      <p>As the only bridge in <ref target="LOND5.xml">London</ref> crossing the <ref target="THAM2.xml">Thames</ref> until <date when-custom="1729" calendar="#julianSic" datingMethod="#julianSic"><date exclude="#d206188e261_julianMar" xml:id="d206188e261_julianJan" notBefore="1729-01-12" notAfter="1730-01-11"/><date exclude="#d206188e261_julianJan" xml:id="d206188e261_julianMar" notBefore="1729-04-05" notAfter="1730-04-04"/>1729</date>,
          <ref target="#LOND1">London Bridge</ref> was a focal point of the city. After its conversion from wood to stone, completed in <date when-custom="1209" datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic"><date exclude="#d206188e267_julianMar" xml:id="d206188e267_julianJan" notBefore="1209-01-08" notAfter="1210-01-07"/><date exclude="#d206188e267_julianJan" xml:id="d206188e267_julianMar" notBefore="1209-04-01" notAfter="1210-03-31"/>1209</date>,
          the bridge housed a variety of structures, including a chapel and a growing number of shops. The bridge was famous for the cityʼs grisly practice of displaying traitorsʼ heads on poles above its <ref target="GATE7.xml">gatehouses</ref>.
          Despite burning down multiple times, <ref target="#LOND1">London Bridge</ref> was one of the few structures not entirely destroyed by the <ref target="FIRE1.xml">Great Fire of London</ref> in

          <abstract><p>The <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> began approximately a mile south of <ref target="#LOND1">London Bridge</ref> and is south of the area depicted on the Agas map (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="stow_1598_BRID4.xml#stow_1598_BRID4_sig_Y5r">Stow 1598, sig. Y5r</ref>). <ref target="STMA154.xml">St. Mary (Newington)</ref> was also referred to as <soCalled><ref target="STMA154.xml">Newington Butts</ref></soCalled>, a name that is believed to originate from the ancient archery butts that were set up on the fields of the parish (<ref type="bibl" target="#MALD4">Malden</ref>; <ref type="bibl" target="#LYSO2">Lysons</ref>). One of the notable sites in the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> was <ref target="#NEBU1">Newington Butts</ref>, which was among the earliest playhouses to exist during the golden age of Elizabethan theatre (<ref type="bibl" target="#JOHN30">Johnson 26</ref>). While <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> discusses the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> in his <title level="m">Survey of London</title>, it was technically a <quote>distant parish</quote>, which lay outside the <name type="org" ref="#CORP1">Corporation of London</name>’s jurisdiction (<ref type="bibl" target="#BOUL2">Boulton 12</ref>). As a result, the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> fell under the control of Surrey authorities (<ref type="bibl" target="#BOUL2">Boulton 9</ref>).</p></abstract>

She is currently Co-Director of a sister project to <ref target="http://emlo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/"><title level="m">EMLO</title></ref> called <title level="m">Women’s Early Modern Letters Online</title> (<ref target="http://wemlo.net/"><title level="m">WEMLO</title></ref>). In the past, she held an internship with the
        curator of manuscripts at the <ref target="https://www.folger.edu/">Folger Shakespeare
         Library</ref>, completed a doctorate at <ref target="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">Oxford</ref> on
        paratext and early modern women writers, and worked a number of years for the <ref target="http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/">Bodleian Libraries</ref> and as a freelance editor.
        She has a passion for rare books and manuscripts as social and material artifacts, and is
        interested in the development of digital resources that will improve access to these
        materials while ensuring their ongoing preservation and conservation. An avid traveler, Kim
        has always loved both London and maps, and so is particularly delighted to be able to bring
        her early modern scholarly expertise to bear on the MoEML project.</p>

                <p>The <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> began approximately a mile south of <ref target="#LOND1">London Bridge</ref> and is south of the area depicted on the Agas map (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="stow_1598_BRID4.xml#stow_1598_BRID4_sig_Y5r">Stow 1598, sig. Y5r</ref>). <ref target="STMA154.xml">St. Mary (Newington)</ref> was also referred to as <soCalled><ref target="STMA154.xml">Newington Butts</ref></soCalled>, a name that is believed to originate from the ancient archery butts that were set up on the fields of the parish (<ref type="bibl" target="#MALD4">Malden</ref>; <ref type="bibl" target="#LYSO2">Lysons</ref>). One of the notable sites in the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> was <ref target="#NEBU1">Newington Butts</ref>, which was among the earliest playhouses to exist during the golden age of Elizabethan theatre (<ref type="bibl" target="#JOHN30">Johnson 26</ref>). While <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> discusses the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> in his <title level="m">Survey of London</title>, it was technically a <quote>distant parish</quote>, which lay outside the <name type="org" ref="#CORP1">Corporation of London</name>’s jurisdiction (<ref type="bibl" target="#BOUL2">Boulton 12</ref>). As a result, the <ref target="STMA154.xml">Parish of St. Mary (Newington)</ref> fell under the control of Surrey authorities (<ref type="bibl" target="#BOUL2">Boulton 9</ref>).</p>
