               <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in
               <ref target="http://contentdm.library.uvic.ca/cdm/compoundobject/collection/collection25/id/993">UVic ContentDM</ref> (Collection 25, <idno>993</idno>).
               For convenience, and only because <idno type="STC">STC 23345</idno> has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription
               of the <date notBefore="1640-01-11">post-1640</date> <idno type="STC">STC 23345.5</idno>/<idno type="Wing">Wing S5773A</idno>
               (<idno type="TCP">TCP A13053</idno>), available on <ref target="https://github.com/textcreationpartnership/A13053">GitHub</ref>). The names of the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers are unknown. <name ref="#SCHA2">Paul Schaffner</name> edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before <date notAfter="2012">2012</date>.
               <name ref="#RAHT1">Sebastian Rahtz</name> created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. <name ref="#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name>
               downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. <name ref="#TAKE1">Joey Takeda</name> and <name ref="#HOLM3">Martin Holmes</name> processed the file programmatically
               to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on
               predictable patterns. <name type="org" ref="#TEAM1">MoEML Research Assistants</name> at the <name type="org" ref="#UVIC3">University of Victoria</name> performed the
               following additional tasks: transcribed the <date notBefore="1633-01-11" notAfter="1634-04-03">1633</date> text from the <name type="org" ref="#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy
               in those places where the <date notBefore="1640-01-11">post-1640</date> text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP
               transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the <name type="org" ref="#UVIC3">UVic</name> copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic
               catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor
               <name ref="#JENS1">Janelle Jenstad</name>.</bibl>

              <p><ref target="#WEST2">Westminster Hall</ref> is <quote>the only surviving part of the original <ref target="WEST5.xml">Palace of Westminster</ref></quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#WEIN1">Weinreb and Hibbert 1011</ref>) and is located on the west side of the <ref target="THAM2.xml">Thames</ref>. It is located on the bottom left-hand corner of the Agas map, and is labelled as <quote><ref target="#WEST2">Weſtmynſter hall</ref></quote>. Originally built as an extension to <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA7">Edward the Confessor</name>’s palace in <date notBefore="1097-01-07" notAfter="1098-03-30">1097</date>, the hall served as the setting for banquets through the reigns of many kings.</p>

        step whereby encoders check each other’s work. We use the term

<lb/>MAIESTIE and the STATE to erect a Colledge of Di<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>vines, and other Learned men, at <ref target="#POOL1">CHELSEY</ref>, together with
<lb/>the Copy of his Majeſties Letters in favouring the ſame; and
<lb/>an addition of ſome Motives forcible to excite good Chriſtians
<lb/>zeale to a voluntary and liberall contribution.</head>

<lb/>hindred mens devotion
<lb/>in contributing toward
<lb/>the erection and dotation of <ref target="#POOL1"><hi rendition="simple:italic">Chelſey</hi>
<lb/>Colledge</ref>, we have thought it very fit,
<lb/>together with his Majeſties Letters,
<lb/>ſeconded by my Lord Archbiſhop of
<lb/><hi rendition="simple:italic">Canterbury</hi>, to declare the reaſons that
<lb/>cauſed this worke to bee undertaken,
<lb/>and to adde ſuch Motives, as wee have
<lb/>ſuppoſed may be moſt effectuall to give
<lb/>ſatisfaction to his Majeſties deſire, and
<lb/>perfection to this honourable deſigne.</p>
                     <p>Firſt it was conſidered, that the
<lb/>Popes Agents travelled Sea and Land,
<lb/>wrote bookes in favour of their faction,
<lb/>deviſed lies and ſlanders, to bring Re<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ligion and the Profeſſors thereof into
<lb/>hatred, and not ſparing any ſtanding
<lb/>in their way, by falſhood and trechery
<lb/>oppugned Kings and Princes, that
<lb/>could not endure the Popes tyrannicall
<lb/>government. And for this end, men
<lb/>of ready wits, good ſpeech, long expe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rience, and competent learning, have
<lb/>beene maintained in Colledges, furni<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſhed with Bookes, holpen with Coun<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſell and directions, bound with Lawes
<lb/>and Oathes, to uphold the Papall Hie<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rarchie and Hereſie, and which mo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>veth much, encouraged with great
<lb/>promiſes and large rewards.</p>
                     <p>Whereunto albeit private men pi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ouſly affected have from time to time
<lb/>oppoſed themſelves, yet becauſe they
<lb/>wanted encouragement to undertake
<lb/>ſo great a labour, counſell of their An<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cients to direct them, Bookes and Li<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>braries to inſtruct them, formes of pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ceeding to keepe them in compaſſe,
<lb/>and rewards to maintaine them, thoſe
<lb/>excepted that are due for Eccleſiasti<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>call cures, it was further adviſed, that
<lb/>to make a ſufficient defence for the
<lb/>truth of Religion, and honour of the
<lb/>State, and a ſtrong and continuall op<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>poſition againſt the continued lies,
<lb/>ſlanders, errors, hereſies, ſects, idola<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tries, and blaſphemies of our Adverſa<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ries, it was neceſſary to unite our for<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ces, and to appoint ſpeciall men, that
<lb/>without other diſtraction might at<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tend the cauſe of Religion and the

