        Not to be confused with <ref target="#STKA9">St. Katherine Church</ref>, <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Cree</ref> was an old parish church in <ref target="#ALDG2">Aldgate Ward</ref> located on the
         north side of <ref target="#LEAD2">Leadenhall Street</ref> between <ref target="ALDG1.xml">Aldgate</ref> and <ref target="#STMA41">St. Mary Axe</ref>. <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> reports that the church was so old that one had
        to descend seven steps to enter it. He also adds that the church’s steeple and bell tower,
        built in 1504, were the most recent additions (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Cree</ref> is also known by the
        names <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine and the Blessed Trinity</ref> and <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Christ Church</ref>. The Church is drawn on the Agas
        map on the north side of <ref target="#LEAD2">Leadenhall Street</ref>, south of <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy Trinity Priory</ref> and east of the well in <ref target="#ALDG4">Aldgate Street</ref>. It has no label accompanying it.</p>

          Street</ref>, was an Augustinian Priory. <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> notes that <name ref="#MATI1">Queen Matilda</name> established the Priory in <date when-custom="1108" datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic"><date exclude="#d231847e385_julianMar" xml:id="d231847e385_julianJan" notBefore="1108-01-08" notAfter="1109-01-07"/><date exclude="#d231847e385_julianJan" xml:id="d231847e385_julianMar" notBefore="1108-04-01" notAfter="1109-03-31"/>1108</date> <quote>in the parishes of <ref target="#STMA142">Saint Marie Magdalen</ref>, <ref target="#STMI111">S. Michael</ref>, <ref target="#STKA109">S. Katherine</ref>, and the <ref target="HOLY105.xml">blessed Trinitie</ref>, which now was made but one <ref target="HOLY101.xml">Parish of the holy Trinitie</ref></quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>).

            <ref target="CORN2.xml">Cornhill Street</ref> to <ref target="#ALDG4">Aldgate Street</ref>. All three form part
            of the same road from <ref target="ALDG1.xml">Aldgate</ref> to
            <ref target="CHEA2.xml">Cheapside Street</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#WEIN1">Weinreb and Hibbert 462</ref>). The street acquired its
            name from <ref target="LEAD1.xml">Leadenhall</ref>, a onetime
            house and later a market. The building was reportedly famous for having a
            leaden roof (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#BEBB1">Bebbington 197</ref>).</p>

According to Stow, the church was begun by <name ref="PERS1.xml#SIRE1">Siredus</name> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>).             with the parishes of <ref target="#STMA42">St. Mary Magdalen, Aldgate</ref>,
            and <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Cree</ref>. According to a papal bull
            written during the pontificate of <name ref="PERS1.xml#INNO1">Innocent
                III</name>, it was located in the churchyard of <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy
                    Trinity Priory</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben</ref>).</p>

          Street</ref>. <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> remarks that the east side of the street belonged to <ref target="#ALDG2">Aldgate Ward</ref>, while the west side lay within the boundary of
        <ref target="LIME1.xml">Lime Street Ward</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). It was named after the church of <ref target="#STMA41">St. Mary
          Axe</ref>, located near the northwest corner of the street.</p>

                    <ref target="#ALDG4">Aldgate Street</ref> ran slightly south-west from <ref target="ALDG1.xml">Aldgate</ref> until it reached a pump, formerly a sweet
                    well. At that point, the street forked into two streets. The northern branch,
                    called <ref target="#ALDG4">Aldgate Street</ref>, ran west until it ran into
                        <ref target="CORN2.xml">Cornhill</ref> at <ref target="LIME2.xml">Lime
                        Street</ref>. At an earlier point in history, <ref target="CORN2.xml">Cornhill</ref> seems to have extended east past <ref target="LIME2.xml">Lime Street</ref> because the church of <ref target="#STAN8">St. Andrew
                        Undershaft</ref> was called <ref target="#STAN8">St. Andrew upon
                        Cornhill</ref> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben 10</ref>).</p>

<p>The church of <ref target="#STMA41">St. Mary Axe</ref> was a church on the west side of <ref target="#STMA7">St. Mary Axe
            Street</ref> in <ref target="LIME1.xml">Lime Street Ward</ref>. <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> asserts the church’s full name
            and dedication was <quote>S. Marie the virgine, Saint Vrsula, and the 11000. Virgins</quote>
            and believed that its common name, <ref target="#STMA41">St. Mary Axe</ref>, derived from a sign near the
            church’s east side (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). However, a
            document written during the <date when-custom="r_HENR1" datingMethod="#regnal" calendar="#regnal" from="1509-05-02" to="1547-02-07">reign of <name ref="#HENR1">Henry VIII</name></date> suggests a different
            history of its name. The church, dedicated to 11,000 martyred virgins, supposedly contained
            the three axes that were used in their executions (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben</ref>).</p>

