                such Traytors or Transgressors, as are deliuered out of the <ref target="TOWE5.xml">Tower</ref>, or otherwise to the Shiriffes of

                <p><ref target="TOWE1.xml">Tower Hill</ref> was a large area of open ground north and
                    west of the <ref target="TOWE5.xml">Tower of London</ref>. In Stow’s time <ref target="TOWE1.xml">Tower Hill</ref> also included land to the east of <ref target="POST1.xml">Posterngate</ref>, now called <ref target="LITT7.xml">Little Tower Hill</ref>. By <date when-custom="1598" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1598</date>, Stow reports that <ref target="TOWE1.xml">Tower Hill</ref> had become <quote>greatly streightned by incrochmentes,
                    (vnlawfully made and suffered) for Gardens and Houses</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>).</p>

                <p><ref target="TOWE1.xml">Tower Hill</ref> is most famous as a place of execution;
                    there was a permanent scaffold and gallows on the hill <quote>for the execution of
                    such Traytors or Transgressors, as are deliuered out of the <ref target="TOWE5.xml">Tower</ref>, or otherwise to the Shiriffes of
                        London</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). The gallows initially caused great
                    controversy. Set up in <date when-custom="1464" datingMethod="includes.xml#julianSic">1464</date> by officers of <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA6">King Edward
                        IV</name>, there was discussion about whether the gallows fell within the
                    jurisdiction of the City of London or were part of a liberty. <name ref="PERS1.xml#EDWA6">King Edward</name> sent out a royal proclamation stating
                    that the gallows were set up for his use without his consent and were <quote>in
                    derogation and preiudice of the liberties and franchises of this cittie</quote> (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#STOW15">Stow</ref>). He made sure it was known that this
                    disregard for jurisdictions was not characteristic of his relationship with the
                    City of London. The gallows were finally removed in the mid-eighteenth century
                    after many years of use (<ref type="bibl" target="BIBL1.xml#HARB1">Harben</ref>).</p>

                <p><ref target="TOWE1.xml">Tower Hill</ref> is labelled <quote><ref target="TOWE1.xml">Towre hyll</ref></quote>on the Agas map northwest of
                    the <ref target="TOWE5.xml">Tower of London</ref> and features an illustration of the gallows
                    in the northwest corner.</p>