<lb/>body, and united with one forme of

<lb/>the vſurpation of Popes, the liberty of
<lb/>Chriſtians, againſt the yoke of Super<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſtition, to ſupply the defect of teaching
<lb/>where Appropriations have devoured
<lb/>the Miniſtery, by teaching and confe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rence to convince the obſtinate Papiſts
<lb/>and Atheiſt, and by all lawfull meanes

                     <p>W<hi rendition="simple:italic">Hereas the enemies of the
<lb/>Goſpell have ever beene for<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ward to write, and publiſh
<lb/>bookes for confirming of erronious doctrine,
<lb/>and impugning the truth, and now of late
<lb/>ſeeme more carefull then before to ſend
<lb/>daily into our Realmes ſuch their writings,
<lb/>whereby our loving Subjects, though other<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>wiſe well diſpoſed might be ſeduced, unleſſe
<lb/>ſome remedy thereof ſhould bee provided.
<lb/>We by the adviſe of our Councell, have late<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ly granted a corporation, and given our

Whereupon</hi> <name ref="#SUTC1"><hi rendition="simple:italic">Doctor</hi> Sutcliffe</name> <hi rendition="simple:italic">deſigned

<lb/>Gods glory, and the ſaving of ma<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ny a ſoule within this Kingdome, I cannot
<lb/>but wiſh that all devout and well affected
<lb/>perſons ſhould by your ſelfe and the Prea<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>chers in your Dioceſse, as well publikely as

<lb/>that this Colledge is not an idle pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ject of any private man, but a pious
<lb/>worke projected by the King &amp; State,
<lb/>and that all that profeſſe Religion, and
<lb/>deſire the continuance and advance<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ment thereof, yea, all that honour his
<lb/>Majeſty, and wiſh the proſperity of the
<lb/>State, and deſire the increaſe of lear<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ning, have intereſt therein, and I hope

