Aldgate Street ran slightly south-west from Aldgate until it reached a pump, formerly a sweet well. At that point, the street forked into two streets. The northern branch, called Aldgate Street, ran west until it ran into Cornhill at Lime Street. At an earlier point in history, Cornhill seems to have extended east past Lime Street because the church of St. Andrew Undershaft was called St. Andrew upon Cornhill (Harben 10).

Lime Street is a street that ran north-south from Leadenhall Street in the north to Fenchurch Street in the south. It was west of St. Andrew Undershaft and east of Leadenhall. It appears that the street was so named because people made or sold Lime there (Stow). This claim has some historical merit; in the 1150s one Ailnoth the limeburner lived in the area (Harben; BHO).
Aldgate Ward is located within the London Wall and east of Lime Street Ward. Both the ward and its main street, Aldgate Street, are named after Aldgate, the eastern gate into the walled city (Stow 1633, sig. N6v).
Cornhill was a significant thoroughfare and was part of the cityʼs main major east-west thoroughfare that divided the northern half of London from the southern half. The part of this thoroughfare named Cornhill extended from St. Andrew Undershaft to the three-way intersection of Threadneedle, Poultry, and Cornhill where the Royal Exchange was built. The name Cornhill
preserves a memory both of the cornmarket that took place in this street, and of the topography of the site upon
which the Roman city of Londinium was built.
Note: Cornhill and Cornhill Ward are nearly synonymous in terms of location and nomenclature - thus, it can be a challenge to tell one from the other. Topographical decisions have been made to the best of our knowledge and ability.
Leadenhall Street ran east-west from Cornhill Street to Aldgate Street. All three form part of the same road from Aldgate to Cheapside Street (Weinreb and Hibbert 462). The street acquired its name from Leadenhall, a onetime house and later a market. The building was reportedly famous for having a leaden roof (Bebbington 197).
Lime Street Ward is west of Aldgate Ward. The ward is named after its principle street, Lime Street, which takes its name from the making or ſelling of Lime there
, according to
Gracechurch Street ran north-south from Cornhill Street near Leadenhall Market to the bridge. At the southern end, it was called
New Fish Street
. North of Cornhill, Gracechurch
continued as Bishopsgate Street, leading through
Bishop’s Gate out of the walled city into the
suburb of Shoreditch.

The Anno Mundi (year of the world
) calendar is based on the supposed date of the
creation of the world, which is calculated from Biblical sources. At least two different
creation dates are in common use. See Anno Mundi (Wikipedia).
Regnal dates are given as the number of years into the reign of a particular monarch. Our practice is to tag such dates with @calendar="regnal", and provide an equivalent date using a more systematic calendar (usually Julian) in a custom dating attribute.
Most MoEML documents, or significant fragments with @xml:id attributes, can
be addressed using the mol: prefix and accessed through the web application
with their id + .xml.
The molagas prefix points to the shape representation of a location on MoEML’s OpenLayers3-based rendering of the Agas Map.

The mdt (MoEML Document Type) prefix used on <catRef>/@target points to a central taxonomy in the includes file.
The mdtlist (MoEML Document Type listing) prefix used in linking attributes points to a listings page constructed from a category in the central MDT taxonomy in the includes file. There are two variants, one with the plain @xml:id of the category, meaning all documents in the specified category, and one with the suffix _subcategories
, meaning all subcategories of the category.
The molgls (MoEML gloss) prefix used on <term>/@corresp points to a a glossary entry in the GLOSS1.xml file.
This molvariant prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during automated generation of gazetteer index files. It points to an element in the generated variant spellings listing file which lists all documents which contain a particular spelling variant for a location.
This molajax prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes during the static build process, to specify links which point to MoEML resources which should not be loaded into the source page during standalone processing; instead, these should be turned into links to the XML source documents, and at HTML page load time, these should be turned into AJAX calls. This is to handle the scenario in which a page such as an A-Z index of the whole site would end up containing virtually the whole site inside itself.
The molstow prefix is used on @facs attributes to link to the HCMC verison of the Stow facsimiles. Usually the first group is the year (1633) and then last is the image number (0001).
The molshows prefix is used on @facs attributes to link to the copies of page-images from mayoral shows stored in the london account on the HCMC server. The first group is the year (1633), the second is the source repository, and then last is the image file name.
The sb prefix is used on <ref>/@target attributes to link to Stow’s Books URLs at UToronto.

Now, from the North to the South,
this Citie was (of old time) divided,
not by a large highway or street, as from
East to West, but by a faire Brooke of
sweet water, which came from out the
North Fields, through the Wall and
midst of the Citie, into the River of
Thames, and which division is (till this
day) constantly and without change
maintained. This water was called (as
I have said) Walbrooke;
not Gallus brook,
of a Romane Captaine, slaine by Asclepiodatus, and throwne therein, as some
have fabuled; but of running through
and from the Wall of this Citie. The
course whereof, (to prosecute it parti
cularly) was and is from the said Wall,
to Saint Margarets Church in Lothbury; from thence, beneath the lower part
of the Grocers Hall, about the East part
of their Kitchen, under Saint Mildreds
Church, somewhat West from the said
Stockes Market: from thence, through
Buckles berry, by one great house buil
ded of stone and Timber, called the old
Barge; because Barges out of the River
of Thames were then rowed up so farre
into this Brooke, on the backe-side of
the houses in Walbrooke street, (which
street taketh name of the said Brooke)

behind the other houses to Elbow lane,
and by a part thereof, downe Greenewitch lane, into the River of Thames.
This is the course of Walbrooke,
which
was (of old time) bridged over in divers
places, for passage of horses and men, as
need required: but since, by meanes of
encrochment on the banks thereof, the
channel being greatly straightned, and
other annoyances done thereunto, at
length the same (by common consent)
was arched over with bricke, and paved
with stone, equall with the ground,
where-through it passed, and is now in
most places builded upon, that no man
may by the eye discerne it; and there
fore the trace thereof is hardly knowne
to the common people.
This Citie being thus divided from
East to West, and from North to
South; I am now further to shew, how
the same was (of old time) broken into
divers parts, called Wards, whereof
Fitzstephen,
more than foure hundred
yeeres since, writeth thus: This Citie
(saith he) even as Rome, is divided into
Wards: it hath yeerely Sheriffes, in stead
of Consuls: It hath the dignity of Senators
in Aldermen, &c.
The number of these Wards in London,
were both before and in the reigne
of Henry the third, 25. in all: whereof
13. lay on the East side of the said Walbrooke, and 11. on the West. Notwith
standing, these 11. grew much more
large than those on the East: and ther
fore in the yeere of Christ, 1393. the
seventeenth of Richard the second, Faringdon Ward, which was then one en
tire Ward, but mightily increased of
buildings without the gates; was by
Parliament appointed to be divided in
to twaine, and to have two Aldermen,
to wit, Faringdon within, and Faringdon
without, which made up the number
of twelve Wards on the West side of
Walbrooke, and so came the whole num
ber of 25. on both sides.
Moreover, in the yeere 1550. the Mai
or, Communalty, and Citizens of London, purchasing the liberties of the Bur
rough of Southwarke, appointed the
same to be a Ward of London; and so
became the number of thirteene wards
on the East, twelve on the West, and
one South the River Thames, in the said
Borough of Southwarke, in the County
of Surrey;
which in all arise to the num
ber of 26. Wards, and 26. Aldermen
of London to governe them.
