This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the University of Victoria copy (DA680 S87 1633) of STC 23345 (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in UVic ContentDM (Collection 25, 993). For convenience, and only because STC 23345 has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription of the post-1640 STC 23345.5/Wing S5773A (TCP A13053), available on GitHub). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. Paul Schaffner edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before 2012. Sebastian Rahtz created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. Martin Holmes downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. Joey Takeda and Martin Holmes processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable patterns. MoEML Research Assistants at the University of Victoria performed the following additional tasks: transcribed the 1633 text from the UVic copy in those places where the post-1640 text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the UVic copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. (LOND5.xml) St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral was—and remains—an important church in London. In 962, while London was occupied by the Danes, St. Paul’s monastery was burnt and raised anew. The church survived the Norman conquest of 1066, but in 1087 it was burnt again. An ambitious Bishop named Maurice took the opportunity to build a new St. Paul’s, even petitioning the king to offer a piece of land belonging to one of his castles (Times 115). The building Maurice initiated would become the cathedral of St. Paul’s which survived until the Great Fire of London.

(STPA2.xml) Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey was and continues to be a historically significant church. One of its many notable features is Poets’ Corner. Located in the south transept of the church, it is the final resting place of Geoffrey Chaucer, Ben Jonson, Francis Beaumont, and many other notable authors; in 1740, a monument for William Shakespeare was erected in Westminster Abbey (ShaLT). The church is located on the bottom-left corner of the Agas map.

St. Saviour (Southwark) dates back at least to 1106. It was originally known by the name St. Mary Overies, with Overies referring to its being over the Thames, that is, on its southern bank. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the church was rededicated and renamed St. Saviour (Sugden 335). St. Saviour (Southwark) is visible on the Agas map along New Rents street in Southwark. It is marked with the label S. Mary Owber.

(STSA1.xml) St. John’s of Jerusalem

St. John’s of Jerusalem provided housing and care for pilgrims and crusading knights. It was held by the Knights Hospitallers and dissolved in the reign of Henry VIII (Stow 1598, sig. 2D7r).

(STJO3.xml) Smithfield

Smithfield was an open, grassy area located outside the Wall. Because of its location close to the city centre, Smithfield was used as a site for markets, tournaments, and public executions. From 1123 to 1855, the Bartholomew’s Fair took place at Smithfield (Weinreb, Hibbert, Keay, and Keay 842).

(SMIT1.xml) St. Bartolomew’s Priory

A priory of Augustinian canons once encompassing St. Bartholomew the Great, St. Bartholomew the Less, and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Dissolved by Henry VIII.

(STBA5.xml) Holy Trinity Priory

Holy Trinity Priory, located west of Aldgate and north of Leadenhall Street, was an Augustinian Priory. Stow notes that Queen Matilda established the Priory in 1108 in the parishes of Saint Marie Magdalen, S. Michael, S. Katherine, and the blessed Trinitie, which now was made but one Parish of the holy Trinitie (Stow). Before Matilda united these parishes under the name Holy Trinity Priory, they were collectively known as the Holy Cross or Holy Roode parish (Stow; Harben).

(HOLY1.xml) Aldgate

Aldgate was the easternmost gate into the walled city. The name Aldgate is thought to come from one of four sources: Æst geat meaning Eastern gate (Ekwall 36), Alegate from the Old English ealu meaning ale, Aelgate from the Saxon meaning public gate or open to all, or Aeldgate meaning old gate (Bebbington 20–21).

(ALDG1.xml) St. Mary Rounceval’s Hospital

According to Stow, St. Mary Rounceval’s Hospital was founded in the fifteenth year of Edward IV’s reign near Charing Cross. It was suppressed first under Henry V and then finally under Edward VI, after which the site was converted into tenements (Stow 1598, sig. 2D7r; Stow 1598, sig. E4r).

