As the primary place of residence for monarchs from <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianJan" from-custom="1529" to-custom="1698"><date exclude="#d236272e1205_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e1205_julianJan" notBefore="1529-01-11" notAfter="1699-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e1205_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e1205_julianMar" notBefore="1529-04-04" notAfter="1699-04-03"/>1529 to 1698</date>, <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> was an architectural testament to the shifting sociopolitical, religious, and aesthetic currents of Renaissance <ref target="ENGL2.xml">England</ref>. Sugden describes the geospatial location of <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> in noting that <quote>[i]t lay on the left bank of the <ref target="#THAM2">Thames</ref>, and extended from nearly the point where Westminster Bdge. now crosses the river to <ref target="#SCOT1">Scotland Yard</ref>, and from the river back to <ref target="#STJA1">St. James’s Park</ref></quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="#SUGD1">Sugden 564-565</ref>).</p></abstract>

                <p resp="#TEMP6"><ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall Palace</ref>, the <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Palace of Whitehall</ref> or simply <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref>, was one of the most complex and sizeable locations in the entirety of early modern Europe. As the primary place of residence for monarchs from <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianJan" from-custom="1529" to-custom="1698"><date exclude="#d236272e2786_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2786_julianJan" notBefore="1529-01-11" notAfter="1699-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2786_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2786_julianMar" notBefore="1529-04-04" notAfter="1699-04-03"/>1529 to 1698</date>, <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> was an architectural testament to the shifting sociopolitical, religious, and aesthetic currents of Renaissance <ref target="ENGL2.xml">England</ref>. Sugden describes the geospatial location of <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref>, noting that <quote>[i]t lay on the left bank of the <ref target="#THAM2">Thames</ref>, and extended from nearly the point where Westminster Bdge. now crosses the river to <ref target="#SCOT1">Scotland Yard</ref>, and from the river back to <ref target="#STJA1">St. James’s Park</ref></quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="#SUGD1">Sugden 564-565</ref>).</p>
                
                <p resp="#TEMP6">The first recorded reference to what is now known as <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> notes the property’s sale to <name ref="#GERI1">Gerin</name>, an administrator under <name ref="#HENR6">Henry II</name> (<ref type="bibl" target="#THUR1">Thurley 1</ref>). Ownership of the property shifted a number of times in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries before coming into the possession of <name ref="#GRAY5">Walter de Gray</name>, Archbishop of York, in <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" when-custom="1240"><date exclude="#d236272e2832_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2832_julianJan" notBefore="1240-01-08" notAfter="1241-01-07"/><date exclude="#d236272e2832_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2832_julianMar" notBefore="1240-04-01" notAfter="1241-03-31"/>1240</date> (<ref type="bibl" target="#THUR1">Thurley 4</ref>). The property became known for centuries as <soCalled><ref target="WHIT5.xml">York Place</ref></soCalled> because of <name ref="#GRAY5">Walter de Gray</name>’s ownership. Around <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" when-custom="1303" cert="medium"><date exclude="#d236272e2845_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2845_julianJan" notBefore="1303-01-09" notAfter="1304-01-08"/><date exclude="#d236272e2845_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2845_julianMar" notBefore="1303-04-02" notAfter="1304-04-01"/>1303</date>, <name ref="#EDWA1">Edward I</name> expanded upon <ref target="WHIT5.xml">York Place</ref> so that he and his family could temporarily reside there during his time spent at <ref target="#WEST6">Westminster</ref>. Following <name ref="#EDWA1">Edward I</name>’s expansions, <name ref="#BEDF2">George Neville</name> likely rebuilt and expanded upon <ref target="WHIT5.xml">York Place</ref> in the fifteenth century. By <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" notAfter-custom="1515"><date exclude="#d236272e2867_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2867_julianJan" notAfter="1516-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2867_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2867_julianMar" notAfter="1516-04-03"/>1515</date>, <name ref="#WOLS2">Cardinal Thomas Wolsey</name> began drastic, costly renovations to <ref target="WHIT5.xml">York Place</ref>, but upon <name ref="#WOLS2">Woolsey</name>’s removal in <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" when-custom="1529"><date exclude="#d236272e2880_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2880_julianJan" notBefore="1529-01-11" notAfter="1530-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2880_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2880_julianMar" notBefore="1529-04-04" notAfter="1530-04-03"/>1529</date>, <name ref="#HENR1">Henry VIII</name> began to use the house as his primary <ref target="#LOND5">London</ref> residence, during which time it began to be known as <soCalled><ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref></soCalled> (<ref type="bibl" target="#CANN3">Cannon and Crowcroft</ref>).</p>
                
