            <p>This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> copy (<idno type="call">DA680 S87 1633</idno>) of
               <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in
               <ref target="http://contentdm.library.uvic.ca/cdm/compoundobject/collection/collection25/id/993">UVic ContentDM</ref> (Collection 25, <idno>993</idno>).
               For convenience, and only because <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription
               of the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> <idno type="STC">STC 23345.5</idno>/<idno type="Wing">Wing S5773A</idno>
               (<idno type="TCP">TCP A13053</idno>), available on <ref target="https://github.com/textcreationpartnership/A13053">GitHub</ref>). The names of the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers are unknown. <name ref="PERS1.xml#SCHA2">Paul Schaffner</name> edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before <date notAfter="2012">2012</date>.
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#RAHT1">Sebastian Rahtz</name> created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name>
               downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. <name ref="PERS1.xml#TAKE1">Joey Takeda</name> and <name ref="PERS1.xml#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name> processed the file programmatically
               to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on
               predictable patterns. <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#TEAM1">MoEML Research Assistants</name> at the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> performed the
               following additional tasks: transcribed the <date when-custom="1633" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1633</date> text from the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy
               in those places where the <date notBefore-custom="1640" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">post-1640</date> text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic
               catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor
               <name ref="PERS1.xml#JENS1">Janelle Jenstad</name>.</p>

<lb/>the North side thereof,
                     <lb/>is <ref target="COLE2.xml"><hi>Coleman street</hi> Ward</ref>,
<lb/>and beginneth also in
<lb/>the East, on the course
                     <lb/>of <ref target="WALB3.xml"><hi>Walbrooke</hi></ref>, in <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Loth<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bury</hi></ref>, and runneth West, (on the South
                     <lb/>side) to the end of <ref target="IRON1.xml"><hi>Ironmongers lane</hi></ref>, and
<lb/>on the North side, to the West corner
                     <lb/>of <ref target="BASI2.xml"><hi>Basings Hall street</hi></ref>. On the South side
                     <lb/>of <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Lothbury</hi></ref>, is the street called the <ref target="OLDJ1.xml"><hi>Old
<lb/>Iewrie</hi></ref>, the one halfe, and better, on
<lb/>both sides towards <ref target="CHEA1.xml"><hi>Cheape</hi></ref>, is of this
<lb/>Ward.</p>
                  <p>On the North side lyeth <ref target="COLE1.xml"><hi>Coleman street</hi></ref>,
                     <lb/>whereof the Ward taketh name, whol<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ly on both sides North to <ref target="LOND3.xml"><hi>London</hi> wall</ref>,
<lb/>and from that North end along by the
                     <lb/>Wall, and <ref target="MOOR2.xml"><hi>Mooregate</hi></ref>, East, to the course
                     <lb/>of <ref target="WALB3.xml"><hi>Walbrooke</hi></ref>. And againe, from <ref target="COLE1.xml"><hi>Coleman
<lb/>street</hi></ref>, West, to the Iron grates: and
<lb/>these be the bounds of this Ward.</p>
                  <p>Antiquities therein to be noted, are
                     <lb/>these:<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_lmlabel #stow_1633_COLE2_IR" place="margin-left"><ref target="LOTH1.xml">Lothbery</ref>.</label> First, the street of <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Lothbery</hi></ref>, <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Lath<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bery</hi></ref>, or <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Loadbery</hi></ref>, (for by all these names
<lb/>have I read it) tooke the name (as it see<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>meth) of a <hi>Bery</hi>, or Court of old time
<lb/>there kept, but by whom, it is growne
<lb/>out of memorie. This street is possessed
                     <lb/>(for the most part) by <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#FOUN2">Founders</name>, that
<lb/>cast Candlestickes, Chafingdishes,
<lb/>Spice Morters, and such like Copper or
<lb/>Laten works, and doe afterward turne
<lb/>them with the foot, and not with the
<lb/>wheele, to make them smooth and
<lb/>bright, with turning and scratting, (as
<lb/>some doe terme it) making a lothsome
<lb/>noise to the by-passers, that have not
<lb/>beene used to the like; and therefore by
<lb/>them disdainedly called <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Lothburie</hi></ref>. On
<lb/>the South side of this street, amongst
                     <lb/>the <name type="org" ref="ORGS1.xml#FOUN2">Founders</name>, be some faire houses and
<lb/>large, for Merchants; namely, one that
                     <lb/>of old time was the <seg xml:id="stow_1633_COLE2_SA_1_jewssynagogue" type="researchNeeded">Iewes Synagogue<note type="helpRequested">MoEML is still seeking information regarding this entry. If you have information to contribute, please email the MoEML team.</note></seg>,
<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_rmlabel" place="margin-right">The <hi>Iewes</hi> Synagogue.</label> which was defaced by the Citizens of
<lb/><ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, after that they had slaine 700.
<lb/>Iewes, and spoiled the residue of their
                     <lb/>goods, in the yeere <date calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1262">1262</date>. the <date when-custom="r_HENR7_43" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">47. of <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7"><hi>H</hi>.

