                        in early modern <ref target="mol:LOND5">London</ref>, running east-west from the ditch around the <ref target="mol:TOWE5">Tower of London</ref> in the east to <ref target="mol:STAN3">St. Andrew’s Hill</ref> and <ref target="mol:PUDD2">Puddle Wharf</ref> in the west, almost the
                        complete span of the city within the walls.</p></abstract>

                    <ref target="mol:THAM1">Thames Street</ref> was the longest street
                        in early modern London, running east-west from the ditch around the <ref target="mol:TOWE5">Tower of London</ref> in the east to <ref target="mol:STAN3">St. Andrew’s Hill</ref> and <ref target="mol:PUDD2">Puddle Wharf</ref> in the west, almost the
                        complete span of the city within the walls. It passed through seven wards:
                            <ref target="mol:TOWE4">Tower Street Ward</ref>, <ref target="mol:BILL2">Billingsgate Ward</ref>, <ref target="mol:BRID3">Bridge (within) Ward</ref>, <ref target="mol:DOWN1">Downgate Ward</ref>, <ref target="mol:VINT2">Vintry Ward</ref>, <ref target="mol:QUEE3">Queenhithe Ward</ref>, and <ref target="mol:CAST2">Castle Baynard Ward</ref>.</p>
                <p>Archaeological finds suggest that it followed an old Roman road beside the
                        river, from which it takes its name. The street today, twenty-five feet
                        above the level of the Roman road (<ref type="bibl" target="mol:HARB1">Harben</ref>), is divided into <ref target="mol:THAM1">Lower Thames Street</ref> (the section east of Southwark
                        Bridge) and <ref target="mol:THAM1">Upper Thames Street</ref> (the
                        section west of Southwark Bridge). </p>
