Part of it was removed for the expansion of the <ref target="ROYA1.xml">Royal Exchange</ref> in <date when-custom="1566" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" calendar="includes.xml#julianSic">1566</date>, and is mentioned by <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name> as being named for the <ref target="CAST17.xml">Castle Tavern</ref> sign.</p></abstract>

It is unmarked on the Agas map, but is said to have an alley passing through it, also named for the tavern sign (<ref target="CAST12.xml">Castle Alley</ref>).</p>
                       <p> <name ref="PERS1.xml#STOW6">Stow</name> says that despite rumours of the site having once been a small church or a Jewish dwelling, the <ref target="CAST6.xml">Castle</ref> was likely to have been built in the <date calendar="includes.xml#regnal" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic" when-custom="1189">first year of <name ref="PERS1.xml#RICH2">King Richard I</name></date>, when it was decreed that only stone houses could be constructed within <ref target="LOND5.xml">London</ref> in a preventative measure against fires (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow 151</ref>).</p>
                        
                        <p>The site has since been removed for further expansion of the <ref target="ROYA1.xml">Royal Exchange</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben 127</ref>).</p>