                <p resp="#NEIG1"><ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> consisted of many galleries, a cock pit, a tennis court, a chapel and a Banqueting House. An account given by a German traveller in <date when-custom="1598" calendar="#julianSic" datingMethod="#julianSic"><date exclude="#d236272e2902_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2902_julianJan" notBefore="1598-01-11" notAfter="1599-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2902_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2902_julianMar" notBefore="1598-04-04" notAfter="1599-04-03"/>1598</date> described <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> as a <quote>truly royal structure <gap resp="#NEIG1" reason="sampling"/> Near the palace are seen an immense number of swans who wander up and down the river for miles</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="#SHEP9">Sheppard 17</ref>). Its relationship with the river is significant not only for its ease of access in transporting important visitors, but also in terms of the comings and goings of the monarch. For <name ref="#ELIZ2">Queen Elizabeth</name>, her bedrooms overlooked the river and gave her unlimited access. She often spent cool evenings on her barge (<ref type="bibl" target="#DUNL1">Dunlop 66</ref>). <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> also had its own outdoor pulpit, which served as the site where the Protestant martyr <name ref="#LATI4">Hugh Latimer</name> preached to <name ref="#EDWA4">Edward VI</name>. The outdoor pulpit was constructed to hold <quote>four times so many, as could have stood in the King’s chapel</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="#DUNL1">Dunlop 65</ref>).</p>
                
                <p resp="#NEIG1">The Banqueting House was added to <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> during <date when-custom="r_ELIZ1" datingMethod="#regnal" calendar="#regnal" from="1558-11-27" to="1603-04-03"><name ref="#ELIZ1">Elizabeth I</name>’s reign</date>, in time for the <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" notAfter-custom="1581"><date exclude="#d236272e2949_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2949_julianJan" notAfter="1582-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2949_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2949_julianMar" notAfter="1582-04-03"/>1581</date> marriage negotiations between <name ref="#ELIZ1">Elizabeth</name> and <name ref="#FRAN23">Francis</name>, Duke of Anjou (<ref type="bibl" target="#CHAR27">Charlton 11</ref>; <ref type="bibl" target="#SHEP9">Sheppard 36</ref>). In <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" notAfter-custom="1601"><date exclude="#d236272e2965_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2965_julianJan" notAfter="1602-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2965_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2965_julianMar" notAfter="1602-04-03"/>1601</date>, <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> and its Banqueting House served as a major royal palace for the visits of two important political dignitaries: the <name ref="#ORSI1">Virginio Orsini</name>, Duke of Bracciano, and the ambassador from the Tsar, <name ref="#GODU1">Boris Godunov</name>. It was described as <quote>a long square 332 foot in measure about; 30 principals made of great masts, being XI feet in length speece, standing upright <gap resp="#NEIG1" reason="sampling"/> the walls <gap resp="#NEIG1" reason="sampling"/> closed with canvas, and painted all the out sides <gap resp="#NEIG1" reason="sampling"/> most artificially with a work called rustic, much like unto stone</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="#CHAR27">Charlton 11</ref>).</p>
                
                <p resp="#TEMP6"><name ref="#JAME1">King James I</name> built a new Banqueting House designed by <name ref="#JONE1">Inigo Jones</name> in <date datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" when-custom="1634"><date exclude="#d236272e2998_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e2998_julianJan" notBefore="1634-01-11" notAfter="1635-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e2998_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e2998_julianMar" notBefore="1634-04-04" notAfter="1635-04-03"/>1634</date> (<ref type="bibl" target="#BLAT2">Blatherwick</ref>). <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> remained the primary residence for each of the Stuart monarchs throughout the seventeenth century until Mary II and William III left <ref target="WHIT5.xml">Whitehall</ref> in favour of their own palace. The vast majority of the palace was destroyed by a fire in <date calendar="#julianSic" datingMethod="#julianSic" when-custom="1698"><date exclude="#d236272e3011_julianMar" xml:id="d236272e3011_julianJan" notBefore="1698-01-11" notAfter="1699-01-10"/><date exclude="#d236272e3011_julianJan" xml:id="d236272e3011_julianMar" notBefore="1698-04-04" notAfter="1699-04-03"/>1698</date>, though <name ref="#JONE1">Inigo Jones</name>’ Banqueting House still remains (<ref type="bibl" target="#CANN3">Cannon and Crowcroft</ref>).</p>