<lb/>Being then a worke of piety for the
<lb/>maintenance of true Religion, who can
<lb/>be accounted truly pious and religious,
<lb/>and yet yeeld no helpe to advance it?
<lb/>being a project to maintaine the ho<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>nour of the State, what good Subject
<lb/>will not contribute to ſet forward this
<lb/>project? but to touch onely the point
<lb/>of Gods honour, let us remember the
<lb/>words of the Wiſe man, <hi rendition="simple:italic">Prov. 3. Ho<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>nour the Lord with thy ſubſtance</hi>. Let us
<lb/>alſo conſider what the Lord himſelfe
<lb/>ſaith, <hi rendition="simple:italic">1 Sam. 2. Them that honour me, I
<lb/>will honour; and they that deſpiſe mee,
<lb/>ſhall be deſpiſed</hi>. Now who can ſay, hee
<lb/>honoureth God that ſuffereth him by
<lb/>idolatry, ſuperſtition, and blaſphemy to
<lb/>be diſhonoured, and will give nothing
<lb/>to ſuppreſſe <hi rendition="simple:italic"><name ref="#BAAL1">Baal</name>s</hi> Prieſts, and is con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tent that the Pope be worſhipped like
                        <lb/>the Idoll <name ref="#BAAL1" rendition="simple:italic">Bell</name>? can Gods honour ſtand
<lb/>with the ſuperſtition, hereſie, idola<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>try, and blaſphemy of Papiſts, prophan<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>neſſe of Atheiſts, fanaticall doctrine
<lb/>of Schiſmatickes, and idle Noveliſts?</p>
                     <p>It is not ſufficient for true Chriſtians
<lb/>to profeſſe true Religion, but they muſt
<lb/>with zeale maintaine it, and with heart
<lb/>abhorre, and with hand ſuppreſſe ido<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>latry and ſuperſtition, <hi rendition="simple:italic">Who will riſe up
<lb/>with me againſt the wicked</hi>, saith the Pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>phet, <hi rendition="simple:italic">Pſal</hi>. 94. And <hi rendition="simple:italic">Pſal</hi>. 139. he ſaith,
<lb/><hi rendition="simple:italic">Hee hated thoſe that hated the Lord with
<lb/>an unfained hatred</hi>. The Law <hi rendition="simple:italic">Deut</hi>. 13.
<lb/>is direct againſt ſuch as intice us to
<lb/>ſerve other gods, our eye may not pity
<lb/>them, nor may we ſhew mercy unto
<lb/>them, no although they bee our bro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>thers, or our wives that lie in our bo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſome.</p>
                     <p>
                       An odious thing alſo it is, either to
<lb/>ſuffer truth to bee ſuppreſſed, or lies to
<lb/>be received. <name ref="#AUGU5">Saint <hi rendition="simple:italic">Auguſtine</hi></name> <hi rendition="simple:italic">in Epiſt.
<lb/>ad Caſulanum</hi>, ſaith, It is a fault to hide
<lb/>truth, as well as to tell lies; <foreign xml:lang="la" rendition="simple:italic">Vterque reus
<lb/>eſt, &amp; qui veritatem occultat, &amp; qui
<lb/>mendacium dicit. Chryſoſtome Homil. 25.
<lb/>in Math.</foreign> doth charge him to be a Tray<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tor unto Truth, that dare not boldly
<lb/>utter it or defend it; <foreign xml:lang="la" rendition="simple:italic">Non ille ſolum eſt
<lb/>proditor veritatis qui veritatem tranſgre<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>diens pro veritate mendacium loquitur,
<lb/>ſed etiam qui non liberè veritatem pronun<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>tiat quam pronuntiare tenetur, aut non
<lb/>liberè veritatem defendit quam liberè de<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>fendere convenit.</foreign></p>
                     <p>Some ſuppoſe that Chriſtianity and
<lb/>Popery may ſtand together, and them<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſelves as Newters ſtand betweene both,
<lb/>or as Mediators would reconcile both.
<lb/>But can <name ref="#JESU1">Chriſt</name> bee reconciled to Anti-chriſt? 
<lb/>there is no concord betwixt
<lb/><name ref="#JESU1" rendition="simple:italic">Chriſt</name> and <hi rendition="simple:italic">Belial</hi>, ſaith the Apoſtle,
                        <lb/> <hi rendition="simple:italic">2 Cor. 6. <name ref="#ELIJ1">Elias</name></hi> told us there is no halt<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ing betweene two Religions: no man
<lb/>that honoureth any Creature can ſay
<lb/>he truly honoureth God, for God gi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>veth not his honour to Creatures, <hi rendition="simple:italic">Aſa</hi>
   <lb/>1 <hi rendition="simple:italic">King.</hi> 15. was a good King, yet it is
<lb/>imputed to him that hee tooke not
<lb/>downe the high places. The Biſhop of
<lb/>the Church of <hi rendition="simple:italic">Pergamus, Apocal</hi>. 2. is
<lb/>reproved for ſuffering them that taught
<lb/>the doctrine of <name ref="#BALA1" rendition="simple:italic">Balaam</name>; and the Bi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſhop of <hi rendition="simple:italic">Thyatira</hi>, for permitting <name ref="#JEZE1" rendition="simple:italic">Ieſabel</name>
<lb/>to teach and deceive the people; and
<lb/>ſhall the <name type="org" ref="#CHUR8">Church of <hi rendition="simple:italic">England</hi></name> any longer
<lb/>ſuffer the Romiſh Balamites, and the
<lb/>falſe Prieſts of <name ref="#BAAL1" rendition="simple:italic">Baal</name> maintained by the
<lb/>Romiſh <name ref="#JEZE1" rendition="simple:italic">Ieſabel</name> and her Conſorts to ſe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>duce Gods people? The falſe Prieſts of
<lb/><name ref="#BAAL1" rendition="simple:italic">Bel</name> uſed all art and cunning practices to
<lb/>deceive, and now will not ſuffer any
<lb/>Religion but that of their god <name ref="#BAAL1" rendition="simple:italic">Bel</name>, the
<lb/>Pope; and ſhall not true Chriſtians uſe
<lb/>equall diligence to maintaine truth, and
<lb/>ſuppreſſe Popery, and all other idola<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>trous and falſe Religion? <foreign xml:lang="la" rendition="simple:italic">Ingemui fate<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>or</foreign> (ſaith <name ref="#JERO1" rendition="simple:italic">Hierome</name>)  <foreign xml:lang="la" rendition="simple:italic">minus nobis ineſſe vo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>luntatis ad propugnandam veritatem,
<lb/>quam ineſt illis cupiditatis ad inculcandum
<lb/>mendacium</foreign>: I ſighed (ſaith he) ſeeing
<lb/>leſſe deſire in us to defend truth, then
<lb/>in our adverſaries to maintaine lies.</p>
                     <p>This Colledge then being erected
<lb/>for maintenance of truth and Gods true
<lb/>ſervice, and a reſolute oppoſition a<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>gainſt errors and falſe worſhip of God,