                  <p>The said Synagogue being so sup<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>pressed, certaine Friers got possession
<lb/>thereof: For in the yeere <date when-custom="1257" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1257</date>. (saith

<lb/>for feare of inchantments: for breaking
<lb/>of which commandement, many Iewes
<lb/>were slaine, who being assembled, to
<lb/>present the King with some gift, one of
<lb/>them was stricken by a Christian, which
<lb/>some unruly people perceiving, fell up<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>on them, beat them to their houses, and
<lb/>brent them therein, or slew them at
<lb/>their comming out.</p>
                  <p>Also the Iewes at <hi>Norwich, S. Ed<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>mondsbury, Lincolne, Stanford</hi>, and <hi>Lyn</hi>,
<lb/>were robbed and spoiled; and at <hi>Yorke</hi>,
<lb/>to the number of 500. besides Women
<lb/>and children, entred a Tower of the Ca<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>stle, proffered money to be in surety of
<lb/>their lives, but the Christians would
<lb/>not take it: whereupon they cut the
<lb/>throats of their owne wives and chil<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dren, and cast them over the walles on

                  <p>This <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7">King <hi>Henry</hi></name> founded a Church
<lb/>and house for converted Iewes,<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
   <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7"><hi>Hen</hi>. the 3</name>. founded an house for con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>verted Iewes.</label> in a new
<lb/>street by the Temple, whereby it came
<lb/>to passe, that (in short time) there
<lb/>was gathered a great number of Con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>verts.</p>
      <p>The <date when-custom="r_HENR7" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">20. of this <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7">King <hi>Henry</hi></name></date>, seven
<lb/>Iewes were brought from <hi>Norwich</hi>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_lmlabel" place="margin-left">Iews stale a child and circū<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cised him, and min<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ded to have cru<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cified him.</label>
<lb/>which had stolne a Christned child, had
<lb/>circumcised, and minded to have cruci<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>fied him at Easter, wherefore their bo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dies and goods were at the Kings plea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>sure. The 26. the Iewes were constrai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ned to pay to the King 20000. Markes,
<lb/>at two termes in the yeere, or else to be
<lb/>kept in perpetuall prison.</p>
                  <p>The 35. he taketh inestimable sums
<lb/>of money of all rich men;<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_lmlabel" place="margin-left">
                        <name ref="PERS1.xml#HENR7"><hi>Hen. 3</hi></name>. ex<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>acteth money of the Iewes.</label> namely, of <hi>A<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>aron</hi>, a Iew borne at <hi>Yorke, 14000</hi>. marks
<lb/>for himselfe, and tenne thousand marks
<lb/>for the Queene, and before, he had ta<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ken of the same Iew as much, as in all a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>mounted to 30000. markes of silver,
<lb/>and two hundred markes of gold to the
<lb/>Queene.</p>
                  <p>In the 40. yeere were brought up to
<lb/><ref target="WEST1.xml"><hi>Westminster</hi></ref> 202. Iewes from <hi>Lincolne</hi>,
                     <label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Iewes han<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ged for crucifying of a child.</label>
<lb/>for crucifying a child, named <name ref="PERS1.xml#HUGH5"><hi>Hugh</hi></name>, 18.
<lb/>of them were hanged.</p>
                  <p>The 43. a Iew at <hi>Tewkesburie</hi> fell into
<lb/>a Privie on the Saturday, and would
<lb/>not that day be taken out, for reverence
<lb/>of his Sabbath; wherfore <name ref="PERS1.xml#CLAR25"><hi>Richard Clare</hi></name>,
<lb/>Earle of <hi>Glocester</hi>, kept him there till
<lb/>Munday, that he was dead.</p>
                  <p>The 47. the Barons slew of the Iewes
<lb/>at <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>,

