                <p><ref target="mol:SUFF3">Suffolk House</ref> was located on the west side of <ref target="mol:BLAC22">Blackman Street</ref> near <ref target="mol:STGE4">St. George Southwark</ref> and was just south of the area depicted on the Agas map (<ref type="bibl" target="mol:WALF3">Walford</ref>). <name ref="mol:STOW6">Stow</name> claims that <ref target="mol:SUFF3">Suffolk House</ref> was built by the Duke of Suffolk, <name ref="mol:BRAN7">Charles Brandon</name>, during the <date calendar="mol:regnal" datingMethod="mol:regnal" when-custom="r_HENR1">reign of <name ref="mol:HENR1">Henry VIII</name></date> (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="mol:stow_1633_BRID4#stow_1633_BRID4_sig_2Q5v">Stow 1633, sig. 2Q5v</ref>), while Ida Darlington asserts that a residence owned by the Brandon family, known as <ref target="mol:SUFF3">Southwark Place</ref>, existed at this location prior to <date calendar="mol:regnal" datingMethod="mol:regnal" when-custom="r_HENR1"><name ref="mol:HENR1">Henry VIII</name>’s reign</date> (<ref type="bibl" target="mol:SURV25">Darlington</ref>).</p>

                <p>In <date when-custom="1536" datingMethod="mol:julianSic" calendar="mol:julianSic">1536</date>, <ref target="mol:SUFF3">Suffolk House</ref> became the property of <name ref="mol:HENR1">Henry VIII</name>. Thereafter, the property was occasionally used as a royal residence. In <date when-custom="1545" calendar="mol:julianSic" datingMethod="mol:julianSic">1545</date>, a Royal Mint was established in the building, but it was closed in <date datingMethod="mol:julianSic" calendar="mol:julianSic" when-custom="1551">1551</date> after the discovery of fraud. According to <name ref="mol:STOW6">Stow</name>, <name ref="mol:MARY2">Mary I</name> granted <ref target="mol:SUFF3">Suffolk House</ref> to the Archbishop of York <name ref="mol:HEAT2">Nicholas Heath</name>, who sold it soon after and purchased the residence that would then be called <ref target="mol:YORK1">York House</ref> (<ref type="mol:bibl" target="mol:stow_1598_WEST6#stow_1598_WEST6_sig_2B3r">Stow 1598, sig. 2B3r</ref>). The property continued to be known as <quote><ref target="mol:SUFF3">Suffolk House</ref></quote> and <quote>the Mint</quote> into the nineteenth century, and was eventually divided to make way for road improvements in the area (<ref type="bibl" target="mol:SURV25">Darlington</ref>).