<lb/>meanes to increaſe learning, and to ſup<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ply the defects of places haunted with
<lb/>the ſpirits of Antichriſt, the Ieſuits,
<lb/>and Maſſe-prieſts, and therefore can<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>not chuſe but be well approved of all,
<lb/>that either deſire a learned Miniſtery,
<lb/>or love learning. Finally, ſeeing the
<lb/>Church hath received no greater diſ<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>honour by any, then by unſufficient and
<lb/>unlearned Churchmen, I hope this may
<lb/>bee a meanes to recover ſome part of
<lb/>their loſt honour.</p>

<lb/>Wherefore, whether we regard the
<lb/>ſervice of God, or the honour we owe
<lb/>to our King, or the love wee beare to
<lb/>our Country and the State, let us not
<lb/>ſhew our ſelves ſparing or backward
<lb/>in yeelding our ayd to ſet forward a
<lb/>worke ſo religious and profitable for
<lb/>the Church, ſo honourable for the
<lb/>State, ſo neceſſary in regard of the ma<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>lice of our adverſaries, and the defects
<lb/>and diſcouragement of our owne for<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ces. Other collections have beene ei<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther for private perſons or ſtrangers, or
<lb/>places remote, or matters concerning
<lb/>some particular occaſions. This con<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>cerneth a generall good, and toucheth
<lb/>every man both in conſcience and ho<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>nour. Heretofore wee have endevou<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>red to maintaine Religion, and favour
<lb/>others abroad, let us not therefore neg<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>lect our ſelves, and our owne honour,
<lb/>profit, and neceſſary ſervice at home.
<lb/>Neither let any man thinke it ſtrange,
<lb/>that a worke of ſuch greatneſſe ſhould
<lb/>be advanced by this weake meanes, or
<lb/>that a project ſo neceſſary ſhould pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ceed ſo ſlowly. Almighty God, albeit
<lb/>all-ſufficient, yet would have his owne
<lb/>Tabernable built by the voluntary offe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rings of his people. <hi rendition="simple:italic">Speake</hi>, ſaith God
<lb/>to <hi rendition="simple:italic"><name ref="#MOSE1">Moyſes</name>, Exod. 25. to the children of
<lb/>Iſrael, that they receive an offering for me
<lb/>of every man whoſe heart giveth it freely</hi>.
<lb/>And <hi rendition="simple:italic">Exod</hi>. 36. it followeth, and <hi rendition="simple:italic">they
<lb/>brought ſtill unto <name ref="#MOSE1">Moyſes</name> free gifts every
<lb/>morning, and they ceaſed not untill they
<lb/>were ſtayed from offering</hi>. <name ref="#SOLO1">King <hi rendition="simple:italic">Solomon</hi></name>
<lb/>likewiſe was greatly holpen in the buil<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ding of the Temple by the contributi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>on of his Subjects, as appeareth by the
<lb/>words of Scriptures, <hi rendition="simple:italic">1 King. 9. 19.</hi> fur<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ther, by voluntary offerings and contri<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>butions, the Temple was repaired by
                        <lb/><name ref="#JOAS1" rendition="simple:italic">Ioaſh</name>, 2 <hi rendition="simple:italic">King.</hi> 12. and by <name ref="#JOSI1" rendition="simple:italic">Ioſiah</name>, 2 <hi rendition="simple:italic">Chron.</hi>
<lb/>34. and this hath beene the uſe and
<lb/>practice of ancient times in building,
<lb/>and endowing moſt famous Churches,
<lb/>Colledges, Schooles, and other Monu<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ments of Religion and Learning, both
<lb/>in our owne and other Countries. Our

<lb/>meanes to build many Monaſteries and
<lb/>Colledges, and Schooles for Jeſuites

<lb/>Superſtition, Hereſie, Idolatry, and

<lb/>make good their owne corruptions in
<lb/>Religion, and uſurpations upon the

<lb/>they done not onely in <hi rendition="simple:italic">Europe</hi>, but also
<lb/>in the <hi rendition="simple:italic">Indies</hi>, and not one in every King<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dome, but in the ſame State divers, and
<lb/>almoſt in every great City one. And
<lb/>ſhall not this flouriſhing Kingdome
<lb/>build and endow one Colledge for the
<lb/>maintenance of Gods true ſervice, and
<lb/>the honour of the whole State? It were
<lb/>a diſhonour to our Nation, and the

