Project Manager, 2022-present. Research Assistant, 2020-2022. Molly Rothwell was an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, with a double major in English and History. During her time at MoEML, Molly primarily worked on encoding and transcribing the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey, adding toponyms to MoEML’s Gazetteer, researching England’s early-modern court system, and standardizing MoEML’s Mapography.

 Jamie Zabel Jamie Zabel JZ

Research Assistant, 2020-2021. Managing Encoder, 2020-2021. Jamie Zabel was an MA student at the University of Victoria in the Department of English. She completed her BA in English at the University of British Columbia in 2017. She published a paper in University College London’s graduate publication Moveable Type (2020) and presented at the University of Victoria’s 2021 Digital Humanities Summer Institute. During her time at MoEML, she made significant contributions to the 1598 and 1633 editions of Stow’s Survey as proofreader, editor, and encoder, coordinated the encoding of the 1633 edition, and researched and authored a number of encyclopedia articles and geo-coordinates to supplement both editions. She also played a key role in managing the correction process of MoEML’s Gazetteer.

Janelle Jenstad is Associate Professor of English at the University of Victoria, Director of The Map of Early Modern London, and PI of Linked Early Modern Drama Online. She has taught at Queen’s University, the Summer Academy at the Stratford Festival, the University of Windsor, and the University of Victoria. With Jennifer Roberts-Smith and Mark Kaethler, she co-edited Shakespeare’s Language in Digital Media (Routledge). She has prepared a documentary edition of John Stow’s A Survey of London (1598 text) for MoEML and is currently editing The Merchant of Venice (with Stephen Wittek) and Heywood’s 2 If You Know Not Me You Know Nobody for DRE. Her articles have appeared in Digital Humanities Quarterly, Renaissance and Reformation,Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Early Modern Literary Studies, Elizabethan Theatre, Shakespeare Bulletin: A Journal of Performance Criticism, and The Silver Society Journal. We’d also like to acknowledge students who contributed to MoEML’s intranet predecessor at the University of Windsor between 1999 and 2003. When we redeveloped MoEML for the Internet in 2006, we were not able to include all of the student projects that had been written for courses in Shakespeare, Renaissance Drama, and/or Writing Hypertext. Nonetheless, these students contributed materially to the conceptual development of the project.

 This semi-diplomatic transcription takes the University of Victoria copy (DA680 S87 1633) of STC 23345 (ESTC S117597) as its control text. Digital surrogates of this copy are available in UVic ContentDM (Collection 25, 993). For convenience, and only because STC 23345 has not yet been transcribed by EEBO-TCP, we began with the XML file of the EEBO-TCP transcription of the post-1640 STC 23345.5/Wing S5773A (TCP A13053), available on GitHub). The names of the EEBO-TCP transcribers are unknown. Paul Schaffner edited the original EEBO-TCP markup in or before 2012. Sebastian Rahtz created the TEI Stylesheets to convert the EEBO-TCP file to TEI-P5 in or before 2012. Martin Holmes downloaded the XML file from the GitHub repository. Joey Takeda and Martin Holmes processed the file programmatically to bring it in line with MoEML’s TEI customization. They added proleptic catchwords (based on the first word on the next page) and converted short s back to long s based on predictable patterns. MoEML Research Assistants at the University of Victoria performed the following additional tasks: transcribed the 1633 text from the UVic copy in those places where the post-1640 text differed; supplied content for the gaps left by the EEBO-TCP transcribers; checked the transcription against digital surrogates of the UVic copy and against the copy itself; corrected the proleptic catchwords where necessary; transcribed the formeworks; added links to digital surrogates; and tagged all people, places, and dates. The text was then checked by Editor Janelle Jenstad.

Encoding has been done using the recommendations for Level 4 of the TEI in Libraries Guidelines. Digital page images are linked to the text file.