<lb/>weare a Table on his brest, the breath
<lb/>of a paveline, or else to avoid the Realm.</p>
                  <p>The <date when-custom="r_EDWA1_06" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" calendar="includes.xml#regnal">sixth of the said <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA1">King <hi>Edward</hi></name></date>,
<lb/>a reformation was made for clipping of
<lb/>the Kings Coyne; for which offence,

<lb/>to destroy all the Iewes Synagogues in
<lb/>his Dioces.</p>

<lb/>Iewes in <ref target="ENGL2.xml"><hi>England</hi></ref>, were (in one day) ap<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>prehended by precept from the King,
<lb/>but they redeemed themselves for 12.
<lb/>thousand pounds of silver; notwithstan<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ding in the <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal" when-custom="r_EDWA1_19">19. of his reigne</date> he banished
<lb/>them all out of <ref target="ENGL2.xml"><hi>England</hi></ref>, giving them
<lb/>onely to beare their charge till they
<lb/>were out of his Realme: the number of

<lb/>from thence West to the North end of

<lb/>time, the outward stone wall hath been

                     <p>Now for the North side of this <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Loth<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>burie</hi></ref>, beginning againe at the East end
<lb/>thereof: Vpon the Water-course of

                           <lb/>Church, called S. <hi>Margaret</hi></ref>, which see<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>meth to be newly re-edified and buil<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ded, about the yeere <date when-custom="1440" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1440</date>. For <name ref="PERS1.xml#LARG1"><hi>Robert
<lb/>Large</hi></name> gave to the Quire of that Church
<lb/>one hundred shillings, and 20. pounds

                     <p>There be Monuments in this Church,

                        <lb/>first builder or owner of <ref target="COLE1.xml"><hi>Coleman street</hi></ref>,
                        <lb/>and that <ref target="STST2.xml">Saint <hi>Stephens</hi> Church</ref>, then
                        <lb/>builded in <ref target="COLE1.xml"><hi>Coleman street</hi></ref>, was but a

<lb/>name and fame fifty eight yeeres, and ve<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ry blessedly departed this transitory life,
<lb/>the <date datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1603-12-17">seventeenth day of <hi>Decemb. 1603</hi></date>.
                           <lb/>Leaving two sonnes, <hi>(viz.) <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV6">Thomas</name></hi>
                           <lb/>and <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV7"><hi>William</hi></name>; and five daughters, <hi>viz.
                              <lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV8">Anne</name></hi>, married to <name ref="PERS1.xml#ROBE17"><hi>Barne Roberts</hi></name>, of
                           <lb/><hi>Willesden</hi>, in the County of <hi>Mid<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dlesex</hi>, Esquire; <hi><name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV9">Susan</name>, <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV10">Elizabeth</name>,
   <lb/><name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV11">Mary</name></hi>, and <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV12"><hi>Alice</hi></name>, behinde him, to con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dole the want of so kinde and loving a
<lb/>Father.</p>
                        <p>To whose dearest Memorie, the La<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dy <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV8"><hi>Anne Glover</hi></name>, the most sorrow<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>full Widdow of the said <name ref="PERS1.xml#GLOV5">Sir <hi>Willi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>am</hi></name>, lamenting his death, and her

