<p>Despite its notoriously bloody character, the <ref target="SMIT1.xml">Smithfield</ref> area is also bound up with a rich religious tradition. Approached by <name ref="#BART13">St. Bartholomew the Apostle</name> in a dream, he was instructed to build a church in the saint’s name in the suburbs of <ref target="#LOND5">London</ref> (<ref target="#THOR28" type="bibl">Thornbury</ref>). After a series of miracles occurred at the priory, <name ref="#HENR3">Henry I</name> established a charter for the church and granted permission for a three day fair to be held annually, beginning on the feast day of St. Bartholomew (<ref target="#THOR28" type="bibl">Thornbury</ref>). The fair became a staple of <ref target="#LOND5">London</ref> summer activities and thrived until 1855 when it was suppressed due to the abundance of illicit activities being conducted on the fair grounds. According to Henry Morely, there were most likely two fairs—one in <ref target="SMIT1.xml">Smithfield</ref> and one just inside the gates of the priory (<ref target="#THOR28" type="bibl">Thornbury</ref>). Due to the cloth fair’s popularity, it very quickly began to attract a variety of vendors, showmen, and entertainers. At the fair, a visitor could find puppet shows, wrestling matches, and bull and bear baiting (<ref target="#BART23" type="bibl"><title level="a">Bartholomew Fair and Smithfield</title></ref>).</p>

<p>Perhaps the best know literary treatment of <ref target="SMIT1.xml">Smithfield</ref> appears is in <name ref="#JONS1">Ben Jonson</name>’s eponymous comedy <title level="m">Bartholomew Fayre</title>. It was first performed by the <name ref="#LAEL1" type="org">Lady Elizabeth’s Men</name> on <date calendar="#julianSic" when="1614-11-10">31 October 1614</date> at the <ref target="#HOPE2">Hope Theatre</ref>, and presented to the court at <ref target="#WHIT5">Whitehall Palace</ref> the following day (<ref type="bibl" target="#CAMP15">Campbell</ref>). The play chronicles Londoners from all walks of life as they attempt to navigate the fair and its raucous and unruly world. Largely episodic in structure, the play lacks any discernible plot or obvious protagonist. Rather, the comedy’s humor depends upon the vividly drawn setting and evocation of the unique experience of living in Jacobean <ref target="#LOND5">London</ref>. Fran C. Chalfant points to references in <name ref="#JONS1">Jonson</name>’s work to <ref target="SMIT1.xml">Smithfield</ref>’s layered history.