(STMA11.xml) Charing Cross

Charing Cross was one of twelve memorial crosses erected by King Edward I in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile. The cross was builded of stone and was of old time a fayre péece of work (Stow 1598, sig. 2B3r). It stood for three and a half centuries, but by the beginning of the 17th century [the cross] had fallen into a very ruinous condition (Sugden). It, as well as the other crosses, was condemned in 1643 and demolished in 1647.

(CHAR1.xml) Holborn

Holborn ran east-west from the junction of Hosier Lane, Cock Lane and Snow Hill to St. Giles High Street, and passed through Farringdon Without Ward and Westminster.

(HOLB1.xml) Cripplegate

Cripplegate was one of the original gates in the city wall (Weinreb, Hibbert, Keay, and Keay 221; Harben). It was the northern gate of a large fortress that occupied the northwestern corner of the Roman city.

(CRIP1.xml) Aldersgate

Aldersgate was one of London’s four original gates (Stow 1598, sig. C7r), labelled Alders gate on the Agas map. The gate was likely built into the Wall of London during the Roman Conquest, marking the northern entrance into the city.

Cheap Ward is west of Bassinghall Ward and Coleman Street Ward. Both the ward and its main street, Cheapside, are named after West Cheap (the market).

(CHEA1.xml) St. Dunstan in the West Information is not yet available. (STDU3.xml) St. Anthony’s Hospital

St. Anthony’s Hospital was associated with the Parish of St. Benet (Fink) and was on the opposite side of Threadneedle Street from the church of the parish, St. Benet Fink. According to Stow, Henry III granted the construction of a synagogue in this space. The building was constructed for that purpose in 1231, but, as Stow writes, the christians obtayned of the king that it should be dedicated to our blessed Lady, and since an Hospital being there builded, was called S. Anthonies in London (Stow 1598, sig. K8v). The hospital consisted of a church, almsnouse, and school.

(STAN10.xml) St. Andrew Holborn

St. Andrew Holborn was a parish church in Farringdon Without Ward, located on Holborn street between Fetter Lane and Shoe Lane. It is located on the Agas map and is labelled as S. Andrews. According to Stow, there was a grammar school, as well a monument dedicated to Lord Thomas Wriothesley either within or nearby St. Andrew Holborn. The church was first mentioned in Charter of King Edgar in 951. This medieval church was rebuilt in 1632 and managed to escape damage caused by the Great Fire. Christopher Wren rebuilt the church in 1684 making it the largest of his parish churches, measuring 32 by 19 meters and costing £9,000 (Weinreb and Hibbert 741).

(STAN1.xml) All Hallows the Great

All Hallows the Great was a church located on the south side of Thames Street and on the east side of Church Lane. Stow describes it as a faire Church with a large cloyster, but remarks that it has been foulely defaced and ruinated (Stow 1:235).

(ALLH6.xml) Thames Street

Thames Street was the longest street in early modern London, running east-west from the ditch around the Tower of London in the east to St. Andrew’s Hill and Puddle Wharf in the west, almost the complete span of the city within the walls.

(THAM1.xml) St. Peter upon Cornhill

St. Peter upon Cornhill stood at the highest point of the city in the south east of Cornhill Ward. According to a tablet preserved within the church, St. Peter upon Cornhill was founded by King Lucius and was the first Christian church in London (Noorthouk 606). This information was questioned by Stow, who admitted that he knows not by what authority (Stow 1:194) the tablet was written.

(STPE3.xml) Mercers’ Hall

The hall of the Mercers’ Company was located on the north side of Cheapside Street by the Great Conduit.

(MERC1.xml) Cheapside Market

In the middle ages, Westcheap was the main market west of Walbrook, so called to distinguish it from Eastcheap, the market in the east. By Stow’s time, the term Westcheap had fallen out of use in place of Cheapside Market. Stow himself, however, continued to use the term to distinguish the western end of Cheapside Street.

