                    <ref target="mol:EAST2">Eastcheap</ref> (<ref target="mol:EAST2">Eschepe</ref> or <ref target="mol:EAST2">Excheapp</ref>) was the site of a medieval food market. <quote>C[h]eap</quote> is an
                        Anglo-Saxon verb that means <quote>to barter, buy, and sell; to trade, deal,
                        bargain</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="mol:OEDI1"><title level="m">OED</title> cheap, v.1</ref>). <name ref="mol:ALLE6">Hugh Alley</name> sketched Eastcheap Market in <title level="m">A Caveatt for the Citty of London</title> (see <ref target="https://luna.folger.edu/luna/servlet/s/9i1426">Folger Digital Image Collection</ref>).</p>

                <p>The neighbourhood of <ref target="mol:EAST2">Eastcheap</ref> is
                        best known to Shakespeareans as the location of <name ref="mol:QUIC1">Mistress Quickly</name>’s inn, where <name ref="mol:HAL1">Prince Hal</name> drinks with <name ref="mol:FALS1">Falstaff</name>. In <title level="m">1 Henry IV</title>, <name ref="mol:HAL1">Hal</name> tells <name ref="mol:POIN1">Poins</name> that he has been drinking with the drawers and
                        learning their language. His familiarity with the commoners will ensure
                        their loyalty: <quote>When I am King of England I shall command all the good lads
                        in <ref target="mol:EAST2">Eastcheap</ref></quote>, <name ref="mol:HAL1">Hal</name> predicts (2.5.12–13).</p>