<lb/>one daughter, named <name ref="PERS1.xml#EWEB1"><hi>Elizabeth</hi></name>. Shee
<lb/>secondly married <name ref="PERS1.xml#SMIT46">Sir <hi>Richard Smith</hi></name>,
<lb/>Knight, son of <name ref="PERS1.xml#SMIT47"><hi>Thomas Smith</hi></name>, of <hi>Oe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>stenhanger</hi>, in the County of <hi>Kent</hi>, E<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>squire, and had issue by him but one
<lb/>daughter, named <name ref="PERS1.xml#SMIT48"><hi>Mary</hi></name>. The said <name ref="PERS1.xml#SMIT45">Dame
<lb/><hi>Iane</hi></name> died the <date when-custom="1607-10-13" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">13. of October, 1607</date>. be<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ing about the age of 33. yeeres. In whose
<lb/>remembrance, her said husband caused

                        <p><name ref="PERS1.xml#DANE4">Mistresse <hi>Dane</hi></name>, widow, gave to the poore
<lb/>10. <hi>s. per annum</hi> for ever, from the
<lb/><name ref="ORGS1.xml#IRON3" type="org">Company of Ironmongers</name>, <date datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1614">1614</date>.</p>

<lb/>the poore of this Parish for ever, <date datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1616">1616</date>.</p>

                           <name ref="PERS1.xml#AYER1"><hi>Christopher Ayer</hi></name>, Merchant, Citizen,
<lb/>and Lether-seller of <ref target="LOND5.xml"><hi>London</hi></ref>, gave 240.
<lb/>pounds for the building of sixe Almes<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>houses, and 400. pounds to purchase
<lb/>lands towards the maintenance of sixe
<lb/>poore couple of this parish for ever, <date datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1624">1624</date>.</p>
                        <p><name ref="PERS1.xml#SMIT46">Sir <hi>Richard Smith</hi></name>, Knight, gave in stock
<lb/>for provision of Sea-coales for the poore
<lb/>of this Parish, one hundred pounds every
<lb/>yeere to bee returned for the use of the
<lb/>poore for ever, <date when-custom="1627" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1627</date>. And another hun<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dred pounds afterward for reliefe of the
<lb/>poore also.</p>
                        <p>I obtained these instructions, by the
<lb/>helpe and assistance of my loving
<lb/>friend and brother, <name ref="PERS1.xml#PRIC5"><hi>Thomas Price</hi></name>, Pa<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rish Clarke there.</p>

                     <p>This Church was sometime a Syna<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gogue of the Iewes,<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_rmlabel" place="margin-right"><ref target="STST2.xml">Parish Church of S. <hi>Stephen</hi></ref>, sometime a Syna<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gogue of the Iewes.</label> then a Parish
                        <lb/>Church, then a Chappell to <ref target="STOL3.xml">St. <hi>Olaves</hi>
<lb/>in the <hi>Iewry</hi></ref>, untill the <date when-custom="r_EDWA6_07" calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#regnal">seventh of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA6"><hi>Ed<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ward</hi> the fourth</name></date>, and was then incorpo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rated a Parish Church.</p>
                     <p>By the East end of this Church is pla<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ced a Cocke of sweet water,<label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Cocke of water by <ref target="STST2.xml">St. <hi>Stephens</hi> Church</ref>.</label> taken out
<lb/>of the maine Pipe that goeth into <ref target="LOTH1.xml"><hi>Loth<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>bery</hi></ref>. Also, in <ref target="LOND3.xml"><hi>London Wall</hi></ref>,
                        <label rendition="#stow_1633_COLE2_rmlabel" place="margin-right">Conduit at <ref target="LOND3.xml"><hi>London Wall</hi></ref>.
                        </label> directly a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gainst the North end of <ref target="COLE1.xml"><hi>Coleman streete</hi></ref>,
<lb/>is a Conduit of water, made at the char<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ges of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EXME1"><hi>Thomas Exmew</hi></name>, Goldsmith, Mai<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>or, <date calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1517">1517</date>.</p>
                     <p>And let here be the end of this Ward,
<lb/>which hath an Alderman, his Deputy,
<lb/>common Counsellors foure, Constables
<lb/>foure, Scavengers foure, of the Ward<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>mote Inquest thirteene, and a Beadle. It
<lb/>is taxed to the Fifteene, fifteene pound,
<lb/>sixteene shillings, nine pence.</p>