(CHEA5.xml) St. Paul’s School

St. Paul’s School was located on the eastern side of St. Paul’s Churchyard, west of the Old Change (Harben). It was founded by John Colet in 1512 and left to the Mercers’ Company (Stow 1633, sig. 2H4v; Harben).

(STPA4.xml) Christ’s Hospital

Located in Farringdon Within Ward, Christ’s Hospital was a opened in 1552 as a home for London’s needy children. Inspired by the preaching of Dr. Nicholas Ridley, Edward VI decided to charter the hospital days before his death in 1553 (Manzione 33). Although it began as a hospital, Christ’s Hospital eventually became known for its respected school (Pearce 206).

(CHRI2.xml) Greyfriars

Enduring for over three centuries, longer than any other London friary, Greyfriars garnered support from both England’s landed elite and common Londoners. Founded in 1225 on a tenament donated by London Mercer John Iwyn, Greyfriars housed London’s Franciscan Friars (known in England as the Grey Friars). The friary expanded from its original pittance of land on the west side of Stinking Lane to over four-and-a-half acres by 1354. With the patronage of Queens Margaret, Isabella, and Philippa throughout the fourteenth century, the Franciscans constructed a formidable church, London’s third largest after St. Paul’s and Westminster Abbey. After the friary’s closure in 1538 pursuant to the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the church became the centre of the newly established Christ Church parish, and the cloisters housed Christ’s Hospital (Holder 66–96).

Candlewick, Candlewright, or, later, Cannon Street, ran east-west from Walbrook Street in the west to the beginning of Eastcheap at its eastern terminus. Candlewick Street became Eastcheap somewhere around St. Clements Lane, and led into a great meat market (Stow 1:217). Together with streets such as Budge Row, Watling Street, and Tower Street, which all joined into each other, Candlewick Street formed the main east-west road through London between Ludgate and Posterngate.

(CAND1.xml) Manor of the Rose

Manor of the Rose was a residence on Suffolk Lane in Dowgate Ward. According to Stow, the building was converted into the Merchant Taylors’ School, in 1561 (Stow 1598, sig. N7r).

(ROSE1.xml) Knightrider Street

Knightrider Street ran east-west from Dowgate Street to Addle Hill, crossing College Hill, Garlick Hill, Trinity Lane, Huggin Lane, Bread Street, Old Fish Street Hill, Lambert or Lambeth Hill, St. Peter’s Hill, and Paul’s Chain. Significant landmarks included: the College of Physicians and Doctors’ Commons.

Gracechurch Street ran north-south from Cornhill Street near Leadenhall Market to the bridge. At the southern end, it was called New Fish Street. North of Cornhill, Gracechurch continued as Bishopsgate Street, leading through Bishop’s Gate out of the walled city into the suburb of Shoreditch.

(GRAC1.xml) Royal Exchange

Located in Broad Street Ward and Cornhill Ward, the Royal Exchange was opened in 1570 to make business more convenient for merchants and tradesmen (Harben 512). The construction of the Royal Exchange was largely funded by Sir Thomas Gresham (Weinreb, Hibbert, Keay, and Keay 718).

(ROYA1.xml) Bishopsgate Street

Bishopsgate Street ran north from Cornhill Street to the southern end of Shoreditch Street at the city boundary. South of Cornhill, the road became Gracechurch Street, and the two streets formed a major north-south artery in the eastern end of the walled city of London, from London Bridge to Shoreditch. Important sites included: Bethlehem Hospital, a mental hospital, and Bull Inn, a place where plays were performed before Shakespeare’s time (Weinreb and Hibbert 67).

The Julian calendar, in use in the British Empire until September 1752. This calendar is used for dates where the date of the beginning of the year is ambigious.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year regularized to beginning on 1 January.

The Julian calendar with the calendar year beginning on 25 March. This was the calendar used in the British Empire until September 1752.

The Gregorian calendar, used in the British Empire from September 1752. Sometimes referred to as New Style (NS). Years run from January 1 through December 31.

