasee builded three faire tenements,
<lb/>and placed Tenants there: these were
<lb/>charged to beare scot and lot, and some<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>of them to beare office in <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi>
<lb/>VVard</ref>: all which they did willingly
<lb/>without grudging. And when any sus<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pected or disordered persons were by
<lb/>the Landlord placed there, the Officers
<lb/>of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> VVard</ref> fetched them out
<lb/>of their houses, committed them to
<lb/>ward, procured their due punishments,
<lb/>and banished them from thence: wher<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>by in short time that place was refor<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>med, and brought into good order:
<lb/>which thing being noted by them of
<lb/><ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi> VVard</ref>, they moved their Al<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>derman, <name ref="PERS1.xml#OFFL2">Sir <hi>Thomas Offley</hi></name>, to call in
<lb/>those houses to be of his VVard. But I
<lb/>my selfe shewing a faire Ledgier booke,
<lb/>sometime pertaining to the late dissol<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ved <ref target="HOLY1.xml">Priory of the holy Trinity within
<lb/><hi>Ealdgate</hi></ref>, wherein were set downe the
<lb/>just bounds of <ref target="ALDG2.xml"><hi>Ealdgate</hi> VVard</ref>, before
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#OFFL2">Sir <hi>Thomas Offley</hi></name>, <name ref="PERS1.xml#HEYW5">Sir <hi>Rowland Hayward</hi></name>,
<lb/>the Common Counsell, and VVard.
<lb/>mote Inquest of the said <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi>
<lb/>VVard</ref>; <name ref="PERS1.xml#OFFL2">Sir <hi>Thomas Offley</hi></name> gave over
<lb/>his challenge, and so that matter rested
<lb/>in good quiet, untill the yeere <date when-custom="1579" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1579</date>.
<lb/>that <name ref="PERS1.xml#PYPE1">Sir <hi>Richard Pype</hi></name> (being Maior, and
<lb/>Alderman of <ref target="BISH1.xml"><hi>Bishopsgate</hi> VVard</ref>) chal<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>lenged those houses to be of his ward,
         <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">A part of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> ward</ref> un<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>justly
                        withheld by <ref target="BISH1.xml"><hi>Bishops<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gate</hi> ward</ref>.</label>
<lb/>whereunto (without reason shewed)
<lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#HEYW5">Sir <hi>Rowland Hayward</hi></name> yeelded: and thus
<lb/>is that side of the street, from the North
<lb/>corner of <ref target="STMA7.xml">S. <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, almost to <ref target="BISH2.xml"><hi>Bi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>shopsgate</hi></ref>, (wherein is one plot of ground,
<lb/>letten by the Chamberlaine of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>,
<lb/>to the parish of <ref target="STMA21.xml">S. <hi>Martins Oteswich</hi></ref>, to
<lb/>be a Churchyard or burying-place for
<lb/>the dead of that Parish, &amp;c.) unjustly
<lb/>drawne and with-holden from the
<lb/><ref target="LIME1.xml">ward of <hi>Limestret</hi></ref>.
                  </p>
                  <p>Dives other proofes I could set
<lb/>downe, but this one following may suf<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>fice. The Maior and <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#ALDE7">Aldermen of <hi>Lon<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>don</hi></name> made a grant to the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#PAPE1">Fraternity of
<lb/>the <hi>Papey</hi></name>, in these words:</p>
                  <p>Be it remembred, that where now of late
<lb/>the Master and Wardens of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#PAPE1">Fraternity of
<lb/>the <hi>Papey</hi></name>, have made a bricke wall, clo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sing in the <ref target="STAU2.xml">Chappell of S. <hi>Augustine</hi></ref>, called
<lb/><ref target="STAU2.xml"><hi>Papey</hi> Chappell</ref>, situate in the <ref target="ALLH101.xml">Parish of
<lb/><hi>All Saints</hi> in the Wall</ref>, in the <ref target="LIME1.xml">Ward of
<lb/><hi>Limestreet</hi></ref> of the City of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>: from
<lb/>the South-east corner of the bricke wall, is a
<lb/>Scutcheon of 12. foot of assize from the said
<lb/>corner Eastward: And from the said Scut<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cheon there, to a Messuage of 55. foot and
<lb/>an halfe Westward: the said Scutcheon brea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>keth out of line right Southward, betwixt
<lb/>the measures aforesaid, three foot and five
<lb/>inches of assise, upon the common ground of
<lb/>the Citie aforesaid: <name ref="PERS1.xml#VERN1"><hi>Ralph Verney</hi></name>, Mai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>or, and the Aldermen of the same Citie,

<lb/>M. <name ref="PERS1.xml#BOLT1"><hi>John Bolt</hi></name>, and <name ref="PERS1.xml#PACH1"><hi>Tho. Patchet</hi></name>, Priests,
<lb/>wardens of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#PAPE1">Fraterniey of <hi>Papey</hi></name> afore<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>said, and to their successors for ever, &amp;c.