                     <p>The worke we confeſſe hath hither<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>to proceeded ſlowly: And no marvell,

                     <p>If wee honour God with our ſub<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ſtance, he will honour us and encreaſe
<lb/>our ſubſtance. If we build a houſe for
<lb/>the maintenance of his truth, that it
<lb/>may continue to our poſterity, God
<lb/>will uphold our houſes, reſtore to us,

<lb/>our ſelves, if wee deny God a ſmall of<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>fring, that daily offereth to us many
<lb/>graces, and giveth us all the good
<lb/>things we poſſeſſe. Our ſoules and bo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dies are a ſacrifice due to him: and
<lb/>therefore no Chriſtian may deny to
<lb/>him an offring out of his wordly goods,
<lb/>if Gods ſervice require it.</p>
                     <p>As for thoſe that draw backe in this
<lb/>ſervice, and refuſe to concurre in pro<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>moting Gods honour, let them marke
<lb/>the words of our Saviour, <hi rendition="simple:italic">Matth.</hi> 12.
<lb/><hi rendition="simple:italic">He that is not with me is againſt me</hi>. And
<lb/>the curſe of the Angell upon the people
<lb/>of <hi rendition="simple:italic">Meros, Iudg.</hi> 5. <hi rendition="simple:italic">Curſe ye Meros</hi>, ſaith
<lb/>the Angell, <hi rendition="simple:italic">for they came not up to helpe
<lb/>the Lord</hi>.
                     </p>
                     <p>But we hope we ſhall not need ma<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ny words to move them, that already
<lb/>are ſo well perſwaded, nor to perſwade
<lb/>men, that in Religion and devotion are
<lb/>ſo forward. It is the duty of good
<lb/>Chriſtians to advance Gods honour,
<lb/>and repreſſe Superſtition, Hereſie, I<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dolatry, Blaſphemy. It is the office of
<lb/>good ſubjects to defend the honour of
<lb/>the State, againſt the ſycophancies of
<lb/>Engliſh Fugitives, and the ſecret pra<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ctices of forraine enemies their adhe<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>rents. The adverſaries uſing all their
<lb/>skill, and joyning their forces againſt
<lb/>Religion and the State, it behoveth us
<lb/>likewiſe to unite our forces, and to
<lb/>joyne in conſultation how to reſiſt
<lb/>them. This common buſineſſe requi<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>reth common helpe, the practices
<lb/>of the Adverſaries provoke us to uſe
<lb/>ſpeed, the quality of the worke being
<lb/>for defence of Religion and the State,
<lb/>will move any whoſe heart is not har<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>dened, cheerefully to give. Whoſo<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ever ſhall willingly give, ſhall receive
<lb/>of God a full reward in this life, and

                     <p>Wherefore recommending the <ref target="#POOL1">Col<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>ledge of <hi rendition="simple:italic">Chelſey</hi></ref> to every religious
<lb/>Chriſtians devout thoughts, we ceaſe
<lb/>further to preſſe them. Only for ſatiſ<lb type="hyphenInWord"/>faction of thoſe that deſire to know
<lb/>why this Colledge is erected at <ref target="#POOL1" rendition="simple:italic">Chelſey</ref>,
<lb/>and not in one of the Vniverſities, this

                  VIII</name> seceded from Rome and declared himself "Supreme Head of the
                    <name type="org" ref="#CHUR8">Church of England</name>" by the Act
              of Supremacy. <name ref="PERS1.xml#MARY2">Queen Mary I</name> repealed this act in <date notBefore="1555-01-11" notAfter="1556-04-03" calendar="#julianSic">1555</date>. In <date notBefore="1559-01-11" notAfter="1560-04-03" calendar="#julianSic">1559</date>, as part of what is now known as the
              Elizabethan Religious Settlement, parliament restored the act and made <name ref="PERS1.xml#ELIZ1">Queen Elizabeth I</name>
              "Supreme Governor of the <name type="org" ref="#CHUR8">Church of
                England</name>", a role still held by the British monarch today. The
              <name type="org" ref="#CHUR8">Church of England</name> has been the official
              Christian church in <ref target="ENGL2.xml">England</ref> since <date notBefore="1559-01-11" notAfter="1560-04-03" calendar="#julianSic">1559</date>. Its doctrinal position was set out in the "Thirty-Nine

                    predecessor at the University of Windsor between <date notBefore="1999" notAfter="2003">1999 and 2003</date>. When we redeveloped MoEML for the