The Anno Mundi (year of the world) calendar is based on the supposed date of the creation of the world, which is calculated from Biblical sources. At least two different creation dates are in common use. See Anno Mundi (Wikipedia).

Regnal dates are given as the number of years into the reign of a particular monarch. Our practice is to tag such dates with calendar=regnal, and provide an equivalent date using a more systematic calendar (usually Julian) in a custom dating attribute.

 Molly Rothwell Molly Rothwell MR

Project Manager, 2022-present. Research Assistant, 2020-2022. Molly Rothwell was an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, with a double major in English and History. During her time at MoEML, Molly primarily worked on encoding and transcribing the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey, adding toponyms to MoEML’s Gazetteer, researching England’s early-modern court system, and standardizing MoEML’s Mapography.

 Jamie Zabel Jamie Zabel JZ

Research Assistant, 2020-2021. Managing Encoder, 2020-2021. Jamie Zabel was an MA student at the University of Victoria in the Department of English. She completed her BA in English at the University of British Columbia in 2017. She published a paper in University College London’s graduate publication Moveable Type (2020) and presented at the University of Victoria’s 2021 Digital Humanities Summer Institute. During her time at MoEML, she made significant contributions to the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey as proofreader, editor, and encoder, coordinated the encoding of the 1633 edition, and researched and authored a number of encyclopedia articles and geo-coordinates to supplement both editions. She also played a key role in managing the correction process of MoEML’s Gazetteer.

Janelle Jenstad is Associate Professor of English at the University of Victoria, Director of The Map of Early Modern London, and PI of Linked Early Modern Drama Online. She has taught at Queen’s University, the Summer Academy at the Stratford Festival, the University of Windsor, and the University of Victoria. With Jennifer Roberts-Smith and Mark Kaethler, she co-edited Shakespeare’s Language in Digital Media (Routledge). She has prepared a documentary edition of John Stow’s A Survey of London (1598 text) for MoEML and is currently editing The Merchant of Venice (with Stephen Wittek) and Heywood’s 2 If You Know Not Me You Know Nobody for DRE. The mdt (MoEML Document Type) prefix used on catRef/target points to a central taxonomy in the includes file.

The mdtlist (MoEML Document Type listing) prefix used in linking attributes points to a listings page constructed from a category in the central MDT taxonomy in the includes file. There are two variants, one with the plain xml:id of the category, meaning all documents in the specified category, and one with the suffix _subcategories, meaning all subcategories of the category.

The molgls (MoEML gloss) prefix used on term/corresp points to a a glossary entry in the GLOSS1.xml file.

This molvariant prefix is used on ref/target attributes during automated generation of gazetteer index files. It points to an element in the generated variant spellings listing file which lists all documents which contain a particular spelling variant for a location.

This molajax prefix is used on ref/target attributes during the static build process, to specify links which point to MoEML resources which should not be loaded into the source page during standalone processing; instead, these should be turned into links to the XML source documents, and at HTML page load time, these should be turned into AJAX calls. This is to handle the scenario in which a page such as an A-Z index of the whole site would end up containing virtually the whole site inside itself.

The molstow prefix is used on facs attributes to link to the HCMC verison of the Stow facsimiles. Usually the first group is the year (1633) and then last is the image number (0001).

Of Schooles and other Houses of Learning.

IN the reigne of King Stephen, and of Henry the ſecond, (ſaith Fitzſtephen) there were in London 3. principal Churches, which had famous Schooles, either by priviledge and ancient dignitie, or by fauour of ſome particular perſons, as of Doctors, which were accounted notable and renowned, for knowledge in Philoſophie. And there were other inferior Schools alſo.

