      <p><ref target="NEWF1.xml">New Fish Street</ref> (also known in the <date calendar="includes.xml#julianSic" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" notBefore-custom="1600" notAfter-custom="1700">seventeenth century</date> as <ref target="NEWF1.xml">Bridge Street</ref>) ran north-south from <ref target="LOND1.xml">London Bridge</ref> at the south to the intersection of <ref target="EAST2.xml">Eastcheap</ref>, <ref target="GRAC1.xml">Gracechurch Street</ref>, and <ref target="LITT4.xml">Little Eastcheap</ref> in the north (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben 432</ref>; <ref target="https://www.british-history.ac.uk/no-series/dictionary-of-london/bridewell-bridge-bridgewater-house#p33">BHO</ref>). At the time, it was the main thoroughfare to <ref target="LOND1.xml">London Bridge</ref> (<ref target="BIBL1.xml#SUGD1" type="bibl">Sugden 191</ref>). It ran on the boundary between <ref target="BRID3.xml">Bridge Within Ward</ref> on the west and <ref target="BILL2.xml">Billingsgate Ward</ref> on the east. It is labelled on the Agas map as <quote><ref target="NEWF1.xml">New Fyſhe ſtreate</ref></quote>. Variant spellings include <quote><ref target="NEWF1.xml">Street of London Bridge</ref></quote>, <quote><ref target="NEWF1.xml">Brigestret</ref></quote>, <quote><ref target="NEWF1.xml">Brugestret</ref></quote>, and <quote><ref target="NEWF1.xml">Newfishstrete</ref></quote>  (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben 432</ref>; <ref target="https://www.british-history.ac.uk/no-series/dictionary-of-london/bridewell-bridge-bridgewater-house#p33">BHO</ref>). </p>

             <p> Diarist <name ref="PERS1.xml#PEPY1">Samuel Pepys</name> records that he heard of the fire <quote>burning down all <ref target="NEWF1.xml">Fish Street</ref></quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#PEPY4">Pepys</ref> <ref target="https://www.pepysdiary.com/diary/1666/09/02/">02 September 1666</ref>). Although damaged in the fire, <ref target="NEWF1.xml">New Fish Street</ref> still exists in modern <ref target="LOND5.xml">London</ref> (now known as <quote>Fish Street Hill</quote>). It has been greatly shortened, now running between Thames Street and Monument Street, where at this junction sits the Monument to the Great Fire of <ref target="LOND5.xml">London</ref> (also known as <quote>The Monument</quote>).</p>
