               <ref target="THRO1.xml">Throgmorton Street</ref> was in <ref target="BROA3.xml">Broad Street Ward</ref> and ran east-west from <ref target="BROA2.xml">Broad Street</ref> to <ref target="LOTH1.xml">Lothbury</ref> and <ref target="BART1.xml">Bartholomew Lane</ref>. <ref target="THRO1.xml">Throgmorton Street</ref> appears unlabelled on the Agas map running west
                    from <ref target="BROA2.xml">Broad Street</ref>, under the <ref target="DRAP2.xml">Drapers’ Hall</ref>. <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name>’s
                    description of <ref target="THRO1.xml">Throgmorton Street</ref> is somewhat more
                    detailed than that of other streets because he had a personal connection to it:

                <p><name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name>’s <title level="m">Survey</title> is the first written source to
                    record the street as <ref target="THRO1.xml">Throgmorton Street</ref>. The name,
                    of Tudor origin, honours <name ref="PERS1.xml#THRO2">Sir Nicholas Throgmorton</name> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben</ref>). Before this time it was known as <ref target="BROA2.xml">Broad Street</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben</ref>). <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name> refers to the street as a place where <quote>many fayre
                    houses are builded</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). His
                    description of <ref target="THRO1.xml">Throgmorton Street</ref> is somewhat more
                    detailed than that of other streets because he had a personal connection to it:
                    his father owned land there. For example, he tells of the unlawful acts of <name ref="PERS1.xml#CROM1">Sir Thomas Cromwell</name>, who had a house
                    built in the street and commanded his surveyors to build over garden plots owned
                    by others. <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name> adds, with a slight touch of bitterness, that his father lost
                    twenty-two feet of his land but still paid the full rent of six shillings and
                    eight pence a year (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name>’s
                    father had no warning of the encroachment and received no explanation for the
                    act. <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name> uses the episode as a good example of how <quote>the suddaine rising of some
                    men, causeth them to forget themselues</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>).</p>