Vpon Feſtivall dayes, the Maſters made ſolemne meetings in the Churches, where their Schollers diſputed Logically and demonſtratively: ſome bringing Enthimems, other, perfect Syllogiſmes: some diſputed for ſhew; others to trace out the truth; and cunning Sophiſters were brave ſcholars, when they flowed with words. Others uſed fallacies: Rhetoricians ſpake aptly to perswade, observing the precepts of Art, and omitting nothing that might ſerve their purpoſe. The Boyes of divers Schooles did cap or pot verſes, and contended of the principles of Grammar.

There were ſome, which (on the other ſide) with Epigrams and Rimes, nipping and quipping their fellowes, and the faults of others, though ſuppreſſing their names, moved thereby much laughter among their Auditors.

Hitherto Fitzſtephen, for ſchooles and ſcholars, and for their exerciſe in the Citie in his dayes,: ſithence the which time, as to me it ſeemeth, by increaſe of Colledges of ſtudents in the Vniverſities of Oxford and Cambridge, the frequenting of ſchooles, and exerciſes of ſcholars in the Citie, as had beene accuſtomed, very much decreaſed.

The three principall Churches which had theſe famous ſchooles by priviledges, muſt needs be the cathedral Church of S. Paul for one: ſeeing that by a generall Councell, holden in the yeere 1176. at Rome, in the Patriarchie of Laterane, it was decreed, that every Cathedrall Church ſhould have his ſchoolemaſter, to teach poore ſchollers, and others, as had bin accuſtomed, and that no man ſhould take any reward for licence to teach. The ſecond, as moſt ancient, may ſeeme to have beene the Monaſterie of S. Peters at Weſtminſter, whereof Ingulphus, Abbot of Crowland, in the reigne of William the Conqueror, writeth thus: 1 Jngulphus, an humble ſervant of God, borne of Engliſh parents, in the moſt beautifull Citie of London, for to attaine to learning, was firſt put to Weſtm. & after to ſtudy at Oxford, &c. And writing in praiſe of Queene Agitha, wife to Edward the Confeſſor: I have ſeene (ſaith he) often, when being but a Boy, I came to ſee my Father, dwelling in the Kings Court, and often comming from Schoole, when I G2met Of Schooles and Houſes of Learning. met the Queene, ſhe would oppoſe me touching my learning and leſſon. And falling from Grammar to Logicke, wherein ſhe had some knowledge, ſhe would ſubtilly conclude an Argument with me. And by her handmaiden give me three or foure peeces of money, and ſend mee unto the Palace, where I ſhould receive ſome victuals, and then bee diſmiſſed.

The third Schoole ſeemeth to have beene in the Monaſtery of S. Saviour, at Bermondſey in Southwarke. For other Priories, as of Saint Iohn by Smithfield, Saint Bartholomew in Smithfield, Saint Mary Overie in Southwarke, and that of the Holy Trinity by Ealdgate, were all of later foundation, and the Friers Colledges, and Hoſpitals in this Citie, were raiſed ſince them, in the reignes of Henry the 3. Edward the 1, 2, and 3. &c. All which houſes had their Schools, though not ſo famous as theſe firſt named.