 Author A person or organization chiefly responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of a work, usually printed text. This term may also be used when more than one person or body bears such responsibility. MoEML uses the term author to designate a contributor who is wholly or partly responsible for the original content of either a born-digital document, such as an encyclopedia entry, or a primary source document, such as a MoEML Library text. Editor A person or organization who prepares for publication a work not primarily their own, such as by elucidating text, adding introductory or other critical matter, or technically directing an editorial staff. MoEML uses the term editor to designate a person who creates a modern edition of a work based on one of our encoded diplomatic transcriptions of a primary source. We use the term commentator to designate a person who adds editorial or explanatory notes to one of our diplomatic transcriptions. Markup editor A person or organization performing the coding of SGML, HTML, or XML markup of metadata, text, etc. MoEML uses the code mrk both for the primary encoder(s) and for the person who edits the encoding. MoEML’s normal workflow includes a step whereby encoders check each other’s work. We use the term encoder to designate the principal encoder, and markup editor to designate the person who checks the encoding. Publisher A person or organization responsible for publishing, releasing, or issuing a resource. MoEML uses the term publisher in two ways: to indicate the publisher of an early modern book (the publisher might also be the bookseller), and to indicate the publisher of a book, journal, or digital project. Project director A person or organization with primary responsibility for all essential aspects of a project, or that manages a very large project that demands senior level responsibility, or that has overall responsibility for managing projects, or provides overall direction to a project manager. MoEML’s Project Director directs the intellectual and scholarly aspects of the project, consults with the Advisory and Editorial Boards, and ensures the ongoing funding of the project. Proofreader A person who corrects printed matter. MoEML uses the term proofreader to designate a contributor who checks a transcription against an original document, or a person who corrects formatting and typographical errors in a born-digital article. Note that we use the term markup editor to designate a person who proofreads and corrects encoding. Programmer A person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. MoEML uses the term programmer to designate a person or organization responsible for the creation and/or maintenance of computer program design documents, source code, and machine-executable digital files and supporting documentation. Printer A person or organization who prints texts, whether from type or plates. MoEML uses the term printer to designate the person named as the printer on the title page of a primary source text, or the person identified by scholars as the printer (e.g., in the English Short Title Catalogue database). In early modern printing practice, the roles of printer, bookseller, and publisher might coincide in one person, or be performed by different people. CSS editor MoEML uses the term CSS Editor for a person who adds CSS styling to the transcription of a primary source. We use CSS styling to describe the bibliographic features of the texts we transcribe. For further information, see our page on CSS styling. Added standardized renditions to tagsDecl. To the Reader.

THat I may give you a reaſon of ſuch things as the Iudicious and ſevere Cenſurer may deeme blemiſhes and imperfections in this Worke: For the Order, you may be pleaſed to underſtand, it is not ſo abſolutely Methodicall as I could wiſh it were, yet needs none other Apologie, than the length of time it hath beene growing to this Bulke, and Mortality of the Authors, who have ſpent (two of them now) their lives in the diſquiſition of venerable Antiquity concerning this City. The Learned know, Men are all various in their Opinions, as in their Faces you hardly finde of a Nation two that reſemble in all proportions, ſo in their Minds is there as much diſcrepancy, and then muſt there needs be the ſame or more in their Writings, the expreſſe Image of their Minds. And this is the Fate of our preſent Worke, which begun Methodically, hath not beene ſo well proſecuted, whether out of difference in Iudgement, or want of Information, I diſpute not: Probable it may be, the deſire of inſerting all things for the delight of the Reader, might breed this want of Method, and the rather am I induc’d to incline thereto, ſince every dayes Experience teaches, how unſtable oftentimes and incertaine Friendſhip is, when ſhe promiſes Information in this kinde: Yet this, the ingenuity of a courteous Reader will excuſe, ſince the Benefit compenſates the Wrong.

And to adminiſter a ſalve to this ſore, and prevent Diſtraction in the Reader, in this laſt Impreſsion have you variety of Tables, ſuccinct and pithy, yet not obſcure: In the beginning, the whole body of the Book diſſected into ſixtie Chapters, whoſe ſhort Contents epitomize the Subſtance of the Work: Then briefe Schemes as well of all the Churches in and about London and Weſtminſter foure miles compaſſe, as of all the Halls and Companies of this Honourable City, both Alphabetically ranged with reference to their proper places. Laſtly, that nothing might be wanting which ſhould bring eaſe and furtherance to the Studious Reader, have you a Catalogue of Authors, on whoſe authority the truth of our Aſſertions may depend.

Neither leave we you heare: In the end alſo have we furniſhed it with two exact Tables; The firſt an Index, containing in it the chiefe Streets, Lanes, Conduits, ſtately Houſes of Noblemen, Innes of Court, Chancery, and other ancient Monuments of this City, not without the admixion alſo of worthy Actions and Cuſtomes of Citizens. The other a Concordance of thoſe, whoſe Honour in their Office, Charity in their Almes, Memory in their Monu ment, hath acquainted Poſterity with their Names: By this Guide, hee who boaſts his Birth in a Magnificent City (as the Ancient did in Rome or Athens) may with great facility finde his Anceſtors in their Honours, Almeſ giving, Tombes, or other memorable and worthy Actions here recorded: For inſtance (not to exceed our Memories) finde the name of Anderſon in the Concordance, and according to the firſt figures (105. a. ¶) turne to the Page, and you have his Liberality or Benefaction to Brazen-noſe College in Oxford; then conſult the ſecond (291. a. ¶) in like manner, and you have his Monument in Saint Olave Vpwel’s Church: ſo the third (592. b. ¶.) and you ſhall finde him there Sheriffe, Anno Dom. 1601. Thus have we endevored to prevent Diſtraction, and reduce the copious Variety of this Worke to heads, for the Readers eaſe; not without a great deale of Paines, Care, and Charge: The Iudicious can give the beſt eſtimate of the Paines; of the Care none better than he that hath reaped benefit by the reading; as for the Charge, the proportion of the Volume ſpeakes, eſpecially to the skilfull in that Myſtery; to which if you adde the length of time (now almoſt three yeeres) it hath lyen under the Preſſe, there is none but may conceive the greatneſſe thereof.