                  </p>
                  <p>On the South side of this street, stret<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ching west from <ref target="STMA7.xml">Saint <hi>Mary</hi> street</ref>, to<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>wards <ref target="BISH3.xml"><hi>Bishopsgate</hi> street</ref>, there was (of
<lb/>old time) one large Messuage builded
<lb/>of stone and timber, in the <ref target="STAU2.xml">parish of S.
<lb/><hi>Augustine</hi></ref> in the wall, now in the <ref target="ALLH101.xml">parish
<lb/>of <hi>Alhallowes</hi></ref> in the same wall, belon<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ging to the Earle of <hi>Oxford</hi>;
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Patent. <hi>Oxford</hi> Place.</label> (for <name ref="PERS1.xml#VERE2"><hi>Rich.
<lb/>de Vere</hi>, Earle of <hi>Oxford</hi></name>, possessed it in
<lb/>the <date when-custom="r_HENR8_04" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">4. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR8"><hi>Henry</hi> the 5</name></date>.) but in processe of
<lb/>time, the Lands of the Earle fell to Fe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>males; amongst the which, one being
<lb/>married to <name ref="PERS1.xml#WING4"><hi>Wingfield</hi> of <hi>Suffolke</hi></name>, this
<lb/>house with the appurtenances, fell to
<lb/>his lot, and was by his heire, <name ref="PERS1.xml#WING2">Sir <hi>Robert
<lb/>Wingfield</hi></name>, sold to Mr. <name ref="PERS1.xml#COOK3"><hi>Edward Cooke</hi></name>, at
<lb/>the time when this was written, the
<lb/>Queenes Attourney Generall. This
<lb/>house being greatly ruinated, of late
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">time,</fw>

<lb/>new builded into a number of small te<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>nements, letten out to strangers, and o<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther meane people.</p>
                  <p>It was ordered by the Lord Maior
                     <lb/>and Aldermen,<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Hum. Dyson</label> at a Court holden on
<lb/><date when-custom="1550-04-24" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">Thursday, the 24. of April</date>, in the <date when-custom="r_EDWA4_04" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">4.
<lb/>yeere of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA4"><hi>Edward</hi> the 6</name></date>. That the Cham<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>berlaine of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref> should yeerely pay
<lb/>unto the Scavenger of <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> ward</ref>,
<lb/>twenty shillings by even portions, out
<lb/>of the profit comming by the Butchers
<lb/>stalles in <ref target="LEAD1.xml"><hi>Leaden-hall</hi></ref>, toward the cle<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sing and sweet keeping of the same
<lb/>Ward.</p>
                  <p>One note more of this Ward, and so
<lb/>an end: I finde of record, that in the
<lb/>yeere <date when-custom="1371" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1371</date>. the <date when-custom="r_EDWA3_45" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">45. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA3"><hi>Edward</hi> the 3</name></date>. a
<lb/>great Subsidie of 100000. pounds was
<lb/>granted towards the Kings warres in
<lb/><hi>France</hi>, whereof the Cleargie payed
<lb/>50000. pounds, and the Laitie 50000.
<lb/>pounds, to bee levied in 39. shires of
<lb/><ref target="ENGL2.xml"><hi>England</hi></ref>, containing Parishes 8600. of
<lb/>every parish, 5. <abbr>l.</abbr> 16. <hi>s</hi>. the greater to
<lb/>helpe the lesser. This Citie (as one of
<lb/>the Shires) then containing 24. wards,
                     <lb/>and in them 110.<label rendition="#stow_1633_LIME1_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Subsidy of parishes, <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Limestreet</hi> ward</ref>, in the yeere <date when-custom="1371" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1371</date>.</label> was therfore
<lb/>assessed to 635. <abbr>l.</abbr> 12. <hi>s</hi>. whereof <ref target="LIME1.xml"><hi>Lime<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>street</hi> Ward</ref> did beare 34. <hi>s</hi>. and no
<lb/>more; so small a Ward it was, and so
<lb/>accounted, as having no one whole pa<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rish therein, but small portions onely,
<lb/>of two parishes in that Ward.</p>