But touching Schooles more lately advanced in this Citie, I read, that King Henry the fifth, having ſuppreſſed the Priories Aliens, whereof ſome were about London, namely, Our Lady of Rouncivall by Charing-Croſſe: one other Hoſpitall in Oldborne: one other without Creplegate; and the fourth without Alderſgate: beſides other that are now worne out of memory, and whereof there is no monument remaining, more than Rouncivall, converted to a Brotherhood, which continued till the reigne of Henry the eighth, or Edward the 6. This, I ſay, and other of their Schooles, being broken up and ceaſed, King Henry the 6. in the 24. of his reigne, by Patent appointed, that there ſhould be in London Grammar-Schooles, beſides S. Pauls, at S. Martins le grand, S. Mary le Bow, in Cheap, S. Dunſtans in the weſt, and S. Anthonies. And in the next yeere, to wit, 1394.Stow’s two dating methods do not correspond here. The year following the 24th year of Henry VI’s reign (i.e., his 25th year) should be between 31 August 1446 and 30 August 1447. the ſaid King ordained by Parliament, that foure other Grammer-Schooles ſhould be erected, to wit, in the Pariſhes of Saint Andrew in Oldborne, Alhallowes the great, in Thames ſtreet, Saint Peters upon Cornhill, and in the Hoſpitall of Saint Thomas of Acons in weſt Cheape. Since the which time, as divers Schooles, by ſuppreſſing of religious houſes (whereof they were members in the reigne of Henry the eighth, have beene decayed: ſo againe have ſome others beene newly erected and founded for them. As namely, Pauls ſchoole, in place of an old ruined houſe, was builded in moſt ample manner, and largely endowed in the yeere 1512. by Iohn Collet, Doctor of Divinity, and Deane of Pauls, for 153. poore mens children: for which there was ordained a Maſter, Submaſter or Vſher, and a Chaplaine. Againe, in the yeere 1553. after the erection of Chriſts Hoſpitall, in the late diſſolved houſe of the Gray Friers, a great number of poore children being taken in, a ſchoole was alſo ordained there, at the Citizens charges.

Alſo in the yeere 1561. the Merchant Taylors of London, founded one notable free Grammar-ſchoole, in the Pariſh of Saint Laurence Poultney, by Candle-weeke ſtreet; Richard Hils, late Maſter of that Company, having given 500. pound toward the purchaſe of an Houſe, called the Mannor of the Roſe, ſometime the Duke of Buckinghams, wherein the ſchoole is kept.

As for the meeting of Schoolemaſters on feſtivall dayes, at feſtivall Churches, and the diſputing of their ſchollers Logically, &c. whereof I have before ſpoken, the ſame was long ſince diſcontinued. But the arguing of ſchoole-boies about the principles of Grammar, hath beene continued even till our time: for I my ſelfe (in my youth) have yeerely ſeene, on the Eve of Saint Bartholomew the Apoſtle,Celebrated on 23 August. the ſchollers of divers Grammar-ſchooles, repaire unto the Churchyard of Saint Bartholomew the Priory in Smithfield, where, upon a banke boorded about under a Tree, ſome one ſcholar hath ſtepped up, and there hath appoſed and anſwered, till he were by some better ſcholler overcome and put downe. And then the overcommer taking the place, did like as the firſt: and in the end, the beſt oppoſers and anſwerers had rewards, which I obſerved not: but it made both good ſchoolemaſters, and alſo good ſcholars (diligently againſt ſuch times) to prepare themſelves for the obtaining of this Garland.

I remember there repaired to theſe exerciſes, (amongſt others) the Maſters and ſcholars of the free ſchooles of S. Pauls in London, of Saint Peters at Weſtminſter, Of Schooles and Houſes of Learning. Weſtminſter, of Saint Thomas Acons Hoſpital, and of Saint Anthonies Hoſpitall: whereof the laſt named, commonly preſented the beſt Scholers, and had the prize in thoſe dayes.

This Priorie of Saint Bartholomew being ſurrendred to Henry the eighth, thoſe diſputations of Scholers in that place ſurceaſed, and was againe, onely for a yeere or twaine, in the reigne of Edward the ſixth, revived in the Cloiſter of Chriſts Hoſpitall, where the beſt Scholers, (then ſtill of S. Anthonies Schoole) were rewarded with Bowes and Arrowes of ſilver, given to them by Sir Martin Bowes, Goldſmith.

Nevertheleſſe, howſoever the incouragement failed, the Scholers of Pauls, meeting with them of Saint Anthonies, would call them Saint Anthonies Pigs, and they againe would call the other Pigeons of Pauls; becauſe many Pigeons were bred in Pauls Church, and S. Anthonie was alwaies figured with a Pig following him: and mindfull of the former uſage, did for a long ſeaſon, diſorderly in the open ſtreet, provoke one another, with Salve tu quoque, placet tibi mecum diſputare? placet. And ſo proceeding from this to queſtions in Grammar, they uſually fell from words to blowes, with their ſatchels full of books, many times in great heaps, that they troubled the ſtreets and paſſengers: ſo that finally they were reſtrained with the decay of Saint Anthonies Schoole.