<p><ref target="#FENC1">Fenchurch Street</ref> (often called <mentioned><ref target="#FENC1">Fennieabout</ref></mentioned>) ran east-west from
            the pump on <ref target="#ALDG4">Aldgate High Street</ref> to <ref target="GRAC1.xml">Gracechurch Street</ref> in <ref target="LANG1.xml">Langbourne Ward</ref>, crossing <ref target="MARK1.xml">Mark Lane</ref>,
            <ref target="MINC1.xml">Mincing Lane</ref>, and <ref target="RODD1.xml">Rodd
                Lane</ref> along the way. <ref target="#FENC1">Fenchurch Street</ref> was home to several famous
            landmarks, including the <ref target="KIHE1.xml">King’s Head Tavern</ref>, where
            the then-<name ref="PERS1.xml#ELIZ1">Princess Elizabeth</name> is said to have
            partaken in <quote>pork and peas</quote> after her sister, <name ref="PERS1.xml#MARY1">Mary I</name>, released her from the <ref target="TOWE5.xml">Tower of London</ref> in <date when-custom="1554-05" datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic" notBefore="1554-05-11" notAfter="1554-06-10">May of 1554</date> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#WEIN2">Weinreb, Hibbert, Keay, and Keay 288</ref>). <ref target="#FENC1">Fenchurch Street</ref> was on the royal
            processional route through the city, toured by monarchs on the day before their
            coronations.</p>

                <p><name ref="#STOW6">John Stow</name>’s ward-by-ward list of parish churches names three churches in <ref target="#ALDG2">Aldgate Ward</ref>: <quote><ref target="#STCA1">Saint Katherine Christs Church</ref></quote> (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="stow_1633_ALDG2.xml#stow_1633_ALDG2_sig_O4r">Stow 1633, sig. O4r</ref>), <quote><ref target="#STAN8">Saint Andrew Vndershaft</ref></quote> (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="stow_1633_ALDG2.xml#stow_1633_ALDG2_sig_O4v">Stow 1633, sig. O4v</ref>), and <quote><ref target="#STKA1">S. Katharine, called Coleman</ref></quote> (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="stow_1633_ALDG2.xml#stow_1633_ALDG2_sig_P1v">Stow 1633, sig. P1v</ref>). MoEML however, links four churches to entries in our <ref target="mdtEncyclopedia_subcategories.xml">encyclopedia</ref>. This discrepancy is the result of different ways of thinking about the churches: <name ref="#STOW6">Stow</name> lists active parishes (institutions), whereas our map shows physical buildings on particular sites. Although <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy Trinity Priory</ref> (the progenitor of <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Cree</ref>) had been dissolved in <date from-custom="1531" to-custom="1532" datingMethod="#julianSic" calendar="#julianSic"><date exclude="#d231847e3353_julianMar" xml:id="d231847e3353_julianJan" notBefore="1531-01-11" notAfter="1533-01-10"/><date exclude="#d231847e3353_julianJan" xml:id="d231847e3353_julianMar" notBefore="1531-04-04" notAfter="1533-04-03"/>1531–1532</date>, its buildings remained on the site just north of the <ref target="#STCA1">parish church of St. Katherine Cree</ref> (or <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Christ Church</ref>). On the Agas map, the complex of buildings formerly belonging to <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy Trinity Priory</ref> is labelled <quote><ref target="#HOLY1">Crychur</ref></quote>, even through the buildings were now owned by various merchants and courtiers. Just south of this complex, on <ref target="#LEAD2">Leadenhall Street</ref>, stands the <ref target="#STCA1">parish church of St. Katherine Cree</ref>.</p>
                
                <p>Our <ref target="mdtEncyclopedia_subcategories.xml">encyclopedia</ref> has separate entries for <ref target="#STCA1">St. Katherine Cree</ref> and for <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy Trinity Priory</ref> (<ref target="#HOLY1">Christ Church</ref>), but the two institutions have an entwined history.</p>

The former chapel of <ref target="#STMI11">St. Michael</ref> and the church of <ref target="#STKA9">St. Katherine, Aldgate</ref> were in the yard of the priory. <ref target="#HOLY1">Holy Trinity Priory</ref> was also known as <ref target="#HOLY1">Christ Church</ref>. The parishioners of the three parishes continued their worship in the Priory church.</item>