Out of this Schoole have ſprung divers famous perſons, whereof although time hath buried the names of many, yet in mine owne remembrance may be numbred theſe following: Sir Thomas Moore, Knight, Lord Chancellour of England: Doctor Nicholas Heath, ſometime Biſhop of Rocheſter, after of Worceſter, and laſtly, Archbiſhop of Yorke, and Lord Chancellour of England: Doctor Iohn Whitgift, Biſhop of Worceſter, and after Archbiſhop of Canturbury, &c.

Of later time, in the yeere of Chriſt 1582. there was founded a publike Lecture in Chirurgerie, to be read in the Colledge of Phyſicians in Knight-ridersſtreet, to beginne in the yeere 1584. on the ſixth of May, and ſo to be continued for ever twice a week, on Wedneſdſy & Friday, by the honourable Baron, Iohn, Lord Lombley, and the learned Richard Chadwell, Doctor in Phyſicke: the Reader whereof to be Richard Forſter, Doctor of Phyſicke, during his life.

Furthermore, about the ſame time, there was alſo begun a Mathematicall Lecture, to be read in a faire old Chappell, builded by Simon Eayre, within the Leaden-hall; whereof a learned Citizen borne, named Thomas Hood, was the firſt Reader. But this Chappell, and other parts of that Hall, being imployed for ſtowage of goods, taken out of a great Spaniſh Caracke, the ſaid Lecture ceaſed any more to be read, and was then in the yeere 1588. read in the houſe of Maſter Thomas Smith in Graſſe-ſtreet, &c.

Laſt of all, Sir Thomas Greſham knight, Agent to Queene Elizabeth, by his laſt Will and Teſtament, made in the yeere 1579. gave the Royall Exchange, and all the buildings therunto appertaining; that is to ſay, the one moity to the Maior and Communalty of London, and their ſucceſſors, upon truſt, that they performe as ſhall be declared: and the other moity to the Mercers, in like confidence. The Maior and Communalty are to finde foure, to reade Lectures of Divinity, Aſtronomy, Muſicke and Geometry, within his dwelling houſe in Biſhopſgate-ſtreet, and to beſtowe the ſumme of two hundred pound; to wit, fifty pound apeece, &c. The Mercers likewiſe are to find three Readers; that is, in Civill Law, Phyſicke and Rhetoricke, within the ſame dwelling houſe, the ſumme of 150. pound, to every Reader 50. pound, &c. Which gift was (ſince that time) confirmed by Parliament, to take effect, and beganne after the deceaſe of the Lady Anne Greſham, which hapned in the yeere 1596. and ſo is to continue for ever.

Wherupon, the Lectures were accordingly choſen, and appointed to begin their Readings in the Moneth of Iune, 1597. Whoſe names were, Maſter Anthony Wotton, for Divinity; Maſter Doctor Mathew Gwyn, for Phyſick; Doctor Henry Mountlow, for the Civill Law; Doctor Iohn Bull, for Muſicke; Maſter Breerewood, for Aſtronomie; Maſter Henrie Bridges, for Geometrie; G3and Houſes of Students in the Common Law. and Maſter Caleb Willis, for Rhetorick. Theſe Lectures are read daily, Sundaies excepted, in the Termetimes, by every one upon his day, in the morning betwixt nine and ten, in Latine: in the afternoon betwixt two and three, in Engliſh; ſave that Doctor Bull was diſpenſed with to reade the Muſicke Lecture in Engliſh onely, and upon two severall dayes, Thurſday and Saturday in the afternoons, betwixt 3. and 4. of the clock.
